Thank you Vlad for a great and informative video. The presentation was top notch in your very distinct and engaging style. I thought I knew my feet but ooops it turns out I do not. They are not normal feet but flat... who would have known😄. I attributed some of differences in fit to the lasts but I apparently figured my feet wrongly. I know better now.

Very instructive, Bro. I learned that my left instep is slightly higher. It makes my oxfords feel funny depending on the brand and last. I agree 100 percent on the tight fit. I walk 10000+ steps a day at work. Loose shoes increase fatigue.

I have narrow flat feet. Many years ago I got measured (9B) and fitted to the 65 last at an Allen Edmonds store by the store manager who knew his business. After a wear or two to break in, the fit and comfort of these shoes are so nice, I forget I am wearing shoes. I am afraid to try another brand without getting an in shore fitting due to all of the differences in last. I hope to someday get to NYC to get fitted at Carmina. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion for some of the finer things in life. Fit is king! Peace to you sir.

Well said and thank you for this nice video. A few years ago I lost some weight. My shoe size went down by half a size. However, my in-step remained the same and I was challenged to find a RTW shoe with a generous instep. 10 years into this struggle I found a few suitable lasts but only at the cost of having bought many ill fitting ones. So the question remains which is costlier going bespoke which costs 4 - 10 times a RTW shoe or accept the cost of trial and error? I am tempted to finally try the former.

I sympathize! I have a very narrow heel and ankle, and almost always have problems with heel slippage. Most RTW lasts claim to be made for "average" feet, and yet it seems those really don't exist. That's why I find it surprising when RTW shoes do fit.There's a learning curve with different lasts as you mention, and sometimes the ones we like are not the ones that fit us. Anyway thanks for the video! Really appreciate you sharing your experience in this realm!

I have normal arches but a high instep. I really dig oxfords but rarely find one that fits length wide and instep wise. Some I cant even get on like Beckett simonon. Carmina I have tried the Detroit last and while comfortable the lacing V is wide. Meermin mark last was a tiny bit better but still a wide V at laces. Got to find one with an even higher instep I think or see how they break in. Lot yo ask in the stretch dept though

@ForTheLoveOfSuits

Hi Vlad. Great video. I think I have normal feet but I’m going to try the shower test to check. I assumed for years I was wearing the right size shoes until I moved to Shanghai and they didn’t have UK shoes sizes so I had to try fitting different sizes and then when I bought shoes online from the UK again I found I was actually a whole size smaller than I believed. Now my shoes fit much better. I didn’t known they were supposed to fit this well. It’s something most people don’t spend too much time thinking about but it’s actually important to make sure you have the right fit. And leaning about which shoe last fits you is great as you can confidently order more shoes and expect a great fit. I bought a pair of Oliver Sweeney shoes a few months ago and they are the best fitting shoes I have ever worn. Unfortunate they just discontinued the last. Damn! The search goes on. Or at least that’s my excuse for looking for more shoes.
@v_r_

Aw man, that's the worst when you find a last that works then they decide to stop making them, that would piss me off. Have you thought about getting a last made just for your feet? I have a video coming up on that soon.

@blobofjam
@blobofjam 3 года назад
I have flat feet but have custom made insoles which fix the issue with shoes. I primarily wear boots, but since getting properly fitted insoles I have not seen any gaping or creases on the side. The one downside is however that it can raise your arch, so thin profile shoes may not fit as well, or will take longer to break in as you have to allow the stitching around the laces to conform to your foot.

One thing I have always been mindful of is what I think is called the heel clip.That is the inward curve at the back of the shoe when viewed from the side. A properly fitting shoe would have a marked heel clip, while an improperly fitting shoe would trace an almost straight heel clip, or more precisely, no inward curve. It is important because if the heel clip is not well defined the bottom of the pants would always get caught in the gap created by an improper heel clip - the gap between the back of the foot and the shoe. It causes the pants to have a semi-break at the rear crease where it meets the shoe. It is an unattractive look. The back of the pants should have a straight uninterrupted fall. The problem is an ill fitting heel clip that is too pronounced comes with its own drawback. Here the shoe may cause blisters at the back of the heel. Oh well, the varieties of men's clothing. It is one of the reasons I have never bought clothing online.
@v_r_
@v_r_ 3 года назад
Thanks for the comment and explanation, maybe I’ve been lucky with that too as I’ve never had an issue with the pants getting caught in that gap. I’ll pay more attention next time.

@omarmahasneh1731
@omarmahasneh1731 Год назад
I have the final answer for you! I had the same problem and after a long investigation and analysis.. figured out the problem!! The problem is that the heel of the VASS shoes is not leveled well with the sole. If you put the shoe on a table and look at the side, you can easily see the the heel front portion is elevated off the table because the heel is inclined forward/upward. When you wear them and apply pressure by your weight and foot on the shoes, the heels level with the floor creating a bending of the middle portion of the sole with the middle down and front and rear tip are up creating an extra length of the sides that can pushes them by outward. I am calling Vass to fix this problem. But the easy fix would be to add a wedge of 3 mm thickness to the frontal part of the heel to make the heel exactly leveled with the whole sole.. and VOILA! The Flat feet emphasizes this problem by creating more pressure in the middle but they are not the reason!

Mr. Riché great video! I was wondering where you buy/sell used shoes. Ebay is a no-go for me to sell shoes because I'm European, and I know about the Shoe Snob marketplace. Are there other places where a budget conscious 18 year old can find good deals on quality shoes? Also, have you considered buying boots? I'm looking at some Carlos Santos Jumper Boots in dark brown at Kostas and I'm intrigued. I hope you have the time to answer me but I know you're a busy business man so I won't be disappointed otherwise. Continue with the great content!

I'm hella flat footed too. I wear vans and sandals 24/7, but I live near the beach in CA. Anyways, magnanni has taken care of me so far. The carmina wholecuts on the rain last are the next cop within a few weeks. Vlad can you make a vid about socks in the future? I find that socks are the only weak link in my outfits

I have this exact problem. The issue is that its not there when the shoes are new. They start to gape after a few months/years of wear when they finally break in and at that point its too late!

Hi Vlad, My biggest pet peeve is when getting any footwear is that I have weirdly thin ankles that cause that bloody Gaping thing for a LOT of shoes I buy! Happened with my Carlos Santos shoes black cap toe oxfords . Had to return em! And got a Forest EEE last black cap toe oxfords! The fit and they slide a slight bit at the back but I’m praying it’s a socks issue. Thank goodness I thought it was only me that had that Gaping problem with shoes! Makes a brother feel so helpless lmao😅😅😅😅😅😳😳😫😫

Hi, what about loafers? How they fit you? Or how they have to fit right? Because of the lack of laces. Sometimes people say, your index finger must fit between heel and heel cup, but in my opinion that ist to loose! What you think?

Flat feet can be remedied by getting measured for an arch that fits into the shoe. It's somewhat expensive and can be uncomfortable into beginning, but for no gaping, this helps.

I just bought a pair of Vass shoes in F last, and while I love how they look, they're just too narrow. I have very wide, flat feet, and I don't really want to return or sell them, but even after getting them stretched for a week by a shoemaker they're still too narrow. My toes are crunched together.

@Vladimir what are some brands that are fit friendly for flat feet?
@v_r_
@v_r_ 19 дней назад
It’s hard to say for sure as I also have a high instep, so that changes things but I’ve been lucky with 90% of the brands I’ve tried. My advice is to try some of the Asian shoe brands as about 20% of Asians have flat feet. But definitely reach out to the brands first, maybe on Instagram to confirm. So brands like Oct. Tenth, Yeossal, Blazing Wonders, Ichigo Ichie, etc.

One thing you have missed is when the vamp is too generous leading to bad creasing and/or the shoe starts to look 'flat' after a few wears. The only pairs of shoes I have is a slightly small pair of pre-Prada Church which are no longer made and a pair of Thursday boots. I have to wear inner soles which I feel somewhat negates the purchase of good shoes. I tried to get a cobbler to insert another layer of inner sole under the ball of the feet on a pair of Loake semi-brogues but he wouldn't do it.
@v_r_
@v_r_ 3 года назад
I think that's usually due to wearing the wrong size as opposed to an issue with the last not matching your feet. Unless I'm wrong.

Love the tie. Where did you get it? I bought a couple ties from EG Cappelli per your recommendation. Any other makers where you can pick such a specific length and width? I have a bunch of ties from Sam Hober who can make any measurement which is nice.
@v_r_
@v_r_ 3 года назад
Thanks, Dylan! Cappelli and Hober are 2 of the few that I know where you can really specify the details without paying an upcharge since almost everything they make is made to order. Brands like Shibumi which I love would charge extra for such a service. The tie that I got on is from Berg & Berg.

Flat footed brother checking in. I don’t have a high instep but I have my own share of weird foot problems, ie really big, big toe compared to the other toes. This always caused me to poke holes in my socks. I thought the gape was normal, I never thought about it or to look at other peoples feet for it. Now I know why... what are your top shoes/lasts for flat feet?

I too have that issue with the top line of my shoes, with some brands. It is a feature that I recognize more and more. I think it makes the shoes feel loose, and look less elegant. I have given away some shoes, for that reason, and they fit better on those I gifted them to. The same goes for the facings. When the space is too big, it makes it look as if you are wearing someone else’s shoes. It makes the shoes look cheap! I do not like more than 1/2-3/4 inches space between the top portion of the facing. Any more and you are really pushing it., and the shoes are clearly too small. Thanks for making this video, it is a topic that is rarely covered with such detail.

one of the worst feeling is when you invest money in a good pair of shoes and you have a gut feeling they don't fit right but you keep telling yourself it's OK etc. this happened to me a couple of times, and sometimes it gets resolved by going a size smaller, but other times the issue is the last like you said.
