ALYA’S STRUGGLE
Alya grew up in a small town where beauty was often defined by societal standards-being thin, fair-skinned, and “perfect.” From an early age, she was body-shamed by peers and even family members for her fuller figure. Despite excelling in school and sports, Alya was constantly reminded that her body didn’t fit the “ideal,” and this deeply affected her self-esteem.
As she moved to the city for college, Alya hoped to leave the harsh judgments behind and focus on her education and career goals. However, the pressures of social media and city life only amplified the scrutiny. In the digital world, body-shaming took on a new form through comments and comparison posts. Every picture Alya posted was met with critiques about her size, leading to deeper feelings of inadequacy. Even though she was doing well academically, the constant pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards made her feel invisible and unworthy.
In her early 20s, Alya began to experience anxiety and depression. She avoided social situations and felt increasingly isolated. She longed for a sense of belonging and acceptance that wasn’t tied to her appearance. Her confidence, once fueled by academic and personal achievements, slowly eroded, making her question her self-worth.
Alya’s close-knit group of college friends, however, played an important role in helping her cope. They encouraged her to embrace her uniqueness and focus on her strengths beyond her appearance. They also introduced her to a support group for individuals who had experienced body shaming, where Alya found others with similar struggles. Through these connections, Alya began to understand that her value wasn’t tied to society’s narrow definitions of beauty.
