As a child, when I first heard about automatic transmissions, I was like "whoa that is so cool! I imagine it's probably just like a normal transmission, but the computer controls actuators to press in the clutch and shift the gears!" I could not have been more wrong. This stuff is fascinating as hell, I never would've thought there's a hydraulic connection between the engine and the transmission like this (and the fact that automatic transmissions just work completely different XD)
Another wonderful video! I always thought automatic transmissions and torque converters were the most remarkable devices in the world, the brainpower that designed and built them makes me shake my head in awe.

The torque converter in a rebuilt Camry transmission went out after just 3 weeks. It sounded like marbles in a can when idling. The shop replaced it free. 4 years later, no problems.
You made another video on torque converters a few years ago right? I remember that one being pretty much the best one I had ever seen, and this one is even better

Great video as always...I've been experiencing the classic delayed/no shift issues on my 93' es300. Even after extensive research and changing the TCL and shift solenoids AND upgrading the boost valve on the valve body, it made no difference to improve the shift quality. I'm stumped...I'm wondering if it's the torque converter, speed sensor or something else. No trouble codes and/or OD light ever came on, so I'm suspecting a mechanical issue.
@@speedkar99 Yeah, still no change. Unfortunately, my 95' es300 is also having the same delayed shift issue. I just purchased the Techstream cable and hoping it shows me the problem. The 95' has an OBD-II connector, so it should work. We'll see...
I need some help with my front wheel drive buick lesabre it has roughly 140'000 miles on it and it starts and runs just fine but it wont go into drive or reverse but it goes into neutral and park and when started there is a hydraulic whine do any of you know what could be wrong
great explanation. i once explained the concept with the help of coffee and biscuit in it. stir tge coffee and the liquid will spin the biscuit with it. i donno concept was explained or not 😉
thank you for your always great videos! i wanna ask you please, i have a subaru xv crosstreck, i performed myself a fluid change following the MT chanel here in youtube, ive always flet something strange and i thougt the new cvt fluid could fix, or at less soft the problem...it kept going and i saw a video explaining how often this transmition have a failure in the tork lock up solenoid...ive measure my solenoid and i saw one of them not measures properlly... it seems to be it...bad solenoid...my question is...can a bad solenoid ruin or brake a good torque converter?...should i try to fix this as soon as posible?...subaru dosent sell only solenoid...they give the entyre valve body...its ok if i buy only solenoid from amazon or ebay?...thank you very much.
Haven't yet got your reply on my question about idling at the time of coasting down and putting back on 'D' once u need drive at the botton of the hill? Is there any harm to transmission system due to this? Hope this time i can have ur reply!
He can add to this or correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that putting an automatic in neutral at highway speed can potentially damage the transmission because in neutral the fluid pump is not being driven. Or perhaps it's being driven but only at idle speed, so it is not producing a sufficient flow to adequately lubricate the transmission. I'm assuming this I'd the same reason you're not supposed to flat-tow an automatic vehicle with the transmission in neutral, at least above a certain speed or for more than a certain amount of miles. Generally your owners manual will say not to do this above like 35mph or for more than 5-10 miles, or something similar. I'm guessing this is because there is no flow or insufficient flow through the fluid cooler, it starts to build up excessive heat which cooks the transmission fluid, which then fails to properly lubricate the transmission components. I guess when shifting into neutral with the engine running, the transmission pump is probably at least running at idle speed? So I would imagine it's not quite as bad as towing the vehicle at highway speed with the pump not turning at all. But still not a good idea, and it likely wont save you much gas anyway.
@@KY.0009 Thanks for sharing your opinion. The oil flow at 'N'utral condition is the pump flow rate at dedicated enginge nutral rpm, but Not no flow, as the pump is driven by input shaft. Since at 'N'utral/moving vehicle condition, the gear sets are not engaged, the lubrication demand and generated heat in transmission is not as much as the case that it's on 'D'rive. The difference with 'N'utral/stopped case is that the output shaft also running. Hence I doubt how idling can harm the transmission?! On the other hand, once you wanna put it back to D from N to push some 'D'rive, specific gear sets are brought to service based on the vehicle speed and engine rpm. This is determind and actuated by Mechatronic. I also wonder if this could cause a harm to transmission?
