It makes you wonder how much the chain drive cams even under tension throws off the valve timing compared to a gear driven unit. I converted my twin-cam to gear and never looked forward.

I've got an evo motor that had sat for about 5 years i need to spin it over by hand like this. My jsp has an easy access bolt to turn for this but I'm not finding anywhere so easy on the evo any ideas?

You have to remove the primary drive cover, and turn the compensator sprocket with a socket of the correct size.

so in theory, if i have a beginners grip thus far, if 1 wanted -for my own curiosity- to reduce the cc, 1 could take reduce the heads, and pistons? this is basicaly formed from not wanting to stick a honda v-twin 250cc in my AMF z90 but wondering if there was a way to cusomize a block to reduce cc , get that harley v twin.

How does the spark plug and fuel injector know when to fire of there's not cam sensor? When changing the cam it doesn't matter which rotation the crank is on when aligning the gears. So how does the ignition know the difference between TDC of the compression stroke and TDC of the exhaust stroke?
@jonr4651
@jonr4651 3 года назад
I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure the ignition fires on both cylinders every time in a Harley motor. Not super sure if that even answers your question actually.

best engine out there. no need to have high rpm unless ur trying to speed more gas money. amazing tq through the rpm range. all steel through the cylinder walls and heads inner layer and a steel crank that'd built to last 100's of years not aluminium shit that wears out in 5 years if ur lucky. 2 valves per cylinder witch is all u need and more parts means more problems so 8 or 16 valves waste of time and parts. 2 pistons size of trash cans not 3, 4 or 6 again more parts that can go bad. harleys keep everything so simple and that's the best part about em. air cooled engines are by far the best and proven time and time again. long stroke vs short stroke again harley wins cuz short stroke high revving engines wear out 10x as fast proven time and time again. plastic cam chain tensioner everyone is complaining about is silly prolly the same people that believes sportsbikes are built better then a harley and ohhhhh there plastic hahah but now plastic sucks on harley hahah but there whole bike is made of it hahah. old technology is the best and that's proven. new shit is advanced but also made to break down as fast as u get it. look at TV's for example back then u bought a tv and it lasted 50-100 years now Japan shit 3-5 years if ur lucky. washer and dryers now 3-5 years furnaces lucky 5 years back then 25-40 years. everything with new tech fucking sucks. look at phones now days last maybe 3 years but old ass land phone lasted 20+ years. fuck new tech I'm young but I'm sticking with the old harley engine. I don't have time to keep repairing new tech sorry. I'm sticking with harley the next 60 years😂😂😂my harleys so far have been the most reliable bikes I have bought. the metrics I've had have been straight asswipe.

James Wise Awesome opinions...and I certainly cant argue with your experiences...but I have never gotten over 40,000 miles on a Harley engine wirhout a major engine repair or two. I cant say the same for my 99' Suzuki Intruder that logged 169,000 repair free miles BEFORE the odometer quit. That was 8 years and probably another 70,000 miles ago, and still no breakdowns. I've been riding a 99' Honda Valkyrie Interstate now for many years, and it too has high miles, no breakdown. I guess I'm just agreeing with you as my handle implies. I believe in the OLDSKOOL stuff also, but the Harley engine just hasn't given me the life and confidence of the Metric engines.

I had a Yamaha 1980 XJ650 and it had run to 138,000 miles when I sold it. All the major work that I had to do was put new rings in at 100,000 miles. Not another thing did I do to this motorcycle. I sold it and bought a Honda 2005 VT750C V twin motorcycle because I like the torque of the V twin motor. It has now done 76,000 miles and looks like it is going to go on for ever. I am 65 and could not even push a Harley around in my shed let alone ride one. I am afraid that they are just real heavy old school slugs made for cruising the highways at 55 MPH.

Go down and see the junkie Harley parts in the engine. You would think harley would change the junkie parts and make an engine the buyers wouldn't need to modify to make it reliable . Compensators, cam bearing, cam chain tensioners , roller crank bearings , over heating issues , auto adjustable primary chain adjuster, oil pump and valves train ticking. I'm sure theres more .

I know multiple people with multiple HD bikes and have had 0 problems besides maintenance with high mileage bikes. 50k+ mileage. I hate overrated things and HD is definitely a little overrated but not by much. I own a 2020 iron 883 but only have 3,500 miles on it but I haven't had a problem.
@goodboyringo9716
@goodboyringo9716 3 года назад
@@Shortley ... That little 883 isn't built the same as a Twin Cam so if you don't own a Twin Cam you can't speak of it. Theres even major oiling problems with the M8 . Keep riding that 883 and you'll be fine.

Lucky that the cam chain tensioners are removed so they don't fragment and blow apart the motor. Harley really gave all their customers who purchased their TC engines the shaft (not out of true crank shaft) and did nothing to make their faulty design correct. For me, HD lost a loyal customer.

It was only an issue on the 88s this is a 103....they changed the design in 2007........so you're no Harley fan... otherwise you'd know that
@eb1941
@eb1941 2 года назад
@@Peter-976 2003 Road King and 2005 Deluxe, both bought new and I still have both. I expect a company to stand by their product and fix their design mistake, especially if their product is considered a premium product. The cam chain tensions should have been fixed 1999.
@eb1941
@eb1941 2 года назад
@@yanceyboyz My comment was that the mechanical chain tensioners were removed. I understand that after 8 model years HD fixed the problem. It should have been fixed in 1999, not 2007 when hydraulic tensioners were released. Just a shame the HD does not stand by their product.
@yanceyboyz
@yanceyboyz 2 года назад
@@eb1941 how could they fix it in 1999 when it was a wear issue that presented itself at all different mileages? Some 88s did 60k on the factory set some did 15k. How could they fix it the same year of release? There was a bearing issue on the 1999 and they resolved it for mid 2000 release models....so they do fix known issues....
