About the Project:
Sunset City is a series based on the US state of Florida. Not just taking inspiration from the most iconic tourist destinations or glamorous beaches, Sunset City will focus on capturing the entire state from North to South. We will cover such cities as Miami, Tampa and Orlando, as well as some towns in between. Most importantly Florida's natural landscaping spanning from the tropical beaches to the vast wetlands of the Everglades.

I live in a decently small town so you wouldnt expect much but an abandoned railroad here was turned into an walking path, but a part of it was left for the local museum, as it was part of our history due to the town being really industrialized and actually had the first mine in the country and currently has the biggest limestone mine in the country. Its actually an museum too lol

That's a nice abandoned railroad and set of bridges and piers you built! But may I make one suggestion: in the Florida Keys the side path is actually a bicycle path because of the busy highway and the long distances. So you might want to exchange the pedestrian walkway into a combined bicycle/pedestrian path.

On the Key West train line. I was fascinated by old pillars and parts of it still standing next to the newer highway when driving through the keys a couple years back. There is a book on the building of the trainline by Flagler in the 1900s called "Last Train to Paradise". It's a fascinating story on the history of Key West and the trainline system connecting all the keys.

A lot of the abandoned rail corridors here in the Los Angeles area (including the ones you showed) were once were part of the Pacific Electric Railway, which was the largest interurban network in the world, transporting both passengers and cargo through Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties over more than 1,000 miles of track. Some of the old PE rights-of-way have been converted into recreational trails, some have been revived with Metro light rail or Metrolink commuter service, and still others are used for freight by Union Pacific (which merged with PE's parent Southern Pacific in the 1990s). However, a large portion of them have disappeared altogether under streets, freeways, and neighborhoods.

I really love the abandoned feel, but during the 80s stuff was only starting to be abandoned since the railroads had only been deregulated a little while ago. Having at least 1 industrial line that’s still operating but only a few times a week on overgrown unmaintained track, just to give the feel that the railroad hasn’t gotten around to abandoning it yet

I live in West Washington State, in a suburb outside Tacoma. Back in the day there used to be a rail line used for Lumber and Coal that ran thru the towns of Orting, South Prairie, Buckley, and Enumclaw. In it's hey day South Prairie used to have tens of thousands living there, but when the coal mining dried up, the importance of the rail line and the city itself vanished. The line got abandoned and the town shriveled to what it is now at just a couple hundred residents. Some years ago the State came and tore up most of the rails, paving a walking trail along the route called the Foothills Trail.

You completely nerddsniped me with the question of what funky rail infrastructure we have in the places we grew up in, ended up spending an hour looking at maps, databases, and forums xD In a town I somewhat grew up in there is a really weird bridge setup crossing a main rail line. 2 bridges, with a carlane each. The southern bridge is angled quite a bit, seemingly for no reason, but it's in fact an old railway bridge. The railway crossed the other one due to, what I can see to be, old station location, and grade. You can still see on satellite view where the line used to run. It's at 57.442472, 9.976105 if you wanna have a look 😄 That town, Hjørring, is just such a mess of roads and rail, I spend hours looking at the national Geodata Agency, hence why I love that area. It wasn't planned in the slightest (And it shows in the traffic), it really just was organically molded by the technology and money they had at the time along with the geography.

Hey Hey, the 80s were a time, where the US started to import japanese and korean cars in a big manner. I think it would be nice to include a rivalry of some sort between a newly established import car dealer and a more traditional car dealership for full-sized american cars, where the american dealer may has to take unconvenient actions to stay in business and keep out his rival.

Although in you map there is not enough space to make a real one, but maybe on one of the island you can create a small abandoned airfield from WW2, and is now being used as a local small airfield/ aviation club so that some light aircraft such as cesna or even some personnal-collected WW2 fighter aircraft can be stationed there.

That’s because this area used to be the approach tracks to the old central station. Since the „new“ station is itself over a hundred years old by now there isn’t much else left but this curious bridge.

Here in Copenhagen we also have a disused trainline, its on Amager and is fittingly called "amagerbanen" (the amager track). It has multiple uses along its lenght, from new roads to city development. And some parts of it have just been left to decay. But most importantly, a lot of it was reused in the construction of the m2 metro line serving the airport.

Yeah. And about 1 kilometer of it still has tracks on it which are being used by a local volunteer group with rail cycles. No steam trains or anything like that, and there are plans to make the area into a bit of a railway themed public park afaik but its still really neat. Though having the ability to run steam trains there would really be the perfect way to have a little railway history in the city.

My city used to have tram/light rail run along side main road and kinda bypassing two of its train station, half of this line was shut down in 80s and the section repurposed as separated line for bikes and parking, the another half still used as commuter rail 30km down south, and since this is same gauge with main line, its not uncommon full sized train with tens of 20ft wagon (usually transporting ballast or cement) to used this line, but nowadays its a two round trip commuter train, and occasional steam train for tour running half-length of line, and yeah since its share sections with main road, whenever trains was going, chaos ensues.

Its not my hometown, but Salt Lake City has a cool reusage of old track. TRAX, the city light rail service, was built fairly recently and on a limited budget. Not wanting to mess with already existing road infrastructure, the Utah Transit Authority set their sights on the old D&RGW Mainline through the city, which had been around for nearly 100 years at this point, and had traded hands many times, eventually ending up under the control of Union Pacific. UP didnt have much use for the line, outside of "renting" it out to Utah Railway and their subsidiaries, so UTA approached them about taking the dilapidated track off of their hands. After a relatively short process, TRAX now had rights over the line, and began retrofitting it for use by light rail trains. Interestingly though, the lines still see local freight service late at night, (I'm talking midnight afterwards) when the need for a light rail train is all but nonexistent. It's kind of a boring story, but I still find it cool that track built a century ago by a company that hasn't existed for half of that time can still find usage in the modern day.

If you are interested in different ways to handle abandoned infrastructure a look at my hometown Berlin might be worth it. In the 20s and 30s it was a fast growing economic hub and political and financial center build for further growth. Though after the war the city never recovered and lost most of its population, its industry and trade due to the wartime destruction, the wall and soviet reparations. So you can see a lot of abandoned infrastructure. Not only abandoned tranelines, old train stations, half finished Metro and suburban lines and so on, but also a lot of old canals, repurposed harbours and very recently also 2 former international airports about whose future usage the citizens and politicians do not yet have come to any sustainable agreement.

Didn’t expect to hear “as good as lipstick on a pig because absolutely nobody is going inside it” in a two dollars twenty video.

Kaseya Centre (FAB / FTX / AA arena) was completed in late '99 worth considering leaving out; idk how strict you're keeping in the 80's timeline since you mentioned building it again? South beach and Brickell are really the best spots in Miami, my limited knowledge of the area but ocean drive really captures the vibe of the SB island, look at all the cool restaurants that have outside dining spill onto the one way road near the rainbow crosswalk, would love to see an attempt at that in game ^^ ive lived in the Boca Raton area which is kinda the opposite in terms of planning.. (unnecessarily huge roads, almost zero walk ability, very car centric. the only positive is the weather and the nice apartment complexes) wouldn't be Florida without that representation imo, since you merged FLL and MIA

Love the stream and your content ❤. But I’m just wondering if it’s possible to maybe have the background music a bit louder in the Timelapse’s? I understand if not, and all the best. Love this series and hopefully Oceania can be back soon!

You can have a shared train car bridge. Back when cars where less invasive it could have been used like that

We got a few freight lines in Helsinki which have been mostly repurposed as bike "motorways" or demolished, etc..

Funny how Miami is looking to expand commuter rail right now through some freight lines.

In singapore we have this island that is very touristy called Sentosa, I think this maybe of interest to add to the hotel on the island

You should try build something a bit like the hard rock stadium in Miami, with the race track around it but just in an older era? i think it would suite the city quite well in a 'new development' possibly

a small water park/large and varied pool area would look nice next to a resort

You should add some US Navy ships around Key West, in the 80s the US was getting stronger and stronger and it would make sense to see some military base/ smaller port near Key west.

Hey an idea if your trying to go for the key west vibe would be to turn one of the remaining islands into the airbase next to key west? It has tons of potential and google earth has some good images
