They used to work together, Casey showed Matt how to use the kinetic ropes actually, but they had some sort of falling out. If you watched the channel back when Randy was a camera man, randy and Casey are good friends

The final explanation is interesting. Because it means conditions changed so much in one day that at first a stock tesla could drive over them, and at the end a very capable FJ could not.

Dont underestimate Tesla's 4wd. It's one of the best road 4wd, better even than a subaru. Only ground clearance and weight are it's disadvantage in such conditions

@@darekmistrz4364 just because something is awd doesn’t mean it’s good offroad. Street tires, heavy, no ground clearance all all big big factors. No one said it had a bad drive system.

@@Lukaslevanen1435 actually my model Y does better in slippery conditions than my Land Rover Defender, when both cars are on good winter tires. Only when snow height is 15 inches or more the Defender wins due to more ground clearance.

6:35: Those wires are so you can open the front trunk in case the 12v battery dies. And yeah, once you get it open you can actually jump start it! The 12v is under a plastic panel you pop off in the front trunk. You can hook up a jump starter to that 12v battery which will open the high voltage contactor and get everything going.

@@Eyes0penNoFear It's actually a thing though! The high voltage system is for the motors only - everything else, including the relays to that, is done by a regular 12V system with a regular car battery. If that battery dies with the relays closed, you do actually have to jump start it. Interestingly, towing one is a very fast way to charge it, in a pinch, due to the regenerative braking function.

I believe that’s only in the older model S, not in the newer teslas. I believe they ditched the normal 12v batteries.

Matt, Your team needs to add a grab rail or two to your snowcat. There isn’t much of a place for a step and I worry about your taking another serious tumble off of those treads. You can attach a home made or commercially available grab rail (like we use on boats) to help climb up or down safely. Love your channel!!

I live in Jackson Hole Wyoming where it snows all winter. In the last 45 years all of my 4 wheel drive pickups carry 4 count em 4 sets of tire chains with snubbers or tighteners. For safety's sake and being able to maneuver in the snow covered mountains without slipping into a ravine you guys need to pack tire chains. Best Regards and I enjoy watching.

Say what you will, but that Tesla got further up the mountain on street tires than the FJ did on off road tires. There are going to be some crazy capable off road electric vehicles in the near future.

@@78katz Yep. A great combination would be the ground clearance of the FJ with the Tesla AWD system. It's called a Cybertruck but it's still a year out before they start cranking them out.

Chains are a thing, though you wouldn’t know it from these videos as they’re rarely if ever uses. Chains make a heck of a difference especially when paired with locking diffs; I’ve plowed snow with my 4Runner going up a 45° hill which had ice under the snow. With all 4 tires chained I haven’t found an unplowed road or trail where it won’t go, though I rarely chain the fronts as it isn’t recommended by Toyota but with low clearance chains I’ve never had an issue, all the same it needs to be really bad for me to chain them up. I’ve used studed snow tires in the past but nothing compares to snow tires and chains, though studs are much nicer on prepared/paved roads as you can travel at speed, chains are capped to 30 MPH and loud; but as chains are removable and studs aren’t once you pull them off you’re in for a much nicer ride.

@@buffalokrisgoldprospecting: I had a department vehicle a front wheel drive car, an impala, with decent traction control and which would get studed snow tires every year; that vehicle went places I wouldn’t even have tried to go with my 4Runner, sometimes you just have to go certain places. Never got stuck due to traction overheating issues; it was older and while the mileage was low the operating hours was high; you’d be surprised at just how long you can run a vehicle without traveling very far.

Hey Matt I think that you should definitely build some awesome steps for the side of the cage on the back of the snow cat!! So that it would help the guys be able to get up and in the cage so that they can ride up there and do some filming also!! Just an idea Matt plus I think it might also look good also!!!

It's interesting that Logan, the towing guy, drove himself back into the ditch on the left. Would he have gotten back on the dry quicker if he had steered opposite, the front end might have gone right while Matt pulled the back right? Both Matt and Casey from Cascade use this technique.

The previous winter I took my grandson up for his first four wheeling in the high mountain snow in my Tracker . On the second road I was familiar with from adventure riding and knew it was rough , rutted and full of skid plate hitting rocks . As we started up it I saw some street looking tread patterns in the snow and thought maybe a full size pickup . About a half mile up after utilizing my skid plates on the rocks you could not see we encountered a car coming down . I drove off the road to let it by and it was a Tesla . My grandson and I looked at each other " WTF?" . As we continued up we saw where it turned around and if it had gone another 75' we would have been winching it out or repelling down the hillside to check for survivors . The underside must have been beat to pieces .

When I worked in Mongolia, I was amazed to see so many people engage in serious off-roading with the most common car there. The Toyota Prius. Mostly because there aren't very many roads. So, they are quite good at it. Of course, everyone gets stuck from time to time. But, they will almost always self-rescue. Occasionally, some help will be provided by someone passing by with another vehicle, a horse or in extreme cases a camel. They can really pull.

@@TheBandit7613 100x this, it is literally just a 4Runner in gaudy colors, with twice the plastic and half the visibility. Which is exactly why it sold horribly. It's like calling the Bronco Sport a Bronco. It's just a different looking Escape with a Bronco badge.

I'm pretty sure that even most off road tires are pretty bad on snow. For snow you need proper snow tires or chains. AT tires with a 4wd truck won't get you very far- I have learnt that from this channel
