Edited this at home over the 2018 holidays before adding to the end of the Bikebite video that starts with the bike running and making terrible noises due to the Starter Gear bouncing off the clutch gear and hammering the kicker gear as a result of a worn bushing.
Used in the Bikebite video: • When Something Breaks...
Uploaded this on the personal channel for two reasons - A) Might help someone searching for this issue on their bike who doesn't watch Bikebite and B) So Dwayne can see ASAP what I meant by adding a shoutout for his business in a Bikebite video.

A new bushing will fix it, a lot cheaper and if those are OE gears, it’s worth it. After market hears are a crap shoot, they may last, they may go out in short order. Baker makes a super quality set. They ain’t cheap, (300$) but once done probably last near forever. It sure beats having the gears slip and bust your knee or they slip past and the kicker rotates. I’ve seen it a lot with the China parts. Good explanation for those that have never been in there tho to be sure. If the gears are good, I just buy the Jim’s bushings and they are good for another 40 years or so.

I couldn't source good bushings at the time and the gears in there were cheap. I've heard mixed things about Baker products. Everyone agrees they are expensive but of the people I personally know who purchased them, they only bought one time and since bought cheaper so skipped myself. Maybe I'm wrong. You own Baker gears yourself? You are right about replacing bushings. China parts no good from what I've seen. I see a lot of taiwan parts look and work ok but that could change. Of course buying American preferred, but at a 500% premium Baker asking a lot of our poor wallets.

@@IanLandesman I do own, and use , two sets of the Baker. At the markup you describe , I’d have to pass to tho. Sometimes one can source old stock from Dixie distributing, or other old stock. A lot of the old parts were made in Japan and were of good quality. Also, used OEM pops up from time to time. I always try to keep an eye out so as to have spares of good quality. Anyway, it’s good to see people fixing their own and keeping the older iron rolling.

@@megastick9324 thanks for the info. That really helps me and others. I've heard of those parts for reasonable price but never seen myself when I needed. Makes sense they pop up sometimes.

I borrowed a generic Harbor Freight puller from a friend. If you have a Autozone or such near you, they will usually loan you one for free with a deposit. I'm sure there is a purpose built one that fits better, but I didn't want to wait on a tool in the mail.

@@IanLandesman thank you. The one at harbor freight is to thick to fit. A guy on chopcult forum turned me on to one specific to to this on eBay.

@@jonschauerman9221 the generic one does take some finagling to work. The purpose built ones won't slip. I couldn't wait. Had to get the bike back together to ride. Now I have two bikes and can take my time waiting on parts and fixing right, but still ride while the weather is good.

Hi Ian, i do have a problem with the kick start of a FXSB Low Rider 4 speed, the kick start does not engage as you kick.. any suggestions on what the problem might be..?

Enrique Corona what is the history of the bike? Do you know if it use to work? If it never worked I bet the kicker gear got chewed up and previous owner simply removed it to stop the gear banging against the starter clutch. If this started suddenly and there was no banging noises, I would guess the spring pressing the starter clutch against the mainshaft has broken and is not engaging. You have to take the kicker side plate off to see what the problem is.

Enrique Corona also possible the starter gear is off the mainshaft, but that gear is press on so shouldn’t have come loose.

@@IanLandesman Hey Ian... thanks for ur reply.. yes, the bike was working.. it all started one day that I started the bike, it was warming, opened the gate of my house took the bike out of the house to start going then all of a sudden engine stopped.. thought it was not warm enough.. tried to start it again by kicking and realised that the kick did not engaged...! I have readjusted the clutch thinking that that was the problem but did not solve..! I have taken the kick off for inspection, haven´t take out the spring but i have manipulated it and it seems to be doing it´s job but may have to take it out the really check it more closely.. Have you got a whatsapp number, so i could send you a pair of videos.. hope you can make some comments on that..

Enrique Corona I don’t have whatsapp. You can find me on facebook or ianlandesman@gmail.com. So bike stopped running? When you kick it just swings and doesn’t engage or you mean it is stuck and you can’t kick it through? Maybe your motor is locked up from no oil or something
