This is one of those subjects that it feels a bit strange to "Like". What I really like is the presentation of the subject and the additions of context and information. Always interesting!
Had the same feelings, but I try to detach from judgement if I'm not sure about something. There were many good people there, but the system was wrong.
Another great informative video, I really enjoy watching them. Was just wondering if you knew of any new documentaries on Chernobyl. I’ve seen several but was hoping maybe any new ones has come out. Anyways keep up the great work 🤘🏼❤️
There were many in English, but most of them quoted other ones (in Russian / Ukrainian) or the documents that were released in the 90s / 00s. I'll look up some links - can't promise, but maybe will find something interesting in English :-)
It would be superb to see a video detailing what happened with units 1 to 3 at the plant in the aftermath of the disaster in order to keep them in operation. I can't find clear details of this elsewhere, other than brief mention of the operators of reactor 3 donning masks and taking iodine in order to stay at the controls.
Sunday evening has rolled around, time to get the tea out again^^ This series is quickly becoming one of my favourites. The great attention to detail going with each of the people involved brings so much depth to the story. I can only imagine what this Soviet official must have thought when receiving this most dreaded of phonecalls. The unthinkable had happened. The RBMK, the indestructable work horse that could not explode, had done just that. They might as well have told him that water does indeed flow uphill, or we can wish away gravity if we so desire. And you're so right. Hindsight is 20-20, as they say. But at some point, even the most steadfast Soviet burocrat must have had second thoughts about certain things. Or had they?
They had second thoughts often... but that's the problem. A single person can have questions, but the collective doesn't. Add a corrupted mind into the equasion and you basically get the Soviet Union. If your leader said 2+2=5, it didn’t matter if there was 4 around. He said 5 and you had to agree. If you didn’t, you had to be damn sure you got a fortified background so you wouldn’t vanish misteriously.
@@Chernobylite That is very true. If the Party told you that 2+2 equals 5, you better start believing it. It must have been mentally and spiritually exhausting for people to live in such a system. Very "1984"-esque. And that even top scientists couldn't escape this nonsense. What a terrible waste of their brilliant minds. They should have explained to poor Unit 4 that despite the crappy way they built and ran it, it should not, no, could not explode because the Party says so. However, a reactor doesn't understand your warped political system, it only understands physics and how to respond to these physics when presented to it. And if you give it crappy physics, well... PS: There's a new, very hefty addition to the library I created for you guys. Happy reading^^
I often wish there was a word for this kind of situation, because it serves as my greatest fascination with the USSR more often than not, but it’s extremely unlikely they would even acknowledge, much less commandeer a word for it. There’s just something so interesting to me the system of unrealistic expectations, leading to falsified reports up each level of the chain to the top leading to such catastrophic misunderstandings and miscalculations. From the outside looking in, and with hindsight it’s something really incredible to observe.
I think it's not exactly the problem of exaggeration, but rather the issue of Soviet leaders wishing for the best. It's not like they didn’t knew the odds, they just assumed It's better to work even against the chances.
I really want a video on what the fire brigade did, especially right before the accident and once they got immediately on scene. I heard they were extremely busy the night of the incident and were exhausted when they got the alarm but still responded. Also what did the security guards do???
@@Chernobylite awesome!!! Also I hope on the people that were actually at the control room in numbers three and four and maybe the medical staff at prypiat hospital???
I read in an early 1950,a little red cloth bound edition on nuclear energy that if a nuclear pile is left to run away, it will explode with the force of tnt, to lift the reactor vessels 2,000 ton lid breaking all the bolts that it should rest on its side balanced would require huge force's, a hydrogen explosion could be a reasion but the reactor fuel rods and graphite moderator would remain in place possibly, if it was a nuclear explosion this might account for the huge force's that destroyed the reactor as the little book indicates ?.
Is the red forest safeish now? I know it soaked up a lot of radiation and there would still be fuel left over but did the trees soak up enough that you could go in there. What year was it you were there? Was the new safe confinement building already in place?
Parts of it - all Zone is fairly safe, but there are dangerous spots scattered throughout all this area. Last time we were there in 2022, after the war broke out, we gathered and delivered different supplies for people there.
Well, the corruption in the video means a broader spectrum of negative processess (including decomposition of the state) rather than just literal corruption :-)
@@Chernobylite wonderful!! Thank you so much for all the work you do for the videos. I've watched almost all of them, only missing a few of your older ones. You have taught me so much. You are a natural teacher.
If you wonder what could the have done more, answer is they did exactly what any other country could do. A lot of people say USSR had mobilized a lot more resources than any Western country could.@@Chernobylite
They could not evacuate Pripyat two days earlier they did. Because the city, using 1200 buses, was evacuated 39 hours after the explosion. 26.04 1:23 - explosion 27.04 13:10 - radio announcement about evacuation. Buses and trucks come into the city. 27.04 17:00 - evacuation completed
We have a series of HBO vs reality which covers a few people / subjects each - you can watch them. We don't have all the episodes published yet, though :-) Here's the playlist: ru-vid.com/group/PLvLmuX4fgBCftvzcMYIbpBGzYiTyPZ4Gn
