I've heard this story before but it was a Zero pilot who crashed into the torpedo. Something similar happens in the 1944 movie, Wing and a Prayer with Dana Andrews and Don Ameche. Good movie.

It’s kinda sad that the sacarifice was in vain (I say that as an American for some odd reason) but at least who knows how much damage that first torpedo would have done? He could have saved lives if the ship would’ve sunk faster with two impacts.

I have to admit, this was a brave and selfless act to save his shipmates. Do we know if Japan ever awarded him posthumously for this? If not, maybe someone should contact the Japanese government and ask them to award his family?

It’s sad that his sacrifice, though not initially in vain, would become useless thanks to someone’s incompetence

I've heard about this story before this video. And was rather impressed by this pilot's feat of flying. I wonder what would've happened had he learned about his ships ultimate fate.

I like the "Stop eating like your on Guadalcanal" comment. Its true it was hard eating! The US Marines on the island had to eat captured Japanese food stocks after the fleet evacuated following the disastrous battle of Savo Sound. The rice was estimated to be 45% maggots. Yummy! But ya got to eat.

I had heard this story before, except that since it is not a topic that is usually talked about, it was overshadowed by the great battle that happened in the skies, known as the "duck hunt", the pilot had a lot of courage to sacrifice himself for his empire without that he forced it

The CGI and stories you tell are top notch! The best on RU-vid. Your depiction of Taiho is wrong, though. The Taiho had enclosed front and back areas, the first time this was seen on Japanese carriers. It also had an armored flight deck. If that crewmember didn't turn on the fans and ignite the fume vapor, the ship would have shrugged off the torpedo hit and continued on.

6:30 Two Torpedos... Two planes..!! Idk if he had radio contact with the other craft...but with his wingman, he might have assumed they'd fallow suit and claim the final torpedo... Given the Incredibly brief moment he had to make his decision, it doesn't seem too far-fetched a ratiorganization...

The Luftwaffe created a squadron at the end of WWII, Sonderkommando "Elbe" specifically to bring down Allied heavy bombers by ramming them. They only flew one mission, but succeeded in ramming 15 bombers, destroying 8 of them. At least one of the rammed bombers took out another one when it went out of control. Unlike the Japanese, these were not intended to be suicide missions. The pilots were supposed to bail out at the last moment.

There is no greater sacrifice than giving your life for your brother. Truly a story of Valor.

I don't know if you are already aware but these circumstances were depicted in a WWII movie called "A Wing and a Prayer" released in 1944. Only it was a US Carrier and a US fighter pilot who made the sacrifice. A fictional event but perhaps it was inspired by the Japanese incident ? However, I don't know when the US first became aware of the Japanese sacrifice? So it may be just a coincidence PS: It's a pretty entertaining movie that's very loosely based on the Battle of Midway.

Thank you for sharing this awesome story! I don't believe that any other countrymen would of done this. It was a Japanese way of thinking. If there weren't 2 torpedo's on course instead of 1 and if the damage control personal didn't make the crucial mistake I believe that the carrier could of survived the battle thus the story being more well known.

The Japanese military had a completely different ethos to their opponents the allies. They believed their Emperor was a deity, hence they were committing suicide for their god. They believed doing so guaranteed them entrance to the afterlife. BTW, I’ve not seen a Yokosuka D4Y Suisei before. Didn’t know what one was until watching this vlog.👍🏻

What an incredible story. I’m not sure if any axis powers did the same as this heroic Japanese pilot did. For me, if I’d been a US pilot during WWII in the Pacific and my plane was shot up and not able to make it back to base, I’d crash my plane into the enemy’s ship, if I could. There’s a lot more f factors there that would determine if you could or could hit the ship. I thought I remembered a story about a pilot, I don’t recall whose side he was on, he was out of ammo and he pulled up next to the enemy and tipped his wing up to cause the enemy to spin out of control. As far as other countries doing the same as the pilot, the closest I can come to was the Russian army itself. I had seen a Battlefield or Battleline documentary where even the Germans were applauded at the way the Russian officers forced their men to charge under threat of being shot by their own soldiers and take whatever positions that lay before them. That’s pretty bad when the Germans were applauded.

The closest to that deed I can think of is the American torpedo bomber attacks on the Japanese at Midway. The three groups lost 9 of 14, 10 of 12, and 15 of 15. I have always respected their courageous sacrifice. One can do no less for Sakio Komatsu.

You are looking down as you ascend to the sky and see that you may have very well saved your home carrier from destruction only to see Retard 2nd Class Peabrain open a few interior vents to air out the ship and then quite literally air out the ship..

Taiho could have been saved if not for human error.
