Such a nice topic, I think we magicians have achieved that people have a strange idea about magic and art in general, it is our mission to make people remember “art” differently. They usually have the conception that they're seeing art by seeing a painting, a sculpture, a poem, among other things, but almost always considering it abstract and almost touching the unintelligible, countless are the occasions when a person sees a famous painting and doesn't understand anything at all, but PRESUME (does not know) that what they are seeing is art, the same goes for a jazz record, a sculpture or a thought of Descartes.

Before continuing to debate whether magic is art, we must first agree on a basic or philosophical definition of art.

One dictionary defines art as "a skill acquired by experience, study, observing or an occupation requiring knowledge or skill (the art of organ building), also the conscious use of skill and creative imagination." By this definition magic would seem to be an art.

First of all - thank you for this video! I find it superb. So, is magic an art? Short answer: Yes. On a more sophisticated level. Is there anything that is intrinsically art? I do not think so. If I paint a picture, I think no-one would consider it art by any stretch of the imagination. I believe the underlying question is: Can "magic" be a vehicle for an artistic expression. My answer: Yes it CAN be. Like painting CAN be a vehicle for an artistic expression. Does that make all magic - or for the sake of this argument all painting - art? Clearly not.

Young "magicians" are not interested in perusing conjuring books...they prefer to watch RU-vid tutorials in order to repeat mechanically card tricks with gimmicks which are performed by "magicians" who rely on TV cameras and edition cuts, and who win TV shows...
