This is the detailed history and back story of how and when these beautiful shrimp were created, and first brought to the US market. In this video I will attempt to answer questions like-
How old are cherry shrimp? When were cherry shrimp first created? How long have cherry shrimp been around? How old are blue velvet / blue dream shrimp? Who first bred rili shrimp, sakura fire, painted fire or neocaridina davidii shrimp into multiple colors, what's the difference between a blue dream and a blue velvet shrimp?
If you've ever kept neocaridina, a mano, vampire, or caridina shrimp, this video will serve as a complete primer on how we arrived at the strains and colors of shrimp we have today in the Aquatic Hobby. From aquascaping two championship neocaridina breeding, these fascinating and stunning little Crustaceans have captivated millions of people around the world. A small freshwater dwelling shrimp living in swamps and marshes of China and Taiwan, made its way to the top of aquatic pet stardom in less than 25 years.
In this video we will briefly discuss Rachel O'Leary, Lucas Bretz, and the hundreds of dedicated Taiwanese, Chinese, Indonesian, German, Dutch, American, and Japanese Visionaries in selective breeders.
This video will not go in-depth on how to care for these shrimp or how to properly breed them, but rather, the path of genetic selection, which has created over two dozen variants of cherry shrimp or more accurately- the scientifically named Neocaridina davidii, and palmata variants of freshwater shrimp.
These shrimp are a joy to keep in your fishtank, they will clean your excess food waste, eat aquarium algae and serve to create a complete micro ecosystem for your aquascapes, sumps and of course, your aquariums.
Cheers! - Alexander Williamson :)

In temperary pools in the U.S. there are wild shrimp loaded with colors. There tails were red blue. They were good swimmers and tiny, but I usually just fed them to my shiners, newts, and turtles. Didn't realize I was sitting on a gold mine.

Hi from France, I have kept cherry shrimps for 20 years in a 200 liters in the same tank from 1998 until now. At the beginning the colony of 10 red cherry translucide. In each year, evolution ! they had variations colorations, first Year : red Sakura, bloody, translucide, second Y : black cherry, yellow, white, orange, then grey. 3 Years after, rili appeared, chocolate, cristal red. 5 years after, grey and Orange, red, remain, few unusual unique patterns blue jelly red, green. 10 years after, white black, full black, gold... They are still evolving by their own willing in captivity with no mixing.

+voiture34 thats awesome my friend! This tank is just females and babies, i have only a few select males in floating boxes or other tanks, then i sort the shrimp before maturity. But no, it wont be pure or always clean. It works most the time on a visual level though

Im glad you like it. Thanks for watching too! Those are beautiful shrimp They look like the ones that Lucas Bretz sent me. I treated my tank with levamisole two days ago and in the morning all my shrimp were very lethargic and it scared me so I did a 50% water change. Well, this morning half of them were dead. And, for the first time I saw I had baby shrimp. I really messed up, again. The babies are dying too. I don't know why I keep messing up so bad but my guppies keep getting sick. It's the ones I bought from Petsmart. The guppies I buy from Twin Cities Guppies are never sick and never die. I don't know what to do to save the last 5 shrimp I have in my 29 gallon but I would do just about anything to save those poor guys. If you have any advice I will follow it exactly. Thank you again for your wonderful videos.

With shrimp the best thing to do it ignore them usually. I have shrimp sitting in a tupperware with dechlorinated tap water on my windowsill....only food is algae and fish flakes once every 2 weeks... i use ada light aquasoil and dont gravel vacuum my shrimp tanks.... most have a sponge filter... honestly i would consider moving just them shrimp to a little temporary, clean water setup...and get that water with the guppies changed... make sure its not too basic.. over 7.5 is not good in for neocaridina usually in my experience...but they will adapt to extreme settings if given time... i know that's frustrating... also the more shrimp the better...they eat one another's sheds and clean/ huddle up and i think it's hard to keep less than 10. I have videos on other shrimp stuff that may help if you browse through it all...however this is my advice as of this point in the hobby. Keeping them with fish is a problem for the exact reason you're facing...not only do they eat babies..but medically treating fish is so rough on shrimp...it may be best to have 2 tanks....and PS a lot of shrimp can live in a small space if there are plants and sponge filter/leaves or surface area to graze on

I just recently started following, and I have a few comments on your take on the genetics issue. First off, out domestic cats don't have the species name "Felix domesticus" (this is a common misconception); they are properly called Felix catus. As for genetics, sadly shrimp genetics are not well understood, and we can't even guess at what is dominant to what, and where co-dominances interfered with our understanding. I'm just getting into neos, and one of my goals is for controlled experiments to hopefully understand what the genes are. But answers like that will be a decade in the making and tons of crossbred (combination of 2 established variations) shrimp (hybrid should be reserved for when palmata species are bred to davidi species). Look forward to seeing more.
@jonstfrancis
@jonstfrancis 6 лет назад
Have palmata and davidi been cross-bred? I think I remember Rachel O'Leary saying they had but I could be mistaken.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 6 лет назад
+The Fox Aquatic ahh okay thank you. Felix catus! I remeber now...sorry i spoke off the cuff there. But yeah palmata and neos definetely mix, ive kept 2 together to watch and make sure they did. But the dominance isnt understood and thats why lucas bred with like 20 tanks or whatever..so each major trait was seperated and then he had other tanks and tried crossing them one by one, so theres unofficial studies by hobbyists for sure...like the red rili mix with carbon leading to blue... odd stuff like that. Your input is so valuable..do you have an email or fb we could chat through? Id love to check some questions with you prior to posting

@Fishtory
@Fishtory 6 лет назад
+The Fox Aquatic Apparently my naming error is from 1778 and a German proposed name just after Linnaeus had already named it. Cat Genetics are super interesting too! Are they even domestic ? Who knows lol side note there have been people wanting 3 species related to cherriesm..making them hybrids if the dna comes back classified as those 3 phenotypes of neo davidii as 3 seperate species. I dont have it handy but neocaridina zhangjiajiensis is also claimed to be the wild origin of pearls, rather than palmata...and some people say thats just a chinese name for the same thing. Its all muddied and no one seemed to document sources...i hope your work all starts back using wild ones and breeding them. That seems to be the only real true way to know for certain if the traits are from one source or variant of davidii (right?) What university or institution are you working with? Do they have deep pockets heh

No one knows for sure what genes control the eye pigment on most shrimp...it is seemingly not at all correlated to their other color patterns. Probably an independent gene...but many of my blues have eggs and eyes of various colors within a specific blue dream line

Thanks for answering my question in a video :) So probably it just means that if I started buying shrimp from one source I should just keep buying them from the same place and not from another different breeder or seller because even they have the same names for the shrimps, I still don't know from which line they breed their shrimps from. Thanks :) I'll wait for the next videos.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 6 лет назад
+Tangelo i left links in the description...if you want a for sure, true and solid line of blues... LRB aquatics is the oldest line i personally know of... i have some shrimp of his and they produce 95 to 99% true blue
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 6 лет назад
+Tangelo if you wanna go a cheaper route, you can be assured all cherry shrimp have genetics that will mix and produce stronger strains, so tampaaquaculture has 1 dollar cherrys and like 350 a shrimp for other colors if you purchase 7 or more....which is a screaming deal. They don't have a thorough bred line sometimes, but still produce nice shrimp that you csn refine over a few generations. Mention my Channel with tampa aquaculture and he'll ship a gift (with cherries he's known to ship extra shrimp)
@ProtoTangelo
@ProtoTangelo 6 лет назад
Thanks Alex, I see, I've seen some videos from LRB as well, nice to know that he breeds true blue shrimps. I am unfortunately located in Germany and I dont know how is it possible to get shrimps from the US. xD Shrimps in Germany are still quite expensive compare to the US, I bought my Blue velvet for 5.5 euro each. Some shops are even selling for 7 euro each. But the colour is even abit darker than blue dreams. Perhaps i can upload a video of them as well.
