Thanks for watching. What is hard to see in a 2d cut away animation is that water is accumulating from all sides of the house, and the weeping tile collects it into the sump basin. The sump pump usually pushes the water farther out away from the home and is usually in an area that will naturally slope away and drain away from the home's foundation.

Hey there, thanks for the informative video! I understand that sump pumps should send water outside (and not into the sewer)... but what happens in colder climates? How do we make sure that the pipe going outside (probably full of water if you use a check valve) doesn't freeze?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 4 года назад
You're welcome, we're glad you found the video helpful. That is a good question. Since the discharge pipe is sloped downwards there shouldn't be any water sitting in the pipe during the winter (in the same way that your rain gutter downspout is normally empty unless clogged with leaves). Because of the check valve there would still be some water in the vertical pipe going up from the sump pump, but this wouldn't freeze as it is still inside the house. Overall you can check the sump pump to make sure its working and draining properly. You can dump several buckets of water into the sump basin which will trigger the float switch and cause it to run. Then observe the discharge pipe and see if its draining well.

Our sump has been refilling every 8 minutes. Pump works fine. As a possibly related note, our neighbor has a pipe which goes through our basement (I know that's weird), and I can hear water moving through their pipe constantly. I feel like they might have a break in their water line and it is feeding water to our sump. What are your thoughts on this? What else could it be? There has been little rain and snow melt.
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 года назад
Thanks for watching. Depending on where your home is the grading of the lot a high ground water level could cause your sump to fill up even when there isn't much rain or snow. This should be fairly consistent over time though. If your sump pump suddenly started working more (without more rain or snow) then that could point to something else. It is possible that there is a leak in the pipe from your neighbor that passes through your basement. Try to see if there's any other signs of a leak, any damp spots in the basement etc. Still it might not be visible and could be just feeding into the weeping tile under the home so it might be difficult to narrow down if that is the case.
@rayngrace
@rayngrace 5 лет назад
Upon changing my sump pump, again, I cleaned the pit/liner first, before installing new sump pump. Also did the weeping hole per Zoeller manual. Pump is a Rigid 1/2 hp I noticed the bottom is cracked. I was quoted $990 to replace the pit. I Google this issue first and found out, that there pit/ liner is suppose to have holes to allow water to come into the pit. And then the pump to eject the water outdoor. So, is the crack at issue then? The water rises to it's previous waterline that it doesn't even trigger the pump at. It used to get trigger to almost an hour, or not at all. Should I leave the crack alone?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 5 лет назад
Hi Rei, thank you for watching. Water normally enters the sump basin through the weeping tile system although during installation some are installed with holes in the bottom of the sump basin and around the sides to allow excess water to enter. This can prevent the basin from floating up. A crack will generally let more water in, and if the additional water is causing the sump pump to run more often then its best to replace the sump basin. If the pump continues to cycle on and off frequently then it will reduce the life of the motor. Some people have used a marine epoxy to patch the crack as it can be applied and cured underwater but there are no guarantees that it hold or will be a permanent solution. Also in the mean time you can adjust and raise the float so that the pump doesn't trigger as often. Hope this helps.

@@AmreSupply thank you for the education. We had rain last night. Prior to that, we added extension to all downspouts, about 5 feet away from the house and the water table didn't rise at all. It didn't trigger the pump at all. I'm going to place a WYZE camera to monitor how often (if any) the pump gets triggered. I'll try to find that glue and patch it as needed. Again, thanks for replying and educating us. Have a great day.

@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 5 лет назад
Hi Mendoza, if you have any leaks in the basement or water accumulating then its best checked out by a professional. If its just a build up of moisture or humidity, then a dehumidifier would help with that. If you suspect mold, then its best to locate it and remove it properly to get rid of that particular smell.

Is there always supposed to be water in the sump pump pit? mine is dry right now
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 4 года назад
Hi Sean, thank you for watching. There should normally be a bit of water in the sump pit basin but a few things can affect it. In the winter, the water in the ground can freeze and will only start to flow back into the sump basin once it warms up. Additionally if the water table shifts or the water around your house drains in a different way then it can also cause the sump to receive no water. Regardless you should test your sump pump to see that its running correctly, pour a few buckets of water into the sump basin until the float rises and activates the pump. After it runs there will be a little bit of water left in the bottom. If nothing drains into it, it may continue to dry out.

Can you comment on this scenario: Let's say there are 4 homes on a hill with #1 on top and #4 at the bottom. #1 pumps onto the grass away from their house, but now #2 has to deal with it, #3 has to deal with #1 & 2, etc. #4 now has all the others to worry about their neighbours water + the water table. Our city doesn't allow pumping into the storm drains.
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 4 года назад
Hi TechCowboy, thank you for watching. It really depends on the city as codes and regulations can differ greatly. Most homes will are sloped so additional water will run away down away from the home and towards the street to prevent water from accumulating in a single property. With older neighborhoods there might be cases where the grading is not up to current codes and might create problems. It's worth looking into your towns website for a FAQ for Lot Grading Issues, and if you have more questions you should contact your municipality directly.

My place has a sump pump but the landlord didn't make the outside pipes long enough to where the water pumping out is far enough from the foundation. Water is just pumping right outside my wall so my yard is constantly muddy and wet. Does my landlord need to add an extension to the outside PVC so that it is long enough to go somewhere else?
@AmreSupply

Hi Sammie, that doesn't sound ideal. Overall more PVC pipe can be added to the drain. Ideally you want the water to be sent far enough that it is draining outside of the footprint of your home and so that the water spreads more evenly across the lawn.

Hi Keegan, thanks for watching. If your foundation doesn't have any cracks in it then water won't normally make its way through the walls or the basement floor, but if enough water pools and becomes pressurized it will start to form cracks in the same way that water will break apart the cement on sidewalks and roads. That's why removing water with a sump pump is essential.

@@paulamadeira6850 Without seeing your specific setup it's hard to say anything definitively. If that other pipe fills the sump pump with water even when the sump pump is turned off, then it's likely a drain for something. If water only flows through that pipe when the sump pump runs, then it's likely part of the discharge. In either case a plumber would be able to help you out with this.
@InderjitSingh12
@InderjitSingh12 2 года назад
What if discharge pipe water gets frozen in winter? Or gets blocked by snow?
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 2 года назад
Thanks for watching. A frozen discharge line is an indicator that the system was not installed in an ideal way. This depends if its buried or above ground. Insulation can help in certain cases. As a discharge line begins to clog, a sump pump system will be forced to work harder to keep up, leading to overheating and sometimes pump failure. And if the system clogs or fails entirely, then your basement will flood. If the discharge pipe is frozen then a portable heater can be used to help melt the ice. If you're having this problem it might be worth hiring a professional to help make some adjustments to minimize these issues.

@@automstone7613 It depends, if its running even when its not raining then it could be that your home is in a low spot in the neighbourhood, ground water might collect from more than just your footprint of your home. @@automstone7613 You're welcome. Older homes before the 1950's didn't have weeping tiles installed. Codes have changed decade to decade as some systems used to be connected to the storm drain but that increased the chance of basement flooding if the storm drain filled up. Now they are separate. Also not all homes needed a sump pump, it depended on how high the water table is for a home. If you're curious its best to check with your municipality for up to date codes. The sump pump will trigger any time that the basin fills up with water. Its not recommended to unplug it or turn it off. It will turn off automatically after the water in the basin stops filling up.

so sump pump is useless if the water table rises due to flooding nearby?
@AmreSupply

No exactly useless but if there is a high water table due to flooding, the sump pump might run constantly. Now if there is too much water, then it'll exceed the pumps ability to remove water from the sump basin. That's one scenario when there will be flooding even with a functioning sump pump.

What can cause the basen to overflow… the pump is working but when in a heavy storm, the basement over flowed and flooded the basement
@AmreSupply

Thanks for watching. It means that the flow rate from the heavy storm exceeded the flow rate of your pump. This might mean that a larger pump would be helpful. @AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 3 года назад
Thanks for watching. The water table is a big consideration when building houses. Modern homes are generally built with the water table in mind but not all builders take the same steps to addressing it. As for your sump pump running, if its a wet season where you live then there will be more moisture to deal with and the sump pump will run more frequently. The sump pump is pretty powerful so it doesn't take long to empty the sump basin, so a 30 second run time is normal.

@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply Месяц назад
Thanks for watching. The sump basin needs to be at the lowest part of the basement as that is where the water collects. The sump is located in the sump basin so it will push the water up through the discharge pipe. You cannot place the pump higher and use suction to move the water up the pipe as there are limits how far water can move via suction.

We have discovered that we have a foundation issue or something …each rainstorm we have had has had wet floor in the basement . If a foundation of a house looks like a "sauce pan", then why poke a whole in it to put a sump pump? Wouldn't it be better just to keep it completely closed "sauce pan" under the house??
@AmreSupply
@AmreSupply 5 лет назад
Hi Marcio, ground water is an issue for many homes and a sump basin is necessary to hold the sump pump. Overall the most cost effective way is using a sump basin and sump pump. This allows you to monitor the amount of water that is accumulating, and also service the pump. Without using a sump pit, the sump pump would have to be buried next to the house making it difficult to service. Alternatively if you wanted to access a exterior sump pump you would need a well or a hole next to your home to place the sump pump. This is why a sump pit is needed. Even with a 100% sealed system, large amounts of groundwater needs to be removed or it will damage the foundation. Considering that water can cut through solid rock over time, its easy to see how it can crack the foundation of one's home.

Thanks for watching. Water naturally will accumulate under the foundation and will crack the concrete. As well water can flood the basement if not removed. It's worth noting that not all homes need a sump pump as some are located on a hill or gradient where the water will naturally drain away from the home. As well what is not shown in this 2D animation is that water is accumulating from all around the home, and will be removed by the sump pump and drained in an area that it will drain away from the home.
