Hey Beth! To get the new belt seated in properly, you don't need to drive the bike. Turn the drive wheel either way and you will see the belt work its way to the top. This is the same clutch system as I have on my sled (snowmobile) and have done this many times. Enjoyed your video, thanks!
That is an industrial torque drive that been around for over 100 years. My 1975 Rokon Enduro motorcycle had a similar drive assy. There is definitely a trick to changing out the belt. What is interesting is that these belts wear from the sides not on the top and bottom(where the teeth are). It will become narrower as it wears. You did a good job. Thanks for sharing this.
It's called a centrifugal clutch. It was common on ToteGoats, Cushmans, Rokons, Go-Karts, etc. It's the poor man's automatic transmission. Sadly, Can-Am could do a lot better.
@@thehoneybadger8089 I was a Rokon dealer in the 1970's and we modified our's extensively. Salisbury Drives made theirs and we changed out the springs on both the drive and driven clutches and got a lot more performance out of it.
I love the fact that you might be a little intimated to do the install but you try it anyway and you don't give up. I appreciate the fact that you show your struggles (we all have them doing something new) and try to explain how you worked through them. Great job and thank you for sharing. I always am learning something new from you!
Love you very authentic videos 👍.....As a retired heavy equipment mechanic....I also appreciate that the folks who write service manuals, seldom get their hands dirty!😎
Planning on getting a Ryker in 4-5 months, but already subscribed and learning. I hate others working on my vehicles, cause I want it done right. If mistakes are made, it's on me, but I'm pretty particular. Thanks for the vids.
Just did my belt and plugs on my Ryker yesterday after watching your videos. Saved myself a lot of money. Forgot to check the rotation on the belt before getting it on. I got lucky, and it was right, lol. Thank you for your videos.
Thank you very much for giving us confidence before we wrench our Rykers! I just did my wife's 2019 600 Ryker. The new drive belt number for the 600 ACE is 422280656. This part number supersedes the former 422280654. A quick test in the garage proved that the new belt got rid of the clunk at take off, which is awesome. We'll see next summer if this lasts. A couple of tricks I learned: Removing the muffler does helps a lot when trying to put the cap back on. It's only one bolt and a two spring clamp (but the springs are tricky to put back on if you've never done this). Finally, steering the wheels full lock to the left helped me get the clamshell higher up in the air.
I just wanted to say that I enjoy ever video you post. You’re so down to earth. After watching a few of your videos in my ryker research phase, I decided to purchase a ryker rally. I’m still in the new phrase but I’m enjoying it. Thanks for all the great videos you post. And btw you’re not pretending to be a mechanic, you are one for all the work you do on your ryker! 🤗
Thank you for the drive belt installation instructional video and showing the problems encountered when installing the belt. It was also very interesting to see what the actual Ryker CVT looked like.
Great job! The tool you used you should put something under the bolt where it is turning on the clutch assembly so it does not damage the metal as it is softer. And from what I've seen you should be able to hand spin the clutch assembly and it will retighten. This is the identical setup 2 Can-Am side-by-sides, or most typical side by sides. There are many videos on them. I just watched this because I've never seen it done on a bike 👍👍👍
U are pretty smart and your videos help a lot. I am waiting for my Ryker Rally 22 I use to ride motorcycles 🏍 .. I am now Can-Am Ryker.. Thank God for them because as we get older holding up a motorcycle ain't easy...much love and thank you so much. I live in Pittsburgh PA where we love a good ride..
I bought a used Ryker 600 in May. It has less than 10,000 miles on it, but it's a 2019 model - and according to the previous owner, still has the original belt. He didn't think it needed replacing until the 12000 mile maintenance cycle. I haven't had any problems, but I may change it out anyway. And after watching your video, I no longer feel I've been denied essential, need-to-know information.... 🙂
Amen to the last comment. I had a CanAm Commander several years ago, and the CVT was practically the same setup. As you back off the pressure, from the tool, that is against the pully, spin the upper pully by hand. Probably need to scotch the wheels and have the machine in neutral. As you spin the upper pully, the belt will automatically climb higher inside the upper pully.
You can pull the shifter halfway between drive and reverse and it will put it into neutral.. This will allow you to spin the big pulley and get the belt off easily. Great video!👍
You will love it! Keep riding/stay young!!! Ps you may want to take can-am's 3 wheel riding class. Worth every penny and gives you a sense of riding 3 wheels vs 2 (very different riding).
First time changing out drive drive I did not read manual book because Italy words my bike was 2007 Piaggio mp3! I started watching you tube and learn how change it out that way! An Thanks for the video so much!!
Thanks so much Beth, this video was a great help… we jacked up the back wheel off the ground and then started the motor and gave the throttle a little turn and the belt tightened up very well ❤
I have the same manual and one thing about all the manuals is they are NOT the most accurate. They will get you in the general area but you are going to have to remove a lot more... just make sure you take photos before removing so you know how it went before you took it apart. This also aids in not having everything back together and having to reopen the damn machine because you left a part out. Because I have Can-Am Mavericks the belt swap is pretty easy but I don't change them out until, one, I either shred one or it starts to slip and I drive my Mavericks a lot harder than I do my Ryker. So I'll probably just inspect the belt rather than change it out but a great video for those who just have a Ryker... Great JOB... 👍🏼
@@RykerRydes Lots of photos when doing any job especially when it comes to doing a teardown and replacement or upgrade is always a good idea when and if you are not doing it on a regular basis... The nice thing is the invention of the cellphone now allows for this right on the spot so no need to run and grab the camera once your done you can always delete the photos... 👍🏼
One of your best videos. You shared the experience of both positions well. I appreciate your efforts to help me understand the feeling, challenges and safety considerations of a passenger ride.
Great video. Over my years in industrial maintenance I have worked with many variable speed sheaves. The spring tension is insane so be very careful. We had a new mechanic take one apart even though it had a label that said ware safety glasses and never take apart contents under pressure. Well, it blew apart flew about 12 feet in the air and split his chin open requiring him to get five stitches. Sorry long story great video buy the tools and do it right.
Don't know if this has been mention or not in other comments already but when you put a new belt like this on you need to spin the drive to get the belt to tighten up. Just spin it by hand and that is what tightens it back up after installation so it doesn't have the problem you had. Just thought I would mention that.
maybe an option for the belt : put your bike in neutral, (between fwd and reverse) this will free up the upper wheel of the cvt, and while releasing tenssion on the center bolt, you can turn the wheel for the belt to set itself in position (loosen, then rotate, then loosen then rotate...) maybe that could work to... (my2cts)
Great job! I guessed the wrong belt. Yep, bringing mine in. Tough job! I think I'll wait for about 18,000 miles before I have it changed. Thank You for the video. Have a great weekend!
You get paid good money by RU-vid when you hit a certain amount of hits and I believe you're over those hits so you're doing okay and you benefited quite well Plus Can-Am has got to be in love with you cuz it's free advertisement if they're not paying you to do these videos by now they are very educational down to detail and you're very good and patient at what you do
Thank you so much for your kind words. I wouldn’t exactly say that I get paid “good money”!!!! It pays for my accessories, which in turn keeps my channel going. Ride safe and thanks for watching!
Wow! You are fearless. Love this one, problem-solving at its best. Things rarely go perfect the first few times, I like the fact that you are not afraid to keep trying until you get what you wanted.
Hi Beth.............awesome job on that cvt belt 🙂 thats the thing people shy away from BIG jobs and would rather pay a shop to do the work. At least you learnt abit about your bike. Only found about the ryker the other day, yes I would love one , love the 3 cylinder 900cc engine, I remain impressed Ma,am thank you for your time
Word of advice, you should always blow out the secondary & primary clutches with air to remove belt debris. And also take a scotch brite pad with break cleaner and clean inside of the clutches. Then use a rag and wipe them down to clean of the residue. Just some advice, I could see belt dust on the clutches in the video. That’s why I was bringing this to your attention. This makes sure the clutches have a clean surface to grab the belt. Not doing so can cause belt slip over time and damage the belt and the clutches which can get costly if having to replace or rebuild them. And just do a thorough observation of the clutches conditions to make sure nothing is lose or has any chips dents or physical wear. And regarding the belt replacement, you need to always crank the unit after you swap the belt and allow the clutches to engage the belt to rise to the top the secondary clutches.
Just curious. When the motor is idling does the belt just slip until the centrifugal weights tightens the belt or does it have a centrifugal clutch as well? If the belts slips adling is it bad to have it idling for a long time?
@@JayDee-xj9lu no it doesn’t. The primary is not engaged at idle to bite down on the belt. Only during acceleration does the primary engage and begin to bite down on the belt transferring to secondary therefore thru too the transmission to start the movement.
@@Cinccinatti_C3 Ok Thanks. So the primary does both, with a centrifugal clutch and changes the diameter of the pulley . Very clever setup. Normally in a car cvt to change the steel belt is very expensive. The Ryker setup is simple and cheap to fix. I wonder how long the belt could really last. Did you measure the width of the old belt to see how much wear you had.
Thanks for the vid! I just had my 12,000 maintenance done at 13,500 miles. Dealer did it but I had them skip the belt replacement. I'm going to roll the dice and do it next year...unless it explodes between now and then. 🤣 I will be at 18,000+ miles.
Thank you for this video. You rock and do the stuff no one else does. I was scared to do this and I have been doing car maintence myself for my whole life. I just wanted one video of some one doing it and you delivered. Thank you again.
Great video. I would have not had this much patience LOL. Just looking at the belt, I honestly think that the belt can go for 18k miles interval if not more, but I guess we have to go with what Can Am says.
Hey Zia! What I failed to mention is that the belt wears from the sides not the "teeth". I should have measured the width both to make a fair comparison. AGAIN, I am NOT a mechanic by any means.
Hello Beth, so I put in my cvt belt and I ran into the same issue as you. I took my ryker for a spin but my belt still sounds loose. I can hear it slapping around a little. I have to take her apart again to take a look, but if you have any more feed back or ideas on how to get it to fall into place please let me know. Thanks in advance.
@@MSCRFamily sorry you are having trouble. Would you like to set up a time when we could video chat? Also, read the other comments. Lots of great tips on here.
@@RykerRydes I figured my issue out. The secondary cvt had a roller broken and jammed inside not allowing it yo close. Your video is perfect. I appreciate you and your videos.
I never subscribe but ya know what, you've taught me a lot. I appreciate it!! Thanks for taking the time to make these. Super informative and easy to understand
Beth I had my 2020 900 Ryker CVT belt changed by dealer at 10552 miles 6/11/2021, tech said my belt changed came earlier than most, I do a lot of riding here in Texas. So I need to get a service manual to do other work myself. Great videos you have for working on your bike.
From my experience had my transmission message hit at 11k, waited until 12k miles to actually have belt swapped and I could tell ya I lost some top end speed and overall acceleration. I did have the dealer swap the belt out and I’m pretty sure I could’ve stretched it a few thousand more miles. BRP wants to prevent people from blowing belts out, as it’s a pretty violent scenario and makes a mess inside the belt housing, so better safe than sorry. I really appreciate the video. This transmission is damn near the same as their can am X3 but the Ryker is a oriented weird. Thanks again
thank you for posting this. I say that because my Ryker has been feeling like it is "pulling" and not full of gusto. It is also good to know What may be causing an issue that way you can tell the dealer/shop what the issue is or do it yourself.
Great how-to video, I will explain why the old one "Looks" to you just as good as the new one. The way the clutch works is it pinches the belt, meaning it gets the grip from the sides of the belt not the face( Inside or out) If you would take measurements on the width of the belt you would see there would be a difference. it also should be worn at an angle on the edge on the inside. When the engine gets enough RPM to engage the clutch the belt will slip a little bit every time you take off. This is what wares down the belt It can even wear divots in the edge of the belt. If you really want to know how much its worn at your belt change get a caliper and measure the width.
You are 100% right about measuring the width of the belt. I actually mention that in a separate video. Thank you so much for watching and your comment.
All the other Can Am belt changes I watch spin the big wheel at the end to tighten the belt to the pully? You might have to put it in false neutral to spin the Big wheel. Great job preparing us for the unexpected! If you measure the width of the old drive belt you can compare with the belt specs in the manual!
@@RykerRydes I screw it up and have to have it taken to the dealer anyway and it cost me double. Cost for the toll, and cost of the dealership anyway besides my time trying to do it myself.
You had me worried for a moment Beth. I was watching where you were putting your fingers inside the pulley assembly. Veiwing through the cameras lens looked like you might have broke a finger or at a minimum a busted knuckle. Good job!
@@RykerRydes my husband doesn't know it but he is helping me change this thing over the weekend. From $1,200 out of pocket at the shop to $200 on my own its a NO BRAINER🤯
Good video. At 80, my 207K mile Kawasaki Concours was getting a little heavy for me, so just picked up a used 2022 Sport with a little over 3K miles on it. I do all my own work so videos like these are being squirreled away for future reference. Comment: CVT belts do wear from the sides because they are constantly being "pinched" by the two sheaves as they open and close up which alters the overall output ratio. Also, when working on rotating machinery like you were, good safety practices have you disconnecting the battery to eliminate the chance of any unintentional rotation that can cause serious injury, or worse. Subscribed, so keep up the good work.
Thanks for the comment and congrats on your Ryker. As far as the wear on the CVT belt, what you said makes perfect sense (I am NOT a mechanic)!! Great advice about disconnecting the battery too!! Ride safe, have fun!!
Hey Beth. Great to see you getting your hands dirty again. Noticed your back at home property again. Hope all is good with you. Later from the Hot and Humid Smoky Mountains 👏
I always ask myself what’s the worst thing that could happen? If you try it and fail, you still have to take it to the dealer. Thank you so much for watching!
Awesome Job as always Beth!. I'm at 6000 miles, but I'm going to order the puller locking tool and pulley adapter so I'm ready when that message comes up. The cost of that belt though-WOW!
Beth this is perfect timing. My ryker just gave me a code "transmission maintenance required" I'm at 10k miles and iv had it 2 years So I know it's my belt.
hey beth , that part the belt goes over is basically a split pully the more you tighten or loosen it in this case the narrower it gets raising the belt thats what puts the right tension on the belt and causes it to ware the sides .would be interesting to measure the with of the old and new one . job well done !
Glad to see that you posted the video. I think you are the first person to do so. I am only at about 6500 miles but I ordered the tools anyway. We are hotter than you out here in AZ so glad I won't need to do this til this winter. BTW Beth, when are you coming out this way to ride the Devils Highway? I think we can get a few more riders here to join in the fun.
Cool vid Beth but if I were you I'd run some tie down traps to your handlebars from the clam shell for safety in case your wood fails or slips out or does whatever etc. Safety first!
I have to let you know that the belt was on correctly after you have installed it. There is really no way of screwing it up. When you install the pulley adapter and tighten up the puller/locking tool, this pushes back the back plate and therefore relasing the friction off the belt from the sides and from that point you are able to pull the belt off the drives. Unlike regular belt driven engines, the Can-Am Ryker, just like the Can-Am Maverick Side by Side off road ATV works in exactly the same way. The belt is tensioned from the sides when the two plates move inwards tightening and increasing the friction on the sides of the belt. The CVT works by the two side plates opening and closing and the clutch engages the belt. The faster engine revolution closes the two plates and lower engine revolution opens the plates thereby releasing the tension off the belt and decreasing propulsion. When you took the Ryker for a run that's exactly what happened. The increased engine revolution caused the two plates to tighten againts the belts and the engine's revolution engages the clutch. The higher the engine revolution, the tighter the belt gets and the faster the Ryker goes.
Color me impressed. Mine will be due for the change in September, isn't that when you plan to visit? I told Tim that we have a job to do and he said what we. Really Beth I am amazed at your ability to get things done. After we changed out the final drive, I feel like we also can tackle any job.
Try taking the belt off of the bottom pully frist. Install it on the top pulley first. roll the bike forward before putting it back together. That should word the belt into the proper position. These are only guesses on my part.
Good question! NO it does not go away. It will require going to the dealership and having them do a quick reset. I am researching now how and where to buy that device.
@@RykerRydes I have a guy that has a warehouse full of them its called B.U.D.S II and they're $600. it give you 1 year of a mechanics license and the kit to reset.
Hi Beth, loved the video! I think once the belt is loose you take it off from the bottom first and when you put it back put the top in first than the bottom. My 2 cents!
Great video I've learned a lot from your video's and I thank you for that. I do have one question after the installation do you have to reset the computer if so how.. or does it do it on it's own?
