This had me thinking of my mother and her dentures. Glad for her sake that irritants under her dentures didn't create pearls. I could imagine the growth of a pearl in that location would be more irritating than the particle itself. Makes me feel bad for the oysters. I wish I had this thought while she was still living. It could have been a fun conversation. :) She was a really intelligent lady. - Heidi

@CybeargPlays
@CybeargPlays 10 лет назад
That explains where pearls come from, but WHY do they form? I'd think that surrounding a little irritant with layer upon layer until it's a huge ball would create a much bigger irritant, or are oysters able to expel the pearl somehow?

think of it as similar to wrapping a shard of broken glass with layers of cloth. it gets bigger, yes, but it also becomes less dangerous.

Normally are pearls dispelled by the oyster? It seems odd that if it's a method of protection that the oyster would rather have a huge pearl blocking it's insides forever! But I've never heard of scouring the floor of oyster beds for pearls either.

I found a lobster pearl at work. I did some research and they don't normally make pearls because crustaceans shed their shells often, and also because it's not as easy for junk to get in under the shell as it is for mollusks. My best guess is that it was a genetic shell deformation, or perhaps an injury that grew strangely into a teardrop like shape, broke off, and then became rounded. But I'm not sure... What can you tell me about lobster pearls SciShow?

In the mississippi they are making pearls that are manmade but they are pink, lavender, and blue by altering the oyster's food. Old natural pearls like old mikimoto pearls can be worth a fortune. I saw one 30 inch strand worth 235,000 dollars, that would be a christmas present!

Stephen Horton you can choose when you upload the video. it can go live immediately, or it can stay hidden for everyone except you, or it does not go live but you can embed it and can share a link that allows people to watch it. the third option is the key. you upload it, you get a link, everyone who has the link can watch it. and later you can make the video go live.

How do oysters produce offspring? Like is there just magically a baby oyster? And how does it get its shell?
@heytrey5558
@heytrey5558 9 лет назад
HouseMDaddict I'm sure you have already discovered the answer, but there are a few videos on RU-vid as well. To channel my inner Lil' Jon, the female oyster "skeets" its eggs into the water column near a male oyster who "skeets" his sperm into the mix. The sperm and egg combine, and over the course of about 3 months the new baby oyster is floating about in the current until it becomes big enough to swim down and attach itself to a hard surface. It stays there, feeding, and growing for about 2-3 years where it becomes an adult and the cycle of skeet continues. #TheMoreYouKnow

Why do onions make us cry
@KatelynShacklock
@KatelynShacklock 10 лет назад
There are many sulfur compounds in the cells of onions, and when you cut them up the gases get released and make contact with your eyes. When this happens the gases (with sulfur specifically because they're the ones that hurt) and the tears react and form sulfuric acid which is a very strong and painful acid. You crying is a reaction to the irritant and an attempt at flushing it away. That's what all tears are for actually; getting rid of irritants.
@seigeengine
@seigeengine 10 лет назад
Katelyn Shacklock Great. So if the purpose of all tears is resolving irritation, why do people cry for emotional reasons? Hmm?
@someguysomeguy5874
@someguysomeguy5874 10 лет назад
SHREK
@KatelynShacklock
@KatelynShacklock 10 лет назад
seigeengine I wanna say they're different tears... Like the chemical composition of emotional tears is different from that of the ones that are washing irritants out. So presumably the reason for emotional tears is different since I would guess production is different. But I'm not sure where I learned that. I could be wrong. Potentially they are the same, but one is an involuntary reaction like breathing and the other is a voluntary reaction like moving. I'm gonna have to look into this now. I'm curious if I'm just making stuff up now :)

Speaking of round things in gonads, I've been reading a lot of books about history. One of which meantioned a culture (Can't remember which), where when men get a certain age they have their foreskin cut open, then have some beads inserted to make it look kind of like a cluster of grapes. Not only that, but the little beads have a small grain of sand inside them, so when they walk, you hear a little 'tinkling'. This supposedly sounded very enchanting or musical, but I think it had more to do with the fact that usually only rich men got this operation. So if a woman hears it, they know there's a very wealthy man nearby. The book I'm reading is focusing on China in 1421 or so, as well as their trading and travels, however this tradition is based elsewhere I think. Mysore or something like that. Pretty sure somewhere in India. Just thought I'd share this... weird bit of history.

Are viruses alive?
@RyanMathewHarding
@RyanMathewHarding 10 лет назад
We don't really know. Our definition of life isn't really all that specific, so it's hard to know when it comes to things like viruses. They're effectively inanimate objects that can reproduce. They don't move or eat or anything, they just float around until they find a cell to inject their DNA into. The cell then creates more viruses that repeat the cycle. It's more like a computer virus than a living creature, which makes it hard to say.

Well oysters have about as much consciousness as a houseplant. It's no more inhumane than a bonsai tree in my opinion.

Bob Jones GCS Oh don't go arguing what's inhumane and what's not. We're humans! We have developed on a path that is not in sync with nature and we're too far in to turn back. Inhumane means are inevitable. Don't like it? Pick a goal and help us work towards it instead of wasting your breath on the internet... yes, I know that's exactly what I just did >.

I'd say that on average, around 10% of the population of a species is homosexual. Proof that it's perfectly natural to be attracted to the same sex, despite what some political conservatives say.
@Gold_Tail
@Gold_Tail 10 лет назад
Quick answer, not all animals do only have sex with the opposite gender, though if they only did it would be logical why that would happen evolution wise (reproduction and stuff) if you actually watch the vlogbrothers giraffe sex video, you'll find out that a lot of animals do have sex with those of the same sex

@jamief415
@jamief415 10 лет назад
TheShepard256 Firstly, 10% of the population is what the LGBT community would like you to believe, but in reality, its more like 1-2% (for humans). Having said that, 90% of giraffe sex is male on male, and only 9% of it is male on female intercourse.

Idea: Snowflakes. Before I moved somewhere where it snowed, I had always thought that the cartoon depictions of snowflakes as unique and composed of intricate designs was just that, a cartoon depiction (similar to the popularized depiction of a heart as opposed to the anatomical version of it). Now I know that snowflakes really are made up of intricate designs, but I want to know more!
