When you went to navionics and eastern Tennessee, I was hoping Cherokee Lake! Cherokee is where I fish mainly for striper and hybrid. Am very interested in learning more about cast netting for gizzard shad and this video is the most informative I’ve seen! If this had been Cherokee Lake I’d be dancing right now and I don’t dance!! Thanks for the video!!
terry mise I’m glad you thought so! I tried to cover as much as I could. I’m not very familiar with Cherokee but If it were me, I would just try to find some shallow creeks and throw around. Go out in the early morning and just look for those flips. That’s the easiest way. You may have to drive to 3 or 4 before you find them but once you do they will be there more often than not.
Down River Fishing yeah plenty of creeks with shallow water there. I’d probably start looking maybe an hour before sunrise since I like to be at my area by sunrise searching for striper.
terry mise you can get a shad shack or something linked that and keep them a live for a couple days. Good circulation and cool water will go a long way. They are pricy but worth it!
Down River Fishing yeah I’ve got a nice 45 gallon bait tank that I use for threadfin and alewives. I may just catch some gizzards the evening before and keep the bait tank pumping all night so they’ll be ready to go the next morning. I’ve got access to electric at the marina so I can use that with a 110 volt to 12 volt converter to keep it running all night.
Excellent video. Heading to Dale Hollow Lake in a few days. It's an extremely hard lake for shad so I'm going to try your tips. If you have information on DHL please let me know! Thanks!
Found your channel today. Great content thats really helpful to me. I mainly fish Ft Loudon as I live in Louisville. Maybe I'll see you out there sometime.
I fish Ft. London some and Tellico but mainly Wattsbar. I have finally gotten to where I can throw my cast net good but having trouble finding shad. I have searched the back waters like you said but they seem to get very shallow quickly. I have a good fish finder but obviously doesn’t work in 1 to 2 foot of water. Am I just going the wrong time of year? I have been trying to find shad in January. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Quick question, think 1/4 inch mesh is ok for catching the shallow water gizzards or should I go with 3/8” or 1/2” mesh? All I’ve got are 1/4” mesh nets.
1/4 will work but the problem you will have is catching a shit ton of thread fins. It’s super annoying to try and get them out of the net. The larger mesh will allow most of them to swim free.
Should be a 5min video Look in shallow flats in the back of creeks. Also, it's navionics - like navigation not like Navy And it's a bridge piling, not a pylon. Sorry, I'm just easily pissed tonight
