Hot Shotting With A 20 Year Old Truck- Yay or Nay??

Had a 500 mile run to make unexpectedly, so I hooked up the ol 7.3 power stoke to make it happen. Alot of guys ask about using an old truck for hot shotting, so I tried to make a video about how that would work out. Keep in mind my normal loads scale over 35-40,000lbs and this load we were only at 28k. It's asking alot of your truck to run commercially. But it's asking even more if your truck was not designed and rated for the work your doing. This truck does well for short term, but I wouldn't be excited to go back OTR with it. Enjoy
Long live the legendary 7.3

I started hot shotting in a pos 6.0 that wasn't tuned or manipulated. That damn thing left me setting on the side of the road more than I ever want to talk about.My 01 7.3 has tuner,exhaust and gauges, airbags nothing else. Just turned 335,000 miles pulling a Deere 60G thru the Virginia mountains. She's no powerhouse or cadillac just my dependable money maker that's never once left me stranded.

Just curious, why does everyone say 7.3s lose speed when towing and going uphill? I've owned 2 of them, a '99 and '02 and towed with both. I've always been impressed with how perfectly they maintain speed and power, even while in cruise control. Am I missing something, or have I just been lucky?

Great video. But for guys that want to run a 7.3 and HS just go F450. You get the heavier capacity and bigger brakes plus 4.10,4.56, or 4.88 gearing with a much larger rear axle.
@snoopytheace4487
@snoopytheace4487 3 года назад
Ya the bigger brakes are essential for heavy towing. Unfortunately it's hard to get an obs f450 aka f-superduty that is a cclb dually. But axles and suspension can be swapped out.

@@snoopytheace4487 oh ok that cool to know my dad just got a 2002 f450 with the 7.3 6 speed straight shift actually got it today has around 210k miles he got it for 7500$ pretty good deal it's his first diesel truck we do have a 1990 Ford L7000 single axl dump truck it's sssllooowww as heck lol tops out at 55 but it's reliable we have been using it to pull our 20k lbs backco on a 10k lbs trailer. We're now going to use that truck to pull it because it will probably go over 45/50 pulling 30k. lbs
@snoopytheace4487
@snoopytheace4487 2 года назад
@@nano-gq9tv ya. The superduty f450 is a good truck. The obs aka 1992-1997 never had an actual f450 it was always called the f-superduty. But in 1999 they added the f450 and f550. And a few tips on that engine upgrade the intake box and filter. The stock ones were always too restrictive. I'd also straight pipe it with the 4 inch down pipe and 4 inch back. It lets the engine breathe. On the turbo there is an EBPV Exhaust Back Pressure Valve that should be deleted. It was designed to help worm the engine up faster but does cause some restrictions and tends to leak oil, unless you are in an area that is really cold it's not really needed. Some people convert it to an exhaust brake. There is also a tube on the front called the exhaust back pressure sensor tube. Every once and a while you should clean it out or replace it. It will help with fuel mileage and power. I also put archoil friction modifier with every or every other oil change. It was designed for the 7.3 and 6.0 and its awesome stuff. It can also be used for other engines. Even Jay Leno recommends it. Also do the CCV mod. You can find it on riffraffdiesel.com. that website will be your main go to site for the engine. They are the best. But with the stock ccv it is sending oil back into the intake before the turbo and will clock up the intercooler and intake valves. Try to avoid shutting it down after running it hard. One its really hot and once off coolant stops flowing. Also the turbo will be spinning faster and once off it will not be getting oil anymore and could damage the bearings. I know this is a long list but this is stuff from my own experience.

When I started back in 2015, I had a 1997 f-350 with a 7.3. Loved it, it pulled nicely. I did have a issure with the high pressure fuel lines in the top of the engine, but after replacing them, no problems. Saddest day I had was trading it off for a car when I stopped. I'm back doing a heavy hotshot with a 1995 International 8100 with a M-11 cummins in it.. It's a single axle medium duty truck, and I sometimes pull a 45' flatbed with it. Mostly I do power only loads. If you put the work into your engine and maintenance, you can save a lot of cash.

Truck sounds great. The money those old 7.3s still command is insane, but don't knock a 6.0. I have one with almost 500,000. Runs like a top. 4" straight through exhaust off the turbo and S&B CAI with and EGR delete is all the truck had done to it. 6.4s are garbage though.

The 6.4 isn't a bad engine. When deleted I've seen them at 400k and up on the original engine. The problem is most owners are 25 year old dbags named kyle who put 600 ho and drive it like a race car and are surprised that it broke. If PROPERLY maintained they will last. First diesel I was introduced to was my dads 1994 Ford F-250 with the IDI 7.3 Turbo. You don’t know underpowered until you drive one of those. We pulled a load that we had to keep shifting from 1st to 2nd and back to 1st gear on the automatic transmission. It was horrible. Back then everyone bought the 460 gas motors for power. My uncle owned a 89 Ford F-350 with a 6.9 IDI with the 5 speed and on a long hill it came down to 1st gear and was loosing power. It was 2wd so he didn’t even have 4low. Not what you want to do when running HS. One of the reasons the 7.3PS was so tough is because it’s conservatively tuned from ford. When your combination weight is between 24,000-36,000lbs (depending on truck/trailer) your already working that engine/transmission hard. The more power you have the more strain and wear your putting on the drivetrain. Keep in mind your not making money if the wheels are not turning and you insurance payments is due regardless if you put 1 mile on the truck or 10,000. If you really want a 7.3 to work better it’s all in the gearing. A ZF6 with 4.30 gears is a very powerful combination for towing big loads

The largest tractor weighs about 4500 pounds and lightest one about 2,000 pounds so since I will only haul one at a time Max weight would be 4600+4500 = 9100. Is this a good combo for occasional towing for my own personal use. Longest trip is about 300 miles.

I run 99 F350's for hot shot...dually with 4:10 rear, aluminum flatbed, 4" turbo back exhaust, tow safe tune adds about 60 HP and the 6.0 transmission cooler. 4R100 transmission does fine since I run non-CDL. The truck shouldn't be hauling over 26K anyway although I accidently ran over 31K once. Your cost to keep an older one running is cheaper than buying a truck with a payment and higher insurance. Look at my channel for a video of me installing the 6.0 upgrade to my latest 99 F350. The main reason I went with the 6.0 cooler is when driving around the Atlanta area with all the stop and go traffic heats up the transmission.

So do weigh stations not care about the GCWR that the manufactorer has? Thinking about doing hotshot in my LMM
@2020HotShotTruckingLLC
@2020HotShotTruckingLLC 3 года назад
@@nuhnuh61 Most of my loads are less than that, but they don't seem to check it. I've posed that question many times to other drivers and the responses always come back that they don't check. The main things they check are if your weight or combined GVWR is over 26K (then you need a CDL, and they DO check for that) and the tire ratings as fly by night hot shots go cheap on their tires. You are going to want H rated trailer tires. My Big Tex trailer came with G rated GoodRide (AKA "BlowRide") tires rated at 3520 Lbs. Most G rated tires are less than 3500 and are not sufficient for 7K axles. Obvoiusly they overrated the tires so they could sell a ton of trash to Big Tex! They all started separating around 35,000 miles with more than half the usable tread remaining.

Im thinking of starting with a decent manual f550 7.3 for shits and grins. and still, exactly what you said is what i expect. weekly repairs. But id add build/prep preventataive style before towing. guages/filters/trans cooler. Just not sure how to get started.

The 7.3 fanboys need to realize that these engines made the same amount of power as the 460 gasser counterpart and that though reliable the 7.3 isn't a power house, its just a simple low power engine, if you want to maintain some sort of speed or want to be comfortable the newer diesels are heaps better
