Reversing Entropy with Maxwell's Demon
• Reversing Entropy with...
The Sun: an entity worshipped as a god throughout time and across cultures. The source of all life and sustenance for our little blue space rock, and also a force of unthinkable destructive power. But soon humanity will reach out its collective hand and come closer to touching the Sun than we ever have before with the launch of the Parker Solar Probe.

*James Clerk Maxwell* was the one who used the word "demon" in 1867. How else were they going to discuss the topic without at least *mentioning* the name? I swear, the people who got overly offended at that and acted like it was even PBS' phrasing or choice of words to begin with were just being ludicrously absurd, if you ask me...

The Carrington event was actually a pair of CMEs, a lesser one that reached Earth on august 29 1859 and caused widespread auroral activity, and the big one that occurred on the Sun on Sept 1 1859 and reached Earth 17.6 hours later. It has been speculated that the first CME cleared the way to allow the second one to travel so quickly (CMEs usually take several days to cross the distance between Earth and the Sun) and making its effects even more powerful than if it had happened alone.

So how close can we actually get to the Sun? Not with Parker Solar Probe, but a theoretical distance with known materials.
@KohuGaly
@KohuGaly 6 лет назад
You can actually dip deep into it. What you need is active cooling, that will transport heat from the dipped part to the heat radiators far above the surface. This might sound crazy at first, until you realize the sun is made of gas. The visible surface of the sun is comparably dense to earth's atmosphere. Also you might think that such "tower" can not withstand sun's gravity and would just collapse. However, you can attach active support to it. For example, solar-powered thrusters or cascade of orbital rings. All of which is possible with current technology although above our current budget (however, still within the realm of possibility, given how economy grows and that we may industrialize space). for more info: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0Ap4JhPoPQY.html

Sciolist Dark skin is equal to a SPF of about 4-13 or so. Less likely to get sunburn, but black people still get increased risk of melanoma from the sun, and absolutely should protect themselves from the sun, particularly at noon. Further, the mortality rate amongst black melanoma victims is significantly higher than amongst people with pale skin. Also, melanin gives protection from UVA and UVB, but not much against UVC, so going unprotected anywhere that isn't shielded by ozone is a big no-no, regardless of skintune.

With advanced knowledge of a solar flare event, how protected would a satellites that is powered down be during a Carrington-like event? Similarly, outside of Faraday cages, could personal devices on earth be protected by powerplants temporarily shutting off?
@garethdean6382
@garethdean6382 6 лет назад
It's possible to provide a reasonable amount of protection, especially for satellites which are mostly designed to have a 'safe mode' they can go into for such events. Earth-based systems are far more vulnerable, especially the grid as a whole. 'Turning off' will help but there would still be extensive damage.

How good are the onboard heat radiators? (It also helps if you put really good mirrors on the front. Isaac Arthur has a good video about it.)
@Ricocossa1
@Ricocossa1 6 лет назад
Mirrors yes but I don't think radiators can help. Those work by increasing the contact surface between a hot system and a cold one, thus increasing the flow of heat from the hot system to the cold one. It works wonders to cool off a system that generates its own heat, but putting radiators on the probe, which is colder than the outside, will only increase its temperature.

鋼の無神論者:The Fullmetal Atheist it depends on how big they are. Seeing as we're working with a mass limit for the satellite it probably won't be viable here though.
@TheBackyardChemist
@TheBackyardChemist 6 лет назад
All objects radiate heat away, look up black body radiation. So if you have a large enough radiator in the vacuum of space, and it is in shade, it can be used to remove heat.
@itdoesntworkthatway

鋼の無神論者:The Fullmetal Atheist You can active radiators when you are away from the sun to cool off. And deactivate them when you are close to avoid getting more heat.

A bit off topic, but i'll try - so a black hole question - let's say we have a spaceship capable of moving at the speed of light, and it's orbiting around a black hole (at the speed of light) at the exact orbit where moving at that speed keeps the ship from falling into the black hole, but it cannot escape. Now let's say the ship can stay at that orbit for as long as we want, will it eventually be able to break free because the black hole will shrink due to Hawking radiation? Hope you'll catch this question, thanks for everything :)
@garethdean6382
@garethdean6382 6 лет назад
The distance you're thinking of is known as the 'photon sphere' It's unstable because the slightest change in the hole's mass either pulls objects in or lets them escape. It is 50% larger in radius than the event horizon. If your ship orbited long enough then yes, it would be able to escape as mass is lost. However since most holes are swallowing up CMB radiation the more likely result is the ship quickly falling in as the hole gets heavier.
