While the debate over President Donald Trump's proposed wall continues, government money is flowing and tech companies are looking to cash in. Companies like Quanergy and Anduril are working on electronic border solutions that would be more effective and cheaper for taxpayers than building a physical wall.
The U.S.-Mexico border stretches 1,954 miles. About 700 of those miles have some sort of barricade or fence. The rest of the border is rugged landscapes and natural barriers like the Rio Grande River.
CNBC traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border town of Del Rio, Texas to see a prototype of a virtual wall, and also found out why locals in the area would rather electronic surveillance over a physical barrier.

@kchal0 5 лет назад
@@terriesmith8219 interesting comment. I am curious as to what you think about corporations outsourcing labor to bypass minimum wage. In America, you can only go so low ($7.25) but if you outsource you can get much cheaper than that. No amount of wall will stop that from happening.

Honest Congress, honest senators, honest legislators and honest presidents can fined these big corporations for outsourcing fees and charge them higher fees to imports their goods back into America. Do you know that our government subsidize these import fees? Yet they charge small family own company regular import fees. Law makers can also impose zero federal backing and zero federal subsidizes if any big companies should decide to outsource. No more tax payers coming to the rescue. They are on their own. Fail or succeed, the USA will not bail these companies out. If this is put into law, no American company will outsourced to cheaper 3rd world countries simply because the profits won't be worth the hassle. @@shawn8847 That only works if Americans are willing to die for their country because only blood shed will cause a change. Luckily, we have guns. The yellow vest don't. The U.K don't. In order to truly make a significant change, which will still need to be implemented into laws, there is going to have to be a civil war, "americans vs the globalists elites". Also border has to be close, if not closed, then it has to be stricter than what we have now. We can't have people coming in whenever they want. We can't have people over staying their visa. We can't have people jumping the wall and then less than 24 hours later give birth to an American citizens baby. So now her husband and five year old son also have to be granted citizenship because we can't leave her family behind. Birth right citizenship has to be eradicated. The founding fathers only meant for birthright citizenships for freed black slaves. Not for anybody who hop into America. LEGAL immigration is the only way in. No ifs, ands, or but. Cut welfare and free housing and free medical to all illegal aliens. In California, illegals are eligible for welfare and free medical. Other states doesn't make it legal but we still spend money on these ILLEGALS by our government giving out grants to organizations that feed, houses and clothes these ILLEGALS. So in the end, American tax payers still end up paying for illegals. Fyi, the story of the 19 year old Mexican girl who hop the fence, was then caught by border patrol, and less than 24 hours later gave birth to an American citizen is online, on RU-vid if you care to see it. Now our government had no choice but to bring her husband and five year old into America too. Bet she'll breed some more once she settled into America. She's only 19 with two kids already, I doubt she'll stop breeding any time soon.

Sanjog Wayne it doesn’t work like that. You still need people to watch the positives and false positives. You still need people to react. A wall for most cases will not require so much reaction. I would recommend cheap electric drones that can cover 5 square miles at a time or those electric mini planes that have solar cells as wings that can fly all day. Then there is night. It’s just not simple. People are smart and if they want to get over, they will think 24/7 to find a way.

@mistercohaagen
@mistercohaagen 5 лет назад
Yeah, but their wall is only 440 miles at $2million per mile to build and $260million per year to maintain. Israel has mandatory military service, so they don't have to pay people to watch it with sniper rifles, though they do need to occasionally treat their best snipers for erections that last so long, that they're forced to amputate a blackened dead foot from lack of blood supply. They also have extreme mass surveillance and the "Iron Dome" technology. If you really want to live in an increasingly brutal police state... it's a good place to move to. At least the Jewish girls are pretty hot, and you get to see what plausibly effective terrorism looks like, albeit from the offending side. It's a perspective we're certainly used to, but as Americans we only get to watch ours inflicted via TV screens and RU-vid. Not that any of it matters, given how money (human control) is loaned into existence.

There's no single solution to border security. People can tunnel under a wall and they can also tunnel to avoid surveilance. I believe it takes both. A wall will slow them down but you still nedto detect anyonectrying to get over r under the wall that requires surveilance. Surveilance rewquires man power and lots of it. A wall can reduce the manpower needed to do the job. We need both walls and manpower.

A big wall "keeps people from trying to cross" -- a human sensor will not stop people from trying because there is no physical barrier ----how hard is this to understand
@BigtimeBigA
@BigtimeBigA 5 лет назад
Cost of Technology vs Physical wall per mile : less than $500k (tech) vs $24.5 million (ancient wall) Based on this administration’s budget, each mile of physical border wall would cost $24.5 million. According to leading technology entrepreneurs, utilizing off-the-shelf technology to build a Smart Wall would bring the cost-per-mile down to less than $500,000. With proven tracking technology and state-of-the-art drones, we could have a more secure border at a fraction of the cost - and it could be fully operational within a year.

That's what legal immigration is. You tell the government you want in, they check your background to prove you aren't dangerous, and then you get into the country with the complete knowledge of the government. People who immigrate illegally aren't able to be tracked. The people who immigrate illegally and "pay" taxes aren't paying them accurately. They are either stealing someone's identity to pay taxes, or are paying taxes through their employer without the government understanding who they are.

Spending $60billion on a wall that will never stop poor desperate people living next to the richest country in the World trying to escape violence, tyrannical leaders & poverty, however good the wall may be. Permanent Solution: spend the $60billion on a Martial plan by granting soft loans to develop industries in the Central American countries to produce goods currently imported from China. In a few years, these countries can then get out of poverty and US will have richer neighbours that will trade with the US and most Latinos will go back to their own countries. Result: Migrants will go back, illegal immigration stopped permanently, Stop China rising. Most importantly US will benefit from exporting more to richer neighbours.

@@jonathancholak7082 Problem is a wall by itself is not effective. You need people to be guarding the wall at all times. Many people compare building a wall here to Israel's wall. The one issue with the comparison is that Israel wall is only 400 miles, which the US' would need to be over 2,000 miles long. Also, they have mandatory military conscription and so they can put guards on their wall for basically free, which here we'd have to pay for them. On top of that, there they have a policy of shooting anyone that comes near the wall "shoot on sight," and I'm pretty sure the US would not have that... And their wall maintenance is around $260 million a year, so the US' cost would be about $1.3 billion in just maintenance per year as well. I would agree that a wall is a good way to stop some illegals from coming into the US, but it would only be good if they somehow managed to remove like $3 billion of funding from somewhere like the military to fund this cost every year (which they are not gonna do because the military industrial complex has too much power and influence in Washington.)

@NATHANIEL GILLIES without the wall there will be more people coming in, why dig a tunnel when you can just walk across. What happened if something like the caravan with thousands of people in it came to the border, those tech you see in the video can detect people but they cannot stop people and you don't even have enough manpower to control or arrest them when the system detects so many people crossing the border illegally simultaneously, you need a wall to at least slow them down or better discourage them to come at the first place, when they know there is a wall and they cannot just walk across the border, they will think twice before attempting to do it. Those tech is good just like the software or apps on your phone they can do almost anything but without the hardware i.e your phone, they are just lines of code. That's why I think we need all of it, tech to detect them to reduce manpower needed ; a wall to slow them down to give those agents enough time and safety to do their work ; and anti-tunnel technologies and because tunnels are normally dug by organized group, for Israel it is organized terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, while in US it is dug by organized criminal groups like drug smugglers and human traffickers this is also a crucial piece of the puzzle for safety and security.

You're assuming drug cartels don't have infinite money to hire American (or Russian) hackers. And yeah, wall or no wall, you still have the tracking issue, cause a determined person will get over, under or through any wall. Tunnels can be miles long and quite deep (even under rivers), and they're usually used for years to bring drugs in before they're discovered, and the bribery networks on both sides will ensure it won't get shut down before they've already dug two new ones. We have transactional surveillance of every credit card swipe, real time meta data from every cell tower handoff and phone call, plus we have police, homeland security and border patrol. They can come get anyone they want at any time, anywhere. Do me a favor... throw your wallet and birth certificate away, and then try to make it from a southern state to a northern one without using your name. It's possible, but you have to be lucky and cash-rich... and being brown doesn't help. Now if you make it, then try to set up a life, bank account, housing, car, job... okay? Make sense yet? We don't need a wall. As well-armed as Americans are, we also don't all need to simultaneously go into cocaine withdrawal either. Things are the way they are for a reason... calm down, there are plenty of other ways to manifest your racism; plenty of other "thems" for politicians to trick you into fearing and othering.

This represents a reasonable solution where the response time for border control officers can make sensors effective. What wasn't brought out is that besides the additional personnel required to monitor sensors, there's a cost associated with maintaining sensors. The real solution is to put up fortifications (e.g. walls/fences) in remote areas and use sensors in areas where law enforcement can rapidly respond.

Tech wall vs actual wall? What about upkeep? repair cost etc. As tech fails there will always be a bigger and better version to replace the last model, meanwhile the wall will always be a constant, and will diminish in effectiveness over time, no matter how much money you pour into it.

So, if I am calculating this right just to install the LiDaR (Light Detection and Ranging) system along the almost 900 miles of the Rio Grande it will cost $112,500,000 at the two-mile limit of the sensor, add to that the cost of the 24/7-man hours for monitoring and training, the added Border Agents to respond. Just doing this along the river could cost around 400 - 500 Million Dollars a year in man-power, equipment, and repairs. With a well-placed rifle shot or a grappling line and hook, you could create a two-mile wide blind spot. If you overlap like the military does at some locations, you’re looking at $225,000,000 for the installation, one sensor every mile for zero blind spots and the cost for man-power and maintenance is increased to almost ONE BILLION DOLLARS a year. The average pay for a Border Patrol Agent is around $57,000 a year. If you have just nine agents (three per shift/three shifts a day) stationed every three hundred miles along the Rio Grande, you are looking at around 1,600,000 dollars a year just for monitoring the system.
