HOTTEST CURRY EVER? Two Guys Attempt Phaal Curry Challenge at Brick Lane Curry | Localish 

On my visit to NY in 2019, I made the unholy mistake of trying this curry and ended up in the emergency room 7 hours later for what they called, "extreme intestinal distress." It was the absolute worst food experience of my life. And no I didn't finish the curry.

I tried this once several years ago. My biggest mistake was eating it too slowly, and gave up after eating about 2/3 of it. I was able to deal with the spice, but it became painful when it settled into my stomach.

I’ve had phaal, I thought it was the spiciest curry on the menu but I researched and turned out it was the hottest in the world. I thought I was going to die after 1 piece of chicken and I couldn’t finish it.

Just tried this curry for lunch the other day in New York and I only made it half-way through the dish before I had to stop myself. In the first couple bites, you basically feel the spiciness begin to coat your overall mouth, then your throat starts to really feel the accumulated burn, and eventually you really start feeling it burn in your stomach. The taste is unique because of the ghost peppers; I'd recommend anyone who's interested in giving it a try but obviously don't hurt yourself doing it. I had two mango lassis and a whole bunch of water and basically felt full from it for the rest of the day (really just my stomach recovering).

Had a phaal in Norwich,UK. I can eat a vindaloo no worries but this was a different league. Just as hot coming out as it was going in. The waiter laughed when we ordered it.

I just ate a Phaal. My friend is friends with the owner and they make it even spicier for him, so I got what he gets. It was incredibly spicy, and incredibly tasty, and I'm feeling my stomach trying to deal with it as I type. They warned me against it, but I didn't even break a sweat. Well, maybe a bead. Pretty fly for a white guy.

had one last night, i had to leave it to go cold so i could finish it. the burn was bad but the stomach cramps and going to the toilet..wow.

I've had phaal a few times before. So delicious. I'd love to do the restaurant challenges myself.

Haha, remember a night out after having more than “a few” in Banbury and me and mates decided to order the off the menu Phaal. Some chicken curried out, whilst some of us decided to go for it. I remember eating a few mouthfuls, initially no pain or sweats, then after that, I felt like it was 100oc in peak winter 🥵 hot stuff, but then our friend who throughout informed us his Dad was in the SAS, so naturally he was hard as nails decided to took in...and he did the whole thing non stop, we then proceeded to continue said night out with plenty more booze to follow 😆 Next day, we bumped into the friend in town and asked how he felt, he said he felt just fine, but his bum didn’t 🤣 Phaal adventures, recommended 👌

The trick is to eat the Curry with Naan (Bread), Salad and Curd Raita. These two guys did not even touch anything else and took two spoon full of curry.

When I visited NYC in 2018 I tried to persuade some friends to come and try this challenge, they said no. Shame I have had Phaals in the UK, and wanted to try this version.

What is with the colours here? The phaal oscillates between being a deep red and a brownish orange between cuts. Am I going crazy?

I am from Russia and after I ate a kebab from some kiosk with hot sauce, my stomach hurt a lot for several days. Now I have an aversion to all spicy dishes.I sincerely do not understand those people who eat phaal curry are strange. I apologize for possible mistakes, I am writing through a translator :) . I've had many phaals but not from new york I will try this when I visit in December. The thing is everyone's recipe is different I got used to eating the phaal but can't wait to try this in new york

Years ago, I worked for Cardiff University. At Christmas, on the last work day we would have a few beers & a take out in the tea room but one of us had to stay sober to go get the food. This year was my turn... I took orders, one of which was from a rather silly technician who wanted a faal. I emptied the swear box & the fart jar. At the curry house I placed the order, with the faal... the guy behind the counter stopped, looked over his glasses & said "are you sure? That is REALLY hot". I replied "Yep, the guy says he eats it all the time" The chef came out & asked who wanted the faal so I sold him as well. Back at tge tea room, the entertainment started... Eric's face went red, his eyes streamed, snot dribbled down his chin & he sweated profusely... to this day he swears I did something to the curry, but I didn't have to. It was a sight to behold!

Went here with my Punjabi friend. We ordered 7 dishes, one of them was the chicken Phaal. It came a deep bloody red color and looked promising but was only about 7 on the heat scale. I wish I was kidding, we were so disappointed. My friend kept holding it up to the servers pointing at it and asking in their language if this was the Phaal that is the spiciest, and they said yes. We literally ate it while taking bites of whole green chilies that my friend has requested at the beginning of our meal. We have high spice tolerances but this was very disappointing! We wanted 911 level pain and agony, to be pleading with god. To put in perspective, all we drank the entire evening was a bottle of Evian that we shared. I will be going back for sure because I’m hoping this was a fluke/maybe they didn’t have all the ingredients, also everything else that I ate was incredible. Really good daal makhani, naan and green chutney

It always tastes best if you eat it like us Brits...on a weekend Ruby night take out after a few too many bevies. With a vindaloo chaser for breakfast.

I came here after dorothy thoughthey finished it with a lit of struggles but dorothy ate it lightly though she cant finish as it was large amount for her❤

I completed it today spiciest thing I have ever had makes you sweat and have very bad stomach cramps I got threw it tho but the worst part is after you finish it it’s been about 10 hours after and I’m still feeling the effects 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

Many years ago there was a curry house in Manchester called Charlie’s, phall was the third hottest curry they sold, above that were the Suicide & topping the podium was the Crematia. If you finished the Crematia it was free & you got a T-shirt saying so & your’ photo on the hall of fame (pain). I knew I couldn’t eat one, so just settled for a vindaloo, but I asked the owner how many T-shirts he’d given away that year (it was July at the time) & he said 8, apparently not even the skinheads who’d been sniffing glue could handle it. My mate who’s an industrial chemist just looked at one and laughed saying that it was probably a chemical weapon.

Ate phaal 1 time. My FIRST time going to an Indian restaurant and wanted something spicy. Chef came out and asked "are you sure?", of course, how bad can it be? It may have been so spicy I couldn't finish it in one sitting, but it is also so good I couldn't let it go to waste and ate the leftovers.

Love it. Wish I could try it. I have tried the 3 hottest chillies in the world, and have tried phall non have been too hot so far. The hottest chillies are crazy, trinidad scorpion and carolina reaper. One builds up slowly and doesn't stop for an age, the other hits like a left hook in the mouth but fades quickly(but can't remember which way round between the two).

Sweet chilli peanuts leave me gasping in agony. That Phall curry would do me in.

It's spicy, no doubt. Also, curry in Nagaland, Kolhapuri, Manipur, Assamese, and Andhra style is very spicy like this. In Nagaland, they make frequent use of the Naga Jolokia pepper. Very hot. Probably thousands of times hotter than a habanero. And they don't eat these pepper for stunts. It's just their diet.

How hot is a phaal compared to a vindaloo? I had a 2nd portion in the fridge for a couple of days and the 2nd one kicked my ass; not sure where the logic is there but I would say it felt definitely twice as hot. Still don’t think that puts it in phaal territory though. I’d love to try one. Amazingly I live in Birmingham where the dish originated yet it’s hard to actually find one anywhere

The best advice "When you start don't stop" chilli hits when you don't eat. Hiccups start when the food pipe goes dry.

I still order a phaal every now and then when I'm craving spice. And I always, always regret it the following day when my stomach and arse are in severe non stop agony and I'm in the fetal position for 12+ hours swearing that I've done permanent damage to myself 😂

Remember when eating a hot phaal challenge. Tell the chef to actually make it hot this time.

Phaal Curry taught me how to walk like John Wayne, I am sure the glaze in the toilet pan came away, so hot in and on the way out you learn to cry like a man, the problem is it can be addictive.

I had a colleague come over from nebraska to to lecture in my delartment..he commented that the UKs food is bland, we treid explaning that the UK has a strong curry tradition and some anglo indian currys are extreemly hot....he didnt believe us so when he was leaving we took him to the curry mile in manchester and ordered him a Phall....it was funny, he went purple and managed to say why before giving up. Aparently now when a huest lecturer is coming from nebraska as a guest lecturer, researcher or PhD candidate they are told dont let the psychology facilty take you for a curry

I get a chicken tikka phaal from my local indians almost every weekend. Infact im waiting on a knock on the door right now. Can't wait for the burn!

Its a 'maaaan thang'...pure bravado, it cannot be enjoyable... especially the next day! Chicken Madras, or Ceylon for me, unless I have a heavy cold or flu, then I have a vindaloo...which works a treat.

I love curries but i ate the carolina reaper chillies out the bag with a friend and we were both fucked. It does things to your body that are wrong. You dont expect it and you will literally be dribbling all over the place if u eat them from the bag

I got nervous when I ordered it and then saw everyone regretted but its fine. Definitely at the threshold of almost too spicy but I’m asian so I guess its just regular extra spicy to us

my mate once said just order me a nice curry, i went into the local one and asked them to make the hottest curry theyd ever done...haha we all watched as the lazy sod ate it not to save face...like volcanic lava ...haha

I have done a few Phalls lots of chilli massalas and thousands of vindaloo’s , my problem isn’t eating it but the problem is the next morning , a man shouldn’t have volcanic contractions 😢or an arse like a blood orange ! So I am retired from that and have a biryani 😂
