“I am a professional!” I totally love everything plants. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you saying “I got this as a cutting about 3 years ago” vs what most plantubers say- I’ve had this plant for quite a while (which gives us no idea how quickly the plant grows!). You da man, Jeff! 😊
@EverythingPlants

I think what I meant to say is I'm not a professional lol. That's one thing that I was always curious about when I started out with plants was how old a certain plant was when watching a video. You always expect plants to grow at an accelerated rate, but in reality they all grow pretty slow.

Just a small tip, you really do not want to water cacti and succulents right after repotting. The roots get wounds from removing them from their old soil. You run the risk of introducing harmful pathogens to your roots like bacteria and/or fungi. This is of course in exception to certain epiphytic cacti and succulents, some of those can take a light watering after repotting. But, the cacti and succulents that come from arid climates, like the ones you repotted today, can wait 7-10 days before watering following being repotted. They are already used to going without water for long periods, so this will not effect them whatsoever. If you ask any experienced growers of these types of plants, they will give you the very same advice.

Tip: when getting your pots at dollar store, get some wooden/bamboo skewers (they can come in two sizes, about 12 inches & 21/2 to 3ft). I use smaller ones in repotting to remove soil from roots, using blunt side of skewer, not pointy side. Using pointy side tends to remove more roots. I also use skewers as stakes to prop up plants. Also, dollar store has decent garden gloves. Save you hands, man!!

Great tips. A small nitpick, is that anaerobic doesn’t mean “bacteria”, it means literally “lack of air” (and the opposite is… aerobic, like the 80’s workout thing 😊). The roots cannot get enough oxygen so they start rotting. So overwatering, not enough drainage, not enough evaporation, or a kratky plant sitting outside after a heavy rain, all possible culprits… (just lost two pepper plants after last days typhoon in Japan 😢).

If a plant is root bound in a pot, once you take off all of the old soil wouldn't you be able to fit the roots back into the original size pot with new soil? It seems like it's only squashed into the shape of the original pot because of the soil.
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Год назад
Normally if it's root bound, you want to upsize it into one pot size larger so the roots have the ability to spread out. If it's too squished in a pot, depending on the type of plant, it may dry out too fast and you can get leaf drop. The plant may just decline much quicker. Now if you want to keep it in the same size pot and you have a root bound plant, I like to remove a portion of the roots so root pruning so that I can keep it in the same size pot. Does that make sense?

A bit of a challenge to decide where to start. It seems cacti are not your specialty. The previous potting mix you used in the past had far too little drainage, needed to be boosted with pumice. The new one looked OK. You fail to put a gravel/rock top dressing on the pot. This is an important step and is universally practiced at cactus nurseries. By the way, I'm in Tucson. I grow a large collection (200 or so) of cacti in pots ranging to 27" diameter. Also, I'm a retired nursery owner. Have grown these for years,. Cacti can grow quickly given the right light and soil and watering. Just lightly loosen roots in pot bound plants before repot. No need to attack them and bare root them. You demolished the roots on the Mammillaria, then put it in way too small a pot for optimal growth. These are plants that form clusters. A bowl at least 12 inches in diameter would have been more appropriate. After the attack, it probably won't develop pups soon. I guess I'll expect a Canadian to have limited cactus skill. If someone views this tutorial, for goodness sake, don't copy. Cacti can cling to life in a northern climate, but if you want them to grow, add lots of light and for most species, keep them warm away from cold windows. Visit Tucson. See the beautiful large specimens in our gardens. In as little as a couple of years I can grow a full 14" pot here of many species. Cactus beginners often confuse survival/suspended animation for a happy plant. They will survive much mistreatment, but you'll love them so much more if you get them to actually grow. Just starting? Maybe try a pine cone cactus as a first effort. I can go from one or two segments to a full 12" pot in 14 months or so. Mammillaria plumosa clumps up really fast...two years can give a mound with many heads in a 12 to 14" bowl. Give them light, an adequate pot and gentle fertilizing and enjoy!
