I rented an e bike and had a blast. Came home, did research on which mass marketed, generic e bike was best and almost bought one until I stumbled across your channel. I bought a BBSHD and converted my 29” MTB and it’s awesome! Thanks for saving me from a $2k mistake.
Same. Rather than sell my Trek and go prebuilt, I went with a BBSHD with a Lekkie 46T chainring, and I couldn't be happier with the result. Only drive about one day out of 10 now.
Having done a lot of research, I have come to trust Johnny. His advice is pure gold. Ended up spending a little more for a mid drive and couldn't be happier. Thanks and I wish I could send you some business, somehow.
I bought an X-GO 15 amp battery a couple years ago off Amazon. I had no issues with it and it was a big upgrade lead acid batteries that came with my roughly 8 year old hub kit. Maybe I was lucky.
looks like your last "where to buy" vid was 2 years ago. 2023 battery vid with links would be cool. I'm in Canada so your site may not be very practical. I know of a few site's like Golden motor but they seem overpriced.
I am on ebike build no5 on free chuck out bikes , over 20 k miles on them many with dog in trailer , UPP batteries and voilamart wheels np at all , obviously using torque arms on the old skinny raleigh forks or rear drop end . At the end of the day i prefer a front wheel conversion for simplicity . A bit of a learning curve rewiring a wheel after abrading the wheel wire but very doable , the silicone sealant being the biggest problem for me . I have old rayburn i do not use that i store and charge the batteries for safety . The only other trouble i have is a failed charger that was replaced straight away . I weld nuts onto old forks so i can easy fit disc brakes saving wearing out the wheel rims
Toseven is interesting, but they also seem very much in startup mode. I also wonder about their design skills with overly long cabling and unprotected wires exiting the bottom of their motors. CYC appeals, but I'm seeing QC issues that make it hard to rationalize paying the asking price.
Lectric Ebikes $800+ for a new bike. I paid $1000 for mine, extra battery for $250 10ah! The company is sending free brake upgrades to existing customers. 100% A+
Hi Johnny, Thanks for all the great info on making an ebike! I'm planning to use a Merida Speeder 300 or a Specialized Sirrus to make a fast commuter. Whats your (or others) opinion? Greetz from The Netherlands!
been watching forever o7 , my story is I use amazon pay for the payments with out interest...thats how I ended up with rad bikes, now I am wanting to build one myself out of my dolimite or my full suspention aluminum bike that fits me already , you have done videos on both subjects :) I have my own spin on E bikes tho , I started building my own batterys and learned a lot that changed my mind on a few things , I plan on paying the 20 to tell you about it one day I am on my feet enough to flat out afford a kit from you rather then piece things together as I have been doing - think I want to tinker with capacitors next with the battery sag I have been getting ... I just cant help but want to go further on the idea of getting 3500 charges rather then the industry standard of 500 charges on the batterys they sell lol - all about weight , but then they stick car tires on the E bikes lol ( that dolimite may have 5 miles on it as it is a bear to pedal with out assistance lol )
As always, great information! On batteries: What concerns me outside of the whole quality issue, is this trend toward a shorter locking surface. I don't trust a battery kit that doesn't have a mount that extends the full length of the battery. Am I paranoid?
I prefer to make my batteries from lipo cells, but finding the right ones is tricky, with the right BMS..You have to be deep, deep deep, into the weeds..And it's much more weight, but no chance of fires and way more charge cycles...
OMG Wild Wild West. I didn't know that. eBikes are going crazy in the US. I'm in Australia and can't get the one I want but it's readily available in the US. I can buy it online but all bike shops I've seen only ship within the US. I can have it shipped to a third party in the US and have it freighted to me in Australia, but now I'm having second thoughts. Will they actually ship it??
@@grmar1494 I thought it was a little weird to, the battery was like brand new then from 2500 to 2800 miles just totally deteriorated. But I figured its a Chinese battery and you get what you pay for.
I’d say it’s same for accessories I tried to add a different type of brake sensor that does not use magnet stick on or built-in type. This is the internal magnet cable housing style that I found on Amazon to try and it is the useless thing that I have ever purchased waste of money same idea I suppose with the batteries and motor kits just putting it out there
I got a good one for you! I have a wired e-bike with a 60 volt Dorado battery which is a 6-pin discharge port. I have a battery blender so I bought from Green bike kit a plug for the discharge for the battery. I checked the voltage with a multimeter and there's no voltage! Is there a trigger in the battery with the six pins can I jump one of the pin that has eight-tenths of a volt to the negative and turn it on?
I'm wondering if there's real physical differences between the motors and controllers rated for different voltages and wattages, or if it's purely programmed in firmware (and thus reprogrammable)
Where can someone get a dead (silverfish) battery repaired without having the repair place repack and replace all the cells that will cost 80% the cost of a new battery? I know there is (probably) a bad cell or two that need to be replaced, thats all. I know there is a lot of fear of liability in doing cell replacement, but somebody must do it. I think I coiuld do it but don't have the time. Maybe you can do a video or two on this.
Great idea for a a video! It is very labor intensive to repair batteries and most customers are not willing to pay the high labor cost when it’s just a little bit more for a new pack 😀
Just buy a new pack if there is already a ton of miles on those cells, because others are going to die..Learning to make your own batteries is the best option..
@@JohnnyNerdOut The only tear down video i've seen of opening the hailongs destroys it at the same time so, I am not comfortable doing that at all. Unless you have seen a video on how to check your cells without damaging anything? I've not seen you do one on that but I might have missed it too.
@@8thsinner maybe yours is different than the ones out there, but I open them up fairly often with no issue. Definitely don’t do anything you don’t feel comfortable with though!
@@JohnnyNerdOut Well I would definitely feel more comfortable if you had a video on that. I've been following a lot of your stuff since entering into this world last month. I finally got everything running today, still need to program it but happy so far. Although, your install guide didn't cover what to do if your batter and motor have different cables. I eventually found the supplied xt60s and after hours of bad soldering got it sorted in the end. Mine came with andersons and bullets...I just want to add extra heat shrink around all the joints before I call my cable management done. Side question though, if you aren't using them what to do with the orange higo connector, and the light wires? Cover them up with heat shrink do the job, maybe with some blutack against the pins for extra protection?
I’ve been hesitant to re order because those mounting plates that they come with are not nearly as universal as the shark packs I currently have. Night and day.
