House of no walls by former Berlin wall has dream kitchen on top

When Helle Schröder and Martin Janekovic (XTH-Berlin) signed a 199-year lease on some land along the old Berlin Wall, they had a permit to build a row house, but despite the two shared walls, they wanted something that felt airy and light-filled.
Solid glass and steel girders helped them avoid solid walls on the front and back of the home while inside they relied on drawbridges, slides and netting to keep floors and ceilings to a minimum.
The bedrooms are housed within two concrete elements, but even here one entire wall is a drawbridge that opens easily with hydraulics to allow light and air to flow smoothly. The top floor is a kitchen dining area lit from a huge skylight.
A heat pump (pipes going 80 meters into the ground) heats the home and collected rainwater flushes the toilets.

However, they built their house for their specific needs, it is practical for them. However, I don’t think such a house would be practical for anyone else, and if they ever want to sell the house, finding a buyer will be an immense challenge. I personally enjoyed this house. I think it's great design for the site and functionality. Look how much fun the kids had. A conventional build would feel dark and claustrophobic. Boring , too. This feels light, airy, natural and functional. The wood and view of greenery make it very inviting. Bedroom and bathroom doors still allow noise transmission in most houses. And bathroom and kitchen smells linger in closed rooms the longest. A trashcan with a lid reeks. An open trashcan doesn't. Kudos to architect and Kirsten.

It is a place where there was a wall. People had hard life , it has a history. This is not a happy ending story. People suffered in this place, and after as well . Did you notice it?. The feeling the building is giving is exactly What it should give. I don't know if she was the Architect or It was someone else but It seems like it is what they/she wanted to convey through the way it is constructed. Materials, slanted Concert walls, Feeling of vertical Tunnels, grey giving call back to the history at the same time managing to design it livable. It is not a place where you need to feel full of joy Looking from one side of past Wall looking at another side with finished and Fully Furnished and colorful Indoors as frank lloyd wright and other Architect did. I think it is a Pensive Architecture. At my second thought, There should not be any building there at all, where a rich family lives. This place has a lots of History. It should be something else and I didn't find the Person Sympathetic as well.

@J H well I guess, this family living there like these kind of Asthetieks. And because it is Modular at least in the sense that if somehow in future you don't like it anymore, you can design in the way you want, with least expenses. It is like a clean canvas.

@FalscheRolex
@FalscheRolex 6 лет назад
this is in germany... not america. they know how to calculate and btw. the angle is exactly 45 degrees.
@nesekaba
@nesekaba 6 лет назад
It was 35 degrees. ☺. Also, just to give you more context. In the US at least, architects and structural engineers would design these structures, do all the calculations. Then often you would bid it out to a general contractor (who builds it.) They are given the plans to the structure and they have estimators who calculate all the needed materials and work for construction. This would be difficult with a structure as shown above. When they are bidding for a project, they also have to be competitive with their pricing and often have to estimate in a very short time period to submit their bid. So that's where Dav Snow's comment comes in. It would have been very difficult to accurately estimate, therefore making it difficult to bid for, win the bid, and make a profit off of it. You may already know this process, but I wanted to share just in case you didn't, and for anyone else reading the comments. ☺
@eberbacher007

This house, built on the site of the Berlin wall, represents the opposite: no walls. This house is telling that no walls are better than walls, as walls divide people, and no walls make people united. It's an amazing concept, and it has a beautiful meaning.

That title took me a minute. You meant 'by' as in 'next to', but I thought the Berlin Wall had become sentient for a second there.

Amazing house - just LOOOOOVE it, I can imagine that any child would love living here - I like how open it is and the sense of lots of space. Many people are worried about smells coming from the kitchen - what the hell kind of food are people cooking that they are worried that the smell would be soooo bad - my house smells DELICIOUS when I cook and everyone who walks in says 'YUMMMMM what's cooking?' German people, in my experience, are very polite, civilised and considerate so their children are very well behaved and respectful and I don't think you'd have to worry too much about loud, screaming, spoiled, self absorbed, obnoxious and rude kids running around the house...
