Here's the video script:
Robert Johnson recorded two takes of Crossroads Blues. We are looking at the second take - sometimes referred to as the 'alternate take'.
Remember we are in Open G tuning with a capo at fret 3 and a bottleneck slide on your pinky. Here's a quick reminder of how to tune to open G.
So, today we'll look at the first four bars of the verse, which is all played over a G7, which, with the capo at fret 3 we hear as a Bb7.
Here's the first phrase .This starts with a barely audible muted bass note on the open 5th string. Followed by the 2nd string played at fret 15 with slide then a slide into the top two strings at the 15th fret then the third string at the same fret, with no sliding action followed by the 2nd and 3rd strings at fret 15 played with a slide down the fret board afterwards like this.
To help you see better which notes I'm playing I'll show you that again, in slow motion, without the slide. Then, to help you get the sound and feel here it is at full speed with the slide.
Then it's down to the open 4th and 5th strings, and a shuffle pattern played using the thumb.Play the pair of strings each time ... but on the second and third notes we change the note on the 4th string by fretting it here at fret 5.
So that first bar altogether. The second bar starts similarly sliding back into the single note on the top string at fret 15.Then slide into the pair of notes at fret 15 on the top two strings twice. Then we play the 2nd and 3rd strings at fret 15 and allow the slide to head back down towards the capo. And on the way we play the third string open before playing the note at fret 7 on the 3rd string with a slight down-slide before playing the 3rd string open again.
This phrase is completed with a barely audible timekeeping strum on the 5th and 4th strings like this. So, that whole bar again first in slow motion shown without the slide ..then at more or less full speed with the slide.
Here's the tab for those first two bars if you'd like to pause the video and have a practice through it before moving on.The next bar starts similarly. But after the two short slides into fret 15 on the top two strings...we then play the 3rd string straight with no slide action then we jump down the fretboard... sliding into the 3rd string at fret 7 then immediately playing the open 2nd string...being sure to lift the slide right off at this point.
This is immediately followed by the top string open, played with the ring finger on the picking hand ...and pretty much at the same time the thumb goes into this raking action across the 3rd,4th and 5th open strings reversing its direction on the fifth string in time for the 4th beat of the bar. This is one of the trickier bits of the verse to time. So here it is again in slow motion.
And the trick is to repeat the sequence of actions nice and slow until you begin to feel you've got it then gradually speed up and apply the rhythm, like this. For bar four we play the top two strings with the slide just connecting with the top string into fret 6 so the 2nd string is still heard as open.
This is then played twice more then the slide moves down briefly to fret 5 on the top string then slides back up the 3rd string to fret 7 to link to the same
thumb rake lick as the previous bar. So bars three and four together in slow motion and at full speed.
And here's the tab for those two bars.
We'll continue with this verse in the next Sound Bite
