How accurate are air rifles at long ranges? 100 yards sub moa?

Pushing my limits with the sub12 Air arms xti50
part 2 of my long range challenge and testing wind drifts in high winds at long ranges
I'm hoping to eventually get some more low wind days to try for sub moa groups, now I'm getting more familiar with how the xti performs in the wind
it shoots quite differently to my Anschutz 9015 and the wind drifts are quite different to what I'm used to but I'm learning it quickly . i still need to prep some pellets,give them a good sorting and weigh them for further long range testing.
i thought id broken the xti,it turns out id just ran it low on air.. it was funny when i realised my mistake..bit of a fail on my behalf..
im still using the jsb heavies and they are performing great at the long ranges. they run at around 710fps for 11.7ftlb
i have tested the 8.4 grain jsb exacts and they are much harder to judge the wind drift at the extended ranges, the heavies are proving to be much more consistent in the wind.
heres a link to the first part of the series where i made my first attempts at 100yds with the xti...
• Long range 100 yard ai...
im using the falcon endura ffp scope at 20x magnification ,tier one mounts and a standard air arms xti50 with a few cosmetic tweeks

I think Tilly should do this challenge with a springer like Gary Chillingworth did.

Gary's much better than Iam with the springers. I hope he has another go now the hft world's is done. It was too close to the world's to be messing with scopes when he had a crack at it.

Great vid. Especially the wind drift. I can see the more you practice this, the more you'd get a 'feel' for it.

You sure do mate, it eventually becomes something of an intuition judging the wind, much the same with range finding by eye. Plus it's fun to push out of our normal comfort zones at times😉

Found this such an interesting video, it’s doing what I personally try and avoid, shooting on very windy days. It’s certainly challenging and can see it can be rather addictive in getting the required results. Many thanks for the inspiration 🙏

Hi nick, it's well worth some time in the wind.. It's an amazing challenge but I find I learn way more about what's happening down range in the wind with all the aiming off amplified significantly

Only just discovered your channel and it is fantastic if I had seen it earlier it would have saved me a fortune in pellets. Keep it coming I am ready if you live down south I would l would gladly buy you a beer in exchange for a chat.

On the point where hold off was too much for the crow. This could be because the crow was lower to the ground and the wind shear was less. If your paper target aim point and crow are at the same height this effect would be cancelled out. Really enjoy your videos.

Morning mate, I was thinking along the same lines, and when out at 100yds on the fox I was noticing similar ,or atleast I think I was seeing similar. It's hard at that range to draw any real conclusions whilst I'm still getting a grasp on what's going on down range. I might well have a go with the rear mono pod to reduce my input a bit and try and get cleaner results. It's all been great fun though and I'm desperate to get out and try again 😉

Great video and shooting as usual... Haven't tried shooting at range in those conditions certainly getting plenty of drift

It's an eye opener for sure mate and definitely worth some time in the stronger winds. It might just be useful info if it whips up strong in a competition. Might atleast mean a plate and not a donut...😉

Great video, like the accuracy with the heavies. My HFT500 loves them in 4.52.

The heavies are pretty much my go to pellets nowdays for most my shooting. Pretty accurate and consistent in the wind 😉

Practice in the wind and you will get a second sense for it, when I was about 26 I went to my mothers on a very windy day 50 yards to the bottom of the garden on a fir tree sat a Magpie swaying in the wind, he was right at the top, using my recently acquired BSA Super star in .22, does anyone remember them, and a nikko stirling 4x40 scope I lined him up as I said it was windy so I aimed high right for the head shot, literally as I squeezed the trigger he took off, folded in half and hit the deck, the pellet passed through his thigh and came out his neck, don't misunderstand me I was more shocked than you but if you shoot in the wind it will build your confidence only unlike me not on a living animal I was lucky!

Finally got to have a go at 100y with the Pro Target which is set up in FT trim currently. Conditions were ok but not ideal, the range is near the coast so rarely get wind free days over there. Wasn't sure if the FT scope would cope with 100y as it tops out on the px way before 100y, so know an element of px error will be in there. short explanation of the results on video, apologies for orientation, youtube novice! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nFsSU8QJgEw.html

Nice one Dave, I'll have a watch tonight The farm is only a couple miles from the North sea, on a high ridge so it's always swirling around there. If you want to borrow a scope that can dial to 100yds I've a spare I'll lend you to play with 😉
@daveramshead8029
@daveramshead8029 8 месяцев назад
@@tillysgunstocks cheers mate it's not the dialling to 100 that's a restriction, it's the focal range I've got the FT scope set to. The result was reasonable for an ad hoc go, would like an unchoked barrel to stick on my custom gun to run slugs out to 100 next 😁

Interesting video a bit of wind makes for a interesting shoot RWS super dome really drift in the wind compared to the JSB
@tillysgunstocks
@tillysgunstocks 8 месяцев назад
They do indeed, most the rws aren't too stable at the further ranges. Keep them sub 45yards and they are quite predictable, which is most important. Some pellets are very unpredictable and i find a real headache to use at range unless it's calm.

Thank you for the video, Can you do this with a springer at 100 yards ? And did you sort the pellets or clean them ?
@tillysgunstocks
@tillysgunstocks 8 месяцев назад
Could I do it with a springer? Maybe... I was once a pretty decent shot with the clockwork rifles,but it's been a few years since I've shot a springer... So far I've not had chance to prep any of the pellets for the long range shooting. I really need too though 😎

I'd say yeh kind of but it would be difficult to be this accurate at that range. I have a HW97 and shoot it quite often. Put it this way I am shocked how accurate this guy is at 100 yards. I never shoot as far out as 100 yards because it's just too far away to be accurate for me at least anyway. I'd have to seriously adjust my sights for that!! Have in said that I don't shoot lying prone with a shooting bag like this. I use a shooting stick sat down which is a bit more difficult. This video has inspired me to give 100 meters a go lying prone though!

I like the rabbit bell target which last time I used it with a HW100 at 64yds I managed to hit it 11 times on the trot but we started laughing so that was that 😂 but I like shooting golf balls in the wind, so far 12/12 in 15-20mph 110yds, but FAC Air 😁
