How well does Fate/Grand Order portray Roland, the greatest of Charlemagne's Twelve Paladins? How close is Roland's in-game version to his historical and mythical counterpart? In this video we delve into his character design, in-game skills, and characterization in order to determine that, followed up by giving it a grade in terms of its historical accuracy. Just to explain what's going on with some of the comments, Roland (Or SPOILER The Black Silence) is one of the protagonists in the game Library of Ruina by Project Moon. He's also based on the character from the literary work 'Orlando Furioso' and is very beloved by the game's fandom (deservedly so, as he's a very well-written character). Whenever something related to him appears, the Project Moon Sleeper Agents show up. Great video, by the way.

Roland and blackbeard suffer the same fate of being a comic relief, sometimes at the expense of what is supposed to be a more serious individual. However even as he serves a comedic purpose, he is as you said: a reliable albeit silly ally, and we somewhat frequently get a glimpse of the real noble knight hiding beneath the goofs and gags. Thankfully, unlike a certain pirate, roland got to properly shine as the dedicated knight he is, and I actually like that most of the heroes from the matter of france end up as people who could easily be underestimated because of their comedic/unserious nature despite holding (and showing) great power. In fact, it's the exact type of character I love and get infatuated with (saito hajime being so laidback yet so skilled is another example). If only the blackest of beards would finally show us why he became the most infamous pirate in history I'd love him way more, just imagine a berserker version of him as some kind of demon made of smoke and powder. Anyway, now more than ever, I'd really like to see ruggiero properly appear in fate. Great job on these videos, keep up the good work I'm eager to see what's next. Also, since "astolfo" will mainly give you fate related results, you could try his other name for research: estout (though I don't know if it'll be that much better for finding significant stuff tbh)

In the mandricado's my room voice line about Roland he is surprised Roland isn't naked and Roland says he wasn't naked when mandricado met him anyway. And mandricado says he just thought he would be naked since it was big part of his legend. That might be why fgo use his nakedness that much.

Yeah, a friend brought up something that I never really noticed. FGO can be a bit... rude(?) when it comes to non-japanese servants. And I feel like Roland is a big show of it. A majority of Japanese servants are treated with multiple layers of complexity and if they are weird, it is in association with other quirks and their personality. Kintoki is a big brute of a man with a golden heart who was once feral (according to Ibuki's interlude she had to put a spell on him so he wouldn't eat human flesh), but he isn't defined by that one point of his history. While Roland always brings up going naked. Funnily enough, if Roland was a Berserker it'd at least add up since he wouldn't have his sanity. It isn't a 100% of the time thing, but once he pointed that out to me, there did seem to be quite a pattern.

I feel like there's enough notable exceptions among Japanese servants to suggest that this isn't an intentional thread. Minamoto no Raikou, Ushiwakamaru/Yoshitsune, and Benkei are all extremely famous cultural heroes who are reduced to extremely questionable depictions especially in the case of the former two.

It's not just an FGO thing. Lots of Japanese media have a tendency to focus on Japan to the expense of other regions. I actually respect FGO for being one of the least egregious offenders in this regard because it's clear in many cases that they do their research and who can really blame them for putting special emphasis on their own cultural heroes? They might not even realize they are doing it. Bias is a natural thing that you have to constantly be on the look-out for if you are to avoid it.

Definitely feel like the door sacrifice is a last minute addition in Traum because they forget that Roland is in the story. We get that it's inmune to Johanna's power and that's it. No other feat like blocking Joyeuse Ordre which is the NP that destroy Constantine's NP. Because of that, it makes the trade off of the miracle feel way smaller than the price he has to pay. Doesn't help that he doesn't have anymore than a few banter outside of the battle before that point so his sacrifice doesn't hit hard at all compare to Mandricado.

Tbf to fgo, thats what a Servant is. They're outright stated to be very specificly a shade or shadow of an aspect of a heroic spirit brought into the world to act as a familiar.

@@natoriousthehopeful2786 Yeah it's easy to forget because they DO manage to make the servant into a full person using that aspect, but it's easiest to see when you look at servants with multiple class summonings like Cu. Saber is his kid form built from during his time as the replacement Guard dog. The lancers are both his legend as a warrior after his training with Scathach and still manage to be completely different, with proto coming off as "younger", Caster from his runecraft and "shenanigans", and berserker from Medb's fantasies. Yet none of these forms have his iconic warp spasms that need him to be dumped into a barrel of cold water and have naked women pampering him to pull him out of.

While it's interesting how the often mention him and his interesting hobby in fate not in real life I do understand why the mention it so often or rather if I saw someone do that in front of me my view of them would not change but wouldn't be the same and that'll definitely be something I would remember them for much to their and my own dismay.

I didn't know that Roland died from blowing his own brain up by blowing his horn so hard in the Song of Roland. When I was reading the Wikipedia article while I was doing a deep-dive on the literature surrounding him, the Wiki gave the impression that the reason Roland died was because he was cut down by Olivier, who was implied to have been blinded in the battle and simply striking at the next target. There was also a reading later in the article from a Literature professor or something that rather than Olivier being blind, he cut down Roland intentionally, because it was Roland's hubris in not blowing the horn that had lead to the death of all of their friends and allies, and he wanted to put an end to his friend's madness. That Roland actually died desperately calling for aid puts a totally different spin on how I had interpreted the events (from a second-hand account).

I don't blame the devs for making Roland a silly character, I've spent a lot of classes in high school learning about the carolingian cycle, and the whole thing can be summarised as a renaissance romantic action anime, it's fundamentally just highschool DxD but with knights and less panty shots. At some point Bradamante gets her hands on a magic book that allows her to summon magic swords from the sky that fall upon her enemies, if that ain't anime I don't know what is.

As an amateur video creator, in order to make videos that can stand out enough that other people want to actually watch them? I have to make the most of what few talents I do have. I don't know how to animate, I only know some basics of video editing, I have only a little competence at cleaning up the sound so that it sounds at least somewhat tolerable, and I have to do everything with the barest of resources. But what I do have is the ability to write and the ability to do research. I am very well practiced with both, and so I make the most of that to try to make these videos work. While I do miss details here and there, and people point them out in the comments, I do catch quite a bit - such as learning about how Jalter's NP name is screwy. :o
