Recently, a CCTV footage of a man trying to follow a woman into her home went viral in South Korea. Although South Korea is considered to be one of the safest countries in the world, we wanted to ask ordinary Korean citizens how often these things happen and how safe they feel living in Korea.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Korean population.

Yup that’s why the guy was primarily charged with trespassing(the footage itself is only a circumstantial evidence and because the man didn’t get to actually break into the house, this might have not even been enough to prosecute him). then the police later changed it to attempted rape after they found out there’s more to the footage; the man threatening her to open up the door. Usually the police is not gonna act on it unless there’s something actually happened, which is ridiculous.

Tbh, maybe I am a foreigner, but when I went to Korea twice, I felt so safe there. I even felt safer than my own country. We are both girls and it was past midnight after drinks, there were absolutely no taxi on the street. So, we stopped and asked for help from a random young guy to look for a taxi for us and he was so sweet and kind. He made a call and even stayed with us until the taxi came. He talked to the driver to take us to our hotel. Another thing that I remembered was we were on the subway station looking so confused which way to go and a guy just came to us asking if we needed help. He even warned us to avoid certain areas in Seoul, saying it was not very safe to wonder around there. Generally, there are always criminals everywhere. There is no country that can provide you 100% safety, especially when you are a woman who are more prone to experience bad things since they see us as weak target.

@@wentano There is no reason not to report it. In Korea, a perpetrator can be sent to jail just by stating about the crime at the police station. No other evidence is needed. The last woman is right. There should be more police patrolling around and not relying entirely on CCTV. I'm not saying everywhere. But divert resources with patrol officers where there is a history of those kind of incidences. And the police should host workshops for women on how to prevent or deal with situations where some creep is stalking them. For example, if you think you're being followed late at night, walk into a 24 hour establishment like a convenience store. And if you have a convenience store on your block or street, get to know the owner or workers.
@grape1829

$200 camera replaced every 2 years = $100/year. 1 cop is $40k/year. That's 400 potential cameras per cop, patrols are done in pairs so $80k/year. But that's for an 8 hour shift. For 24 hour surveillance, you need 3 shifts of 2 cops each which is $240k/year. That's equal to 2,400 cameras. I'd take the 2,400 cameras, thanks. And this is just a quick calculation that doesn't account for pensions or the economy's opportunity cost due to these cops eating up taxes as government workers vs. generating economic value for the country in the private sector.

In Australia, at least in Melbourne. We have pairs of police officers stationed at all (if not main) train stations from 6pm till the last train. I was actually stalked during then and I totally forgot there were officers. So when I got off the train the perp left and I quickly reported him but not fast enough for him to be caught :/

That's very subjective. I've seen in Korea they go out of a club at 3 am, pick up a cab and go home safe and sound (in most cases, I know from the video that it can be dangerous too) BUT, in my country, you could never EVER go out of a club at 3 am alone and not be assaulted, robbed, rapped, etc (even by the taxi driver). I live in constant fear of going outside, so, if this doesn't happen in Korea, I'd consider it safe. But, if you live there and this relatively rare situation happens to you, of course you wouldn't consider it safe 🤷🏻‍♀️

But once, I happened to have a really bad haircut, and wanted to hide it, so I borrowed a friends hoodie to cover my head. I walked home at around midnight wearing it and there's this boy walking in front of me. Didn't really put any attention on him until I realized he continuously looked over his shoulders at me, then finally he suddenly started sprinting into the other side of the street. I was a bit shocked, it only dawned on me at that point that he thought I was up to no good. I felt so bad but, a bit humored at the same time. It's been 16 years ago but I thought it was worth sharing cause up until now I don't know why I had to wait for a male friend (same age) to sit first before I do just because I'm a female. It’s sad how so many women live these same experiences everywhere. I had a stalker when I was 20. He saw me at my job at the mall one day and just kept coming back to watch me and stare at me. When he started following me out of the store on my breaks, I tried to lodge an official complaint with mall security, but they said there was nothing they could do. Then one night, he hid in the back of my car and held me at knifepoint- I got away from him and then reported it, but there was no evidence, just my word against his. Ultimately I quit that job and prayed he wouldn’t figure out where I lived and went to university. Thankfully I was lucky, but it’s so upsetting that women can be openly intimidated and terrorized, and the greater response is “Welp 🤷🏼‍♀️”

Me Mehl I am often in Korea alone, daytime and early evening are very safe. Late at night or where there are less people... not so safe ( as with most places). I had one bad experience at an apartment I rented. Someone I didn’t know rang the doorbell ( saw them on iPad type device on apartment wall) and then banged on the door for about 5 minutes. I thought about calling the police but the man left. Fortunately I had asked for the door code to be changed for me, and had locked the door from the inside with a physical lock. So I felt safe, take care of yourself and I hope your visit is not spoiled by this incident. I have found almost all Koreans to be nice, helpful and very honest.

I've been living in korea for six months now and I feel like it's a paradise compared to my country (Chile, south america) when it comes to women safety. That doesn't mean there is not crimes against women. Men will be men everywhere unless they start being raised differently. I can walk here a little drunk after it gets dark while in chile i had 90% chance of getting my things stolen, or being molested or raped. I think the cameras have a lot of influence when it comes to safety in korea. Men think twice before doing anything because of cameras. But if they still do it, it gives to think. Why women are WAY less violent than men? why cases when a woman is the one commiting rape are so less than men? this is worldwide, no country is excluded. That means is not a problem of culture but a problem on how we raise our childs to be determined in their sex and gender. Why lesbian women can avoid catcalling women on the street and men have to even follow us? why do they think they can get away with it(and in most cases they can)? Something radical NEEDS to happen. Women are dying everyday by the hands of their lovers, ex boyfriends or some random guy that got rejected and felt his small ego hurt, women crying in silence while suffering intrafamilial abuse and violence. We have to fight for our rights, go out on the streets, defend ourselves. The answer is not for us women to learn self defense but teach men not grow to be rapists, murderers, violent humans, etc. Learn self defense is a short term help that in most cases you can't use because of the shock. I hope we can all think about all the women suffering in the world when teaching your boy manners, morals, and gender norms if you will.
