How a Revolver Cylinder Stop Works ft. New Colt Python

A brief explanation of how the cylinder stop works in a revolver. It is elegant simplicity. One part with a simple coil spring moves in two different ways depending on the necessary function and the input it receives from the trigger. Its geometry and interaction with the trigger allows it to either pivot or slide linearly.
The example shown here is the 2020 Colt Python, but you’ll find similar mechanisms on S&W or Taurus revolvers.

It’s definitely true when you look at early firearms. They hadn’t yet developed simple ways to do tasks, so they had to resort to complex mechanisms. Simple is difficult to design.

As soon as I get a day off to edit the video there will be another explanation of Python mechanics intended to correspond to the excellent animation by Matt Rittman. You should definitely check his video out if you like this stuff.

More like this! You need a patented plastic pokey like Othias

I do need to find a plastic pokey. Definitely would improve the channel. Sometimes I think people will get tired of revolver videos- but I’m proven wrong every time I release one.

Brother this video was very very helpful and educational on firearms 🤘🎸 the only question I have is are the difficult to replace the cylinder stop? My Buddy has a really nice revolver but the cylinder is spinning freely which is very dangerous!
@ColterBrog
@ColterBrog 3 месяца назад
If it’s a new model Python, probably fairly easy if you can get the part. It seems like all of Colt’s fitting is done at the pawl, and it just tensions against the cylinder stop at full trigger travel. I would speculate that a drop-in replacement is likely. My understanding of S&W revolvers, to the contrary, is that they are fitted so you’d potentially need to be prepared to assess the indexing of the cylinder and make adjustments as necessary. So, in short, they can be replaced but it might take a bit of skilled fitting from someone with experience.

Really clear, very good video. If I understand it correctly, this is true for new Colt revolvers and the Trooper Mk3 series, but the old Python and Detective Special etc worked a different way?
@ColterBrog
@ColterBrog Год назад
The old Python and Detective Special are different. The type you see here is similar in concept to the Trooper Mk3, as well as various S&W and Taurus models.

If I really get on mine. Like a panic fire mode. I get over travel, primer strike right on the left hand side of the primer, no discharge on all six cylinders, slow it go bang every time, run fast like a two stage trigger pull is the only way to run it reliably, single action no issue of course, kinda blows moose testicals.
@ColterBrog
@ColterBrog Год назад
That’s a little odd. II think I might consult with Colt on that if it’s still in warranty.

What if i pull the hammer
@ColterBrog
@ColterBrog 22 дня назад
You mean to use the revolver in single-action? Same thing. Moving the hammer back causes the trigger to also pivot. The cylinder stop functions in the same way.

Particularly that second link should show exactly what you need. It does require a properly fitting screwdriver. The slot is very thin, long, and a bit shallow. Normal screwdrivers will damage the screw.
