The Camo Matrix Podcast Episode 2 - I discuss the color spectrum and visual clarity for deer vision and how I will modify my the Camo Showdown videos and the Camo matrix tool to more accurately represent deer vision. These color and clarity changes are based on a deer vision study that set out to understand what color wave lengths deer can see and was discussed by Dr. Bradley Cohen on the Wired to Hunt Podcast episode 543.

I also noticed/feel that the shine of the material can make a difference. Wool and some fleece do not reflect sunlight like most nylon based clothes.

Yes, The "plastic" type material has a reflective quality that may reflect all that UV light and make you glow or have an aura around you that deer may pick up.

I listened to that Podcast and thought of your channel. Good on you for adapting and making the 20/100 and blue yellow changes to your matrix. Before that podcast I always thought deer vision was 20/40. Although we don’t know what they see, your new videos may give us the closet and best representation of how deer see us. Thanks!

I am working on the changes and hope to have a new version out soon. Thanks so much for watching!

Being retired Navy and had the Blue camo I went hunting with it on. I had washed in normal laundry detergent. I was sitting in a old wooden platform and with rifle pointing left two does walked up on my right as I turned and looked in that direction. They stood there staring at me for close to 30 minutes and was in heavy woods with little sun. Later I changed to new Marine desert camo for hunting and deer would walk by just 10 yards. Walmart had hunter Orange camo sweats I would wear over my hunting clothes treated with U-V killer I wore during day before season started and a Doe and button buck walked all the way across a 100 yard field an to within 10 feet eating grass around me for an hour, I did not move. The next day I wore camo new from Mossy Oaks from West Point Ms. store again the same two got only to 50 yards and bellowed that Doe scream you never forget and ran in a sideways direction. proof they see camo very well. As far a cover scent just hang clothes over a smoking fire for a while, like apple or cherry deer smell smoke all the time from farm houses!!!

Thanks for that! In addition to a new version of deer vision, I am conjuring up some ideas on how I can give a point of view representation of what deer see based on some real interaction I have had while in a treestand and on the ground and experiment with some different cover.

Thank you this was very informative. Hard to believe their vision is that bad but like you said if your someone who has never worn corrective lenses and then try a pair on its like 😳. You never even knew and you just adapted.

I remember about 25 years ago a university from one of the northern states issued a paper on how different animals see. They did a great deal in investigation into deer and moose. I tried my best to fine this paper on line but failed (sorry). From what I remember for deer, they agreed with your information that deer do see colours in the blue and yellow spectrums. But they went into a fairly in depth study of the receptors in the eye. They claimed that In the deer they are very concentrated along the horizontal plane. This would give different clarity based on horizontal compared to vertical. If I remember correctly it said that on the horizontal plane the receptors are approximately 2 time denser then a human eye while only about 1/3 as dense as a human on the vertical. So the conclusion of the paper was that deer can actually see "better" then humans on the horizontal while not very well at all for the vertical plane. They also stated that this would stand to reason as deer evolved looking for danger moving through the bush with very little attention needed for danger from above. An example of this, you can peek over something and the deer will usually not notice but if you move sideways even a little bit, they will pick you put right away. I have tried this and it is true. Given this information I am not sure that blurring the view for deer vision would be correct?

I know what you are talking about and that makes sense and would alter how I portray the deer vision, which is still a work in progress. I can confirm that Dr. Cohen has agreed take a look at my color spectrums and blur simulations. He is busy and takes some time to get back to me so it still may be a while. I will see what his thoughts are on improving clarity on the horizontal plane and blurring it vertically. I appreciate all constructive criticism comments and will always try to improve. Thanks for watching and being part of the process to "attempt" to achieve an accurate simulated deer vision.

I've heard they are sensitive to the UV spectrum. I'd be interested to see if whether things like sunscreen (which look pitch black in the UV spectrum from some experiments) would be a trigger for them in certain settings... since vision is just absorbed wavelengths versus reflected wavelengths. That's an oversimplification but it's still a fascinating conundrum
@CamoMatrix
@CamoMatrix Год назад
I would be very interested in this! Will research this. If that is the case, would face sunscreen replace black paint?
@davisstellman
@davisstellman Год назад
@@CamoMatrix I have no idea, it's harder to say when they have UV spectrum and light spectrum cones, they may not even look black to them at that point. Would be neat if they ran an experiment on it

It is said by a study by rose lake wildlife Station in lower Michigan that deer can see red and orange better than any other colors please help me determine this because everyone else is saying they cannot see these colors but thier is actual research saying otherwise
@CamoMatrix
@CamoMatrix 4 месяца назад
Can you reference any of the research that says they can see red and orange better? Most research points to blue and ultraviolet as their strongest color reception (which is why they see so well at dawn and dusk. I based my deer vision off of a study done by the University of Georgia and Tennessee where they used classic conditioning practices to train deer to go to feeding trough with a light on vs one with the light off. They then changed the colors of the lights to see if the deer would go to the light. if the light was in the color range they could not see, they did not know where the food was. They can also dissect their eyes and examine they rods and cones in their eyes to determine the color spectrum that is being picked up.
