Our Super Dwarf Lives in a Tree

Our baby Super Dwarf Reticulated Python from ‪@ReachOutReptiles‬ has decided he prefers to stay in one of the synthetic snake trees we use for exercise and enrichment instead of returning to his baby enclosure. Ryder was hatched on September 13, 2021 and I can already see that finding him just the right adult enclosure is going to be challenging in the sense that he has specific preferences that we will have to try and accommodate or he won't want to stay in his enclosure. He is very content in the tree so we will have to find something large enough for us to put this or a similar tree in for him. Just like TC, Ryder is a great family pet so far. He is very personable, friendly as snakes go, easy to manage and will eat anything. He is a decent learner, doing well with his target training. Ryder is fortunate that I work from home and that someone is always here so he can be free as much as possible. TC was hatched on 6/6/2019, he is 3 years old in this video, 4.5 feet long and 620 grams.
I narrated the whole video so it is self-explanatory with Ryder living in the activity tree for the past couple of weeks and TC in shed.

I love that Ryder chose to live in the tree, and you were able to accommodate him

I love your videos. You've really inspired me to step up my game in regards to enrichment. I have plans for an activity stand/tree for my snake room/office for the ones used to coming out and perhaps a zippered playpen for them to explore in.

So interesting to see your snakes, especially the retics. Could you do a video sometime concerning your housekeeping duties when a snake goes to the bathroom outside of its enclosure and also address the issue of snake mites if you have any experience with that. Mites in your complex enclosures and snake room would have to be a nightmare. Thank you! Thoroughly enjoy your videos.

Thank you. I’ve never had a snake with mites so we have never had to deal with that here. I’d one of the snakes used the bathroom while out we just pick it up and clean the area with Rescue wipes or a similar cleaning product.

You are a wealth of practical information about actual topics that people who like to provide large, enriching enclosures run into. Also, I think Ryder might have figured out you are a pushover. LOL . Also, I read that snakes do scent mark, even if we can't always smell it. Is it possible that TC is actually just marking everything as his? Seriously tho, Ryder has got to be the happiest of snakes, if he ever has to be conventionally confined to an enclosure, he'll be so depressed. What a happy life he and the other snakes have with you!

Thank you! I have seen some male snakes scent mark. I have not seen TC do it but it’s possible.

You and your snakes are such an inspiration to me. I would love to allow free roaming for my 3 snakes and some of my larger lizards but with dogs and kids and an apartment that’s got a lot of non-snake-friendly areas it’s just not an option for me right now. I do have a fully enclosed playpen I’m working on setting up for my reptiles, but I was curious if it would cause problems if I used it for multiple reptiles (at separate times of course) or if there was a way to de-scent it between each reptile? I don’t want to cause any negative stress or over excitement in any of my pets. That netted enclosure for around Ryder’s Tree is an absolute genius idea btw. I’m definitely going to have to look into getting one so I can make my own snake perch/exercise area that’ll be safe for my guys. Thank you for sharing this. I’m feeling very inspired and want to get creating snake things asap. Thank you again for all the help, advice, tips and videos. I very much appreciate it and you. ☺️💕

If it's any help, I have a couple of the screen pet playpens that I use for my snakes. I use the enclosures for more than one snake (not out at the same time) and I've never had any issues with this causing stress. Sometimes they seem interested in checking out the different scents, but based on body language this is clearly just curiosity. My only caveat is that I do this with a group of snakes I've had for a few years, all of which have been tested for Nidovirus and the virus that causes IBD. I wouldn't share enclosures/furnishings between new snakes that haven't completed quarantine or had their wellness checks.

I use my 5’ cloth playpen for both my rat snake and kingsnake (at separate times of course). They both love to roam and utilize the different enrichment items I throw in there. I assume since kingsnakes are reptile-eaters mine gets a kick out of other snake scents. I haven’t encountered a problem with either of them but when I do need to clean something in there I use diluted chlorhexidine :)

@@Shades1535 Thank you so much for sharing! This helps put my mind at ease. I have 2 royals and a young Kingsnake and he’s the one that I was most concerned about getting overexcited by other snake and lizard smells. My research says they’re a bit “food happy” lol so I didn’t want him constantly getting amped up when getting exercise and then maybe get nippy and/or strikey with me when trying to put him back in his enclosure.

@@caitwn8548 Thank you for sharing and the help! I’ve only had snakes since March of this year and 2 of them I’ve had for only a couple weeks so they’ve not been tested for anything yet. I didn’t think about them possibly passing something like that to one another if any of them have anything like that going on so thank you for bringing that to my attention as well. I appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences with me. ☺️👍🏻

@@kerseykrewzoo Your very welcome! My kingsnake is a year old, loves to eat and she often rattles while she eats but she’s never struck at me :) I think it all comes down to individual and how we care for them 😁 It might even be enriching for them to smell other snakes.

SD Retics are just beautiful! I was in touch with Reachout a few weeks ago because I wanted to buy a SD from him because that’s where Bob got his from. Because I live in stupid Florida, I can’t have one. So disappointing!

Would you every do an enclosure/enrichment guide or build? How do you attach those PVC pipes to the inside of the tanks? Is it 3M or something else?

Do you have any videos about using reptilinks as feeders? I've heard mixed things about them what do you think of them? I live in Alaska where it's sometimes hard to find feeders so that's why I'm interested

If your snake likes them, they seem good. My royals aren't interested, but my children's python likes the quail mini links as much as the rest of the stuff I feed him (he gets quail chicks and hopper mice too). The monitor lizard got the ones the royals didn't want.
