How Do They " Grade " Blue Neocaridina Shrimp? It is Unlike Cherry Shrimp. Blue Dreams, Velvets. zhangjiajiensis
Are you wondering what a fair price for blue dream shrimp is? what is the street price for a nice blue dream? how about grading a blue dream neocaridina? is it similar to cherry red Neocaridina lines? ( Sakura, red line, painted fire, fire, cherry?).
It's unlike green jade, sakura yellow, orange rilis or golden line shrimp. Blue shrimp occur from 3 different wild lines. Davidii, Palmata and xangaghensis shrimp to produce a wild range of names that are often misused and sold as low grade shrimp. In this video we will go over the genetic and commercial history of the shrimp, as well as the odd issue of why we dont see a range of prices in the blue neocaridina be it...
Jelly, Blue Dream, Blue Pearl, Blue Velvet, Blue Rili, Blue Sapphire, Blue Carbons or Blue Cherry haha.

Yesss the whole blue naming thing has me going nuts! For a time I had a sort of blue dream colony that mixed with some rilis, I ended up with red/blue body rili, blue jelly, velvet throws... I just call them low grade culls. it’s a long process getting the colony back to a nice grade blue dream. It’s funny because I think the grade of blue shrimps where I live (Australia) has become so variable as more people started to keep them but didn’t maintain their lines well. I like the substrate philosophy you have. I do the same despite being told to do otherwise- like honestly I think you could breed shrimp to potentially look good on any substrate through this. Exposing flaws in your shrimp makes it easier to hone in on the selective breeding.

Hi, mate where in Australia do you get your shrimp from?
@SansVertigo
@SansVertigo 3 года назад
@@urbansk8r231 Direct from breeders! You'll find the most reputable ones in Australian shrimp keeping groups on Facebook, or on AustralianShrimpTrader, and there's a handful of boutique stores like mine, microaquatics, abquatics and more that have popped up online. Be wary of Gumtree, it can be hit or miss with quality. Some people take photos off google for it. Generally higher quality lineages will cost more, ask for videos and photos if there aren't enough from the seller.

what does the chart in the video mean with those arrows? if i put fire red together with blue jelly, what colour shrimps am i going to get? sorry im new to shrimps keeping.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 года назад
Youll likely get a wild looking shrimp...clear and rusty brown...maybe some red babies and maybe some blue babies also. The chart is how selective breeding occurred to create a given color. So wild to spotted red wild to red ...to bright red. .then orange, then randomly a mutation happened and yellow appeared...however, if you try and mix colors like you would paints, usually it leads to the shrimp just going back up the chart, opposite of the arrows.

Hello there I was wondering in your opinion if one was to breed for blue jelly shrimp which shrimp is best to use red rili, blue rili, or carbon/carbon blue rili?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 29 дней назад
From what I see locally in the USA I think the blue rili would be easiest to keep selecting for more of that clearer light blue, however red rili is where the blue jelly morphs first came from, so it can occur on both lines. Now the black rili are a bloody Mary/shoko chocolate line originally, but many do have underlying blue genes, it's just hard to get the black and red out of them. So yes, I'd use blue rili and red rili...perhaps even crossing the two
@650RepzOFC
@650RepzOFC 29 дней назад
@@Fishtory I was thinking the same thing actually but I just wanted to check before I invested in them as I do find the luck of the draw and long game to be half the fun so I might combine the red and blue rili and have fun to see what happens. I’m new to the hobby so all of the genetics I find very fascinating memorizing how to make what on the other hand is rather tough I think well for me it is 🤣. The blue Jellies are probably my favorites though other than some of the tiger combinations I’ve seen. Thank you for reaching out I truly appreciate it.

I'm getting some neocaridinas for a 14 liter aquarium. Haow many should I buy?? Can I have them with neon tetras?? Any help would be much appreciated
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 лет назад
yes you could have neon tetras but they will eat all the babies. I would suggest buying a snail (nerite that's pretty and has a cool pattern for eating the hard algae, then 1 otocinctlus fish to each softer algae .... then get 8 or more shrimp of your choice in color. I find neocaridina, by far the best choice for ease of care and they are really beautiful.) As for other fish, if you must add some fish to this small tank, as I said, I'd add an otocinctlus (they will not eat shrimp, and will clean, same with nerite snails, but unlike other snails, they have wicked patterns on them and do not breed and then over run your tank hahah.) I think youd be happier with 5 or 6 chili rasboras, Phoenix rasboras, celestial pearl danios, goldring aka tinwini danios, ember tetras, or a few clown killifish.... none of these should end up eating more than a few or the baby shrimp if you want them to reproduce , and they all have low bio loads for the tank to stay clean longer. neon tetras actually can get to 1.5 or 2 inches and 2x as wide as the other fish I mentioned...plus they like to school but only do so, when they have room to swim laps and weave around. I recomend lots of tiny plant cover or making some rock piles with enough room or holes in the rock pile or using holey aquascaping stones /lava rock. so the shrimp can relax and hide also. if you look at aquaticarts.com and use the code SECRETHISTORY15 you will get a nice discount and could win a few hundred dollars in gift cards when using the code or mentioning my channel. here. I get most my shrimp, plants and awesome snails / nano fish from them
@MrElm0O
@MrElm0O 5 лет назад
@@FishtoryThanks for responding man, I really appreciate it. Some other questions come to mind. Will the ottocinclus and the shrimp compete for food?? They both eat algae right (as you can tell I know almost nothing about this, brand new to the hobby). Do shrimp need a heater? I live in Mexico city and is not the coldest place, but it can get chilli in winter, temperatures drop to around 2-5 C daily.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 лет назад
@@MrElm0O they do compete for food a little, but not too much, theyll both eat any fish flake food also if you feed fish. As for temperature, they are generally kept at 20 to 26 Celsius, but if you have a heated house around 20 Celsius they would do fine probably without one. most people who want to truly breed shrimp will keep them without any fish...and perhaps with a nerite snail. However I also keep mine with Malaysian trumpet snails or ramshorn snails sometimes...and they compete for food a bit, but shrimp wont eat the hard algae on surfaces usually, they like softer algae, and plankton, fish poop or decaying plant matter first and foremost, where as snails also eat those things, but eat non-hair algae and diatomaceous algae

Does it matter what color your substrate is? Or does it affect or change anything in their color? When having blue dream shrimp.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 года назад
Yes quite a bit. Dark substrate gives a more navy blue color and light or white/gray/tan substrate will cause them to be clearer and more sky blue or crystal blue
@poseidon00709
@poseidon00709 4 года назад
The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium does it affect in the future generations in anyway?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 года назад
@@poseidon00709 no its a 3 month process max (in fact stress or surroundings can change the color tone or opacity within 30 to 60 seconds...by 3 weeks they usually settle on the color they will be (and retailers/online photographers seem to know this...you can make a crappy cherry or blue dream shrimp, look really vivid with dark substrate and a bit of boosted contrast.) ... as i said though...after a molt- they will settle into their color scheme (sometimes little faint stripes or rili patterns even show up...so i use a strong LED or phone flash LED at night to examine the color consistency and legs/feelers (because having fully colored legs and feelers is the true test of a quality line).
@poseidon00709
@poseidon00709 4 года назад
The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium Well that was really helpful! I just bought a colony of blue dreams. I just had over heard people mention something about the substrate but wasn’t so clear about it. That’s why I just had to ask if it was a good thing or bad thing putting them in a darker substrate since that’s all I had. I’m assuming I’m just going to focus on the legs and feelers like you said. And learn how to practice selective breeding.
