United States Marine Raiders, also known as MARSOC, are the United States Marine Corps’ only special operations unit. MARSOC stands for Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, and is home to Marine Raider Critical Skills Operators and Special Operations Officers, as well as its support personnel who are Special Operations Capabilities Specialists (SOCS) and Combat Service Support (CSS).
But what exactly sets Marine Raiders apart from the rest of the Marine Corps? What kind of missions does MARSOC do? How capable are they? And what does one have to go through to become a MARSOC Raider? If you’re interested in learning more about Marine Raiders (MARSOC), watch this video!

I remember back at Pendleton, we were assigned as the insurgents whose sole purpose was to harass our unit. We happened to stumble upon a lone Marine who was sitting on a boulder atop a hill reading a book. So we three insurgents decided we're going to take this marine into our custody. We insurgents discovered this lone Marine was a captain from Recon, who had a team inserted as an observation post all around us. We didn't even see them until they were ordered out of their positions by the captain. Against Recon, we stood no chance.

It was awesome when they finally let them adopt the Raider name, that was a big battle with Headquarters Marine Corps. Much the same misson set as SF, but with the amphibious capability. Like if SF & SEALs had a baby. Awesome video. Still waiting for a video on the finest reconnaissance in force units in the world, Marine Light Armored Reconnaissance (LAR). I'm biased. 🙂
@InitialFailure
@InitialFailure 10 месяцев назад
They're nothing like SF. SF primarily teaches as they aren't commandos but rather build commandos. SEALs are a form of Commando but with significantly more training than MARSOC members. SEALs also have a completely different mission set. MARSOC still struggles to find their mission set as every capability they have is already better served by another elite unit either outside of or within the Marines. How could I possibly know any of this? I was with MARSOC in 2009 Herat, AFG, when they didn't leave the wire for over a month, so I left to continue supporting the Army ODA teams or trident teams elsewhere. I'm not trying to mock or make fun of MARSOC. I am being honest and pointing out that they have almost no reason to exist and have disbanded and reactivated numerous times due to a lack of purpose.
@usmcvet0313
@usmcvet0313 10 месяцев назад
@@InitialFailure '09 is pretty out of date intel brother, and was still in their formative years. They obviously have found their mission set, and it is very similar to SF. Like the video says, USMC only has one SOCOM unit, so they aren't as niche as other branches SOCOM units. Thus they covery a wide birth of capabilities. Foreign internal defense, training, and unconventional warefare being their prime fields puts them right inline with Army SF. Though being Marines, they obviously have amphibious capability mixed in. Thanks for your service.
@InitialFailure
@InitialFailure 10 месяцев назад
@usmcvet0313 Army SF or ARSOF are primarily trainers/teachers. I mean, no disrespect. However, people get this wrong quite a bit; Army Special Forces (The Green Berets) are first and foremost combat advisors. They themselves are not commandos, but rather they make commandos. The closest Army unit that does what you're referring to as a primary (but broadly speaking set of) mission is the Rangers who are not SF but rather are Special Operations. Rangers can do amphibious operations as well, but that's moot as we all know the largest amphibious assault by the U.S. military didn't require Marines anyways (see operation overlord), and amphibious operations weren't used at all during GWOT. Maybe it's my outside view that is the differing issue, but even speaking with Marines (the para legal, some team guys, the Gunny I was attached to) at Herat, the overall consensus was that MARSOC would die out for a lack of purpose. All of the MARSOC fellas I stayed in contact with left MARSOC to enter civilian life or joined other branches SOCOM or SF units. What specific mission can they do that SEALs, Rangers (as well as specialized units/elements within Ranger), Marine infantry (as well as some of the specialized units within conventional Marine Infantry units) can't?

@@InitialFailure They are the Marine Corps SOCOM component. They are forward deployed on MEUs around the world, ready to immeadiatly respond in the area. They are a SOCOM unit that can seamlessly integrate with a MAGTAF. They're not going anywhere, if anything the Marine Corps will expand their numbers. The reason you don't see career Raider operators is because the Marine Corps designed it that way. The Corps was hesitant to field a SOCOM unit in the first place, because they don't want Marines to be outside the Marine Corps chain of command. Now they rotate Marines in & out of MARSOC for 2 reasons: 1) they want the Raiders to take the lessons/training they learn back to the regular units, 2) They want Raiders to be Marines first, SOCOM operators second. SEALs can associate themselves with SOCOM more than they do with the Navy, the same can go with other SOCOM units as well. The Marine Corps does not want this.

You do realize that before MARSOC stood up in 2006. Recon and Force Recon were doing Missions for SOCOM 1987-2006. From 1964-1972 for MACVSOG. From 1980 1987 for JSOC. From 1990-1999 we competed at the national evals against Delta, Devgru Tm 6, FBI HRT, NEST, various Seal tms, various ODA teams. These groups always showed up with better gear, better support and larger numbers. But each time the Recon Platoons (one D/A & one surveillance) won the evals. The personnel grading and monitoring Recon were the Delta and Team 6 guys.

If your trying to figure out the difference between Marine Recon and Marine Raiders I’ll tell you it’s 1 thing, FUNDING. Raiders get better equipment and because of this go on more intense missions. I believe in terms of skill they are near the same but you always get better with better gear and better training so the Raiders very slightly beat out Recon but they are virtually the same.

I think in the near future there will be another restructuring of USSOCOM because of all the overlapping issues. One way will be to merge all tier 1 units into one Special Operations Unit each giving up their own identity to become a new unit. I think USSOC field some of the best units out there, but is becoming somewhat “deep” with units which lead to a lot of redundancy which is both a positive,in terms of having the ability to field and diverse group of units and negative, haveing all of the overlap to the point of not needing as much diversity,especially with these autonomous systems coming online. There is one unit that I would like to see you do a segment on and this unit has been disbanded I believe but it represented a need in the Army that got marginalized for a plethora of reasons but still have battlefield relevance and that unit was/is the Army Long Range Surveillance and Reconnaissance Units

Now many have the resources under their umbrella, but this won’t happen as the mission and task are broad accross the globe and need masters at their respective specialties
@BlueMax717
@BlueMax717 9 месяцев назад
They are absolutely not going to restructure to one unit. More likely scenario is some teams will go away and down sizing will happen. SOF as a whole is massively inflated due to GWOT and has expanded about 300% and budget has increased nearly 800% since GWOT. I can see SEALS and MARSOC both dropping down to about 1500 total in each unit. Rangers drop down to about 2,800. What a lot people down know is DEVGRU is about the same size as normal Seal community. I can see their numbers being reduced by half. They were almost disbanded before 9-11. Delta I can see being reduced by half as well. METL will change again and teams will get a more dialed in mission set again. Just like the old days when budget was tight.

Thank you for the video update and you finally explained the differences in the 4 MSOT teams I’ve never been able to find, so is each team a different platoon? Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta etc, and each team is based on different skills so mountain and dive and jump etc why then do Marine Raiders all learn Combat dive school and Military freefall? Or… is that not the case? I’ll just say this, Force Recon learns ALL of that stuff and can dive and jump and infiltrate and exfiltrate just about anywhere. I was “slightly” disappointed thinking of some of the limitations the individual CSO may be lacking. But, that being said they’re amazing warriors and much more than just “glorified military instructors” that I’ve been calling them for years. I come from a military background and none of us have EVER cared for FID. To me it’s such a bad use of taxpayers dollars, I do not give a shit about those foreign units and their problems and don’t care if their goals and ours lineup. Let them have their own damn training and utilize our special ops better!!!!! 😂

This is not meant as a critic of the US military, but am genuinely curious. As an outsider it seems like there a exceptionally many SF units in the US military. As mentioned, it is almost an anomaly, or point worth mentioning at least, that the marines only have one SF unit. I’m not saying there are too many SF soldiers, but the host of units seems un-necessary. Is it unit pride and lobbying that prevents amalgamtions? Or skillsets - because watching uploads here there sure seems to be more than a fair bit of overlap there. Or is it necessary for other reasons? As I said, not a criticism, but just curious. My admittedly small country has 2 SF units, navy and army

Every S.O. unit has skill sets the other units don't. That's why it's like a marching band, one can play drums super well because he played it way more than the others. The others can play their instrument as well but not as great
@BlossomField91
@BlossomField91 6 месяцев назад
Honestly, it's because of service politics and bureacracy. It's the same reason why there are redundant federal agencies in the US government and nearly every one of them has their own SWAT team. If it were strictly due to military need, the only units in SOCOM would be USASOC units, e.g. 75th Ranger Regiment, Special Forces, Delta Force, and NSW units like the Navy SEALs actually sticking to their bread and butter (naval/amphibious SOF) instead of overreaching and doing what the Rangers and Delta do. Basically what they were doing pre 9/11. The reason the Navy SEALs have become the well known 'sexy' unit is no small part thanks to the Navy Dept investing a ton into PR because they've been great for Navy recruitment. Most SEAL wannabes wash out of BUD/S and can be sent to fill other roles that the Navy has a harder time filling. And politicking in SOCOM itself (nope, it's not a coincidence that the SEALs/DEVGRU got the Bin Laden mission). There is no need whatsoever for MARSOC or AFSOC. They do nothing that USASOC and NSW shouldn't be handling. There is also no need for DEVGRU or whatever they call themselves now when Delta exists. That was the whole point in creating Delta Force. To be the American version of the British SAS. If there's a greater manpower need, it makes more sense to expand these units (activate another Ranger battalion, SF Group, or whatever - then deactivate them when that manpower is no longer needed) and open recruitment to the entire US military. Allow Marines to attend RASP or SFAS or BUD/S, etc.

From what I understand Force Recon Marines and Marine Raiders are nearly identical in skill and ability, the difference is just who they answer to. Force Recon answers to the MAGTF while Raiders answer to USSOCOM, all that really means is Raiders will handle legit military special operations in support of the US military/government, meanwhile Force Recon pretty much do the same just specifically for the MAGTF Commander. FORECON will answer to the specific MAGTF General and Raiders will answer to the regional SOCOM Commander.

They're both pretty much on par. In order to be a Force Recon, 1 must have served for some time in a regular company in Recon Battalions first, before being chosen to serve in a Force Recon company (also within the Recon Battalions). Force Recons answer to the Marine Corps directly, while Marine Raiders answer to SOCOM. Though Force Recons are not under SOCOM, they're still highly capable in many aspects; in fact they can do almost all of Navy SEAL missions such as direct action, maritime interdiction, VBSS, amphibious recon, hydrographic recon, special recon, maritime raid, vessel sabotage, harbor sabotage, underwater demolition. Force Recons used to be capable of unconventional warfare as well if not mistaken, but ever since Marine Raiders were created, this mission set along with few others, the Force Recons ceded them and instead they refocused back on intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. ISR has always been the primary mission of Force Recons, to gather intelligence for the MAGTF (basically be their eyes and ears) very deep behind enemy lines.
