My ENTP nephew will argue a point, and if I agree with him, he'll argue the opposite side haha! He sees things nobody else sees. He's really funny and super entertaining. He has really high Fe. This is the best ENTP video I have seen. ENTP stereotypes really miss the Fe aspect, and can greatly underestimate our drive. Even when ENTPs are "unfocused" they always on a warpath. Focused ENTPs can make ENTJs look like slackers or at least keep up.

I can think of my entp friend with developed Fe. His curiosity to explore new ideas leads him to bring out hidden gems out of people around. No matter how shy/reserved those people might be. This video is a great watch, I am often completely dissatisfied with the "debater" stereotype for ENTP as I am an ENTP who LOVES to debate things with people to get an understanding of how everyone thinks BUT I tend to know people's limits and I will rarely push last them. It is absolutely one of the most annoying thing when people miss an entire aspect of something when making judgement. Honestly, i prefer the stereotype of ENTPs being messy, creative, only low-key chaotic, person who can maintain group harmony and sometimes debates things.

it’s so interesting to me how a lot of people in the mbti community will so willingly call an INFJ “the most rational feeler” due to tert Ti, and yet the same credit is not given where to the ENTPs (and also ENFPs). it’s a pattern i’ve seen over and over again. although ENTPs can be a devils-advocate/chaos-monkey, i’m so glad you mentioned ENTP’s need for harmony! (albeit occasional) well done! :)
@Niveous23
@Niveous23 2 года назад
The INFJ is a master of: 'shutting the fuck up'. People largely just want to FEEL that people are listening. INFJs deliver hard. That doesn't mean the INFJ cares about you, likes you, or is even listening. But they can quietly nod their head and tolerate you. I know this from listening to my INFJ friend complain about other people in their life. Yes, they are hyper sensitive towards others, can separate emotions from events, and sometimes treat people like pet projects trying to fix. But underneath it all is someone that wants to be left alone.

The last point, about finding a job that provides stability and constant stimulation, really resonated with me. It took me a LONG time to find a career that satisfies my ENTP nature, but I’ve finally landed on being an chemical incident investigator and inspector (aka industrial hygienist) for OSHA. It’s perfect in being a very stable government job that gets me out meeting new people, constantly seeing and learning new things, and occasionally sparring in court. I recommend this to any ENTP with a background in biology, chemistry, or the trades.

That sounds really good, especially the stability part. I'm not an ENTJ, but I do crave variety (or a regular rotation of duties at least) in my position, and a lot of lab jobs are hugely repetitive, even to the point of causing me to question the value of college degrees. I worked in product development at one point, and it was my favorite job. I'm trying to find another one, but it is tough going.

@@FlamingCockatiel "a lot of lab jobs are hugely repetitive" - this was one of my biggest issues as an ENTP with an undergrad degree in biology. The only jobs were low level lab techs, which consisted of mostly independent, repetitive cookbook work. I was bored to tears.

@@laskyam You know it. The process of getting the degree (chemistry for me) was more interesting than most jobs it got me. I was micromanaged at one of those lab jobs, and I was/am ready to leave science work because of it + repetitiveness. However, there is a popular idea that science degree = good job and I had someone at a landscaping company tell me to seek work in my field. How did you happen to get your job? I apply for what interests me (product development and technical writing), but, alas, they all want experienced people and/or an advanced degree plus a salesman personality.

@@FlamingCockatiel I decided I wanted to phase out of lab work, so I did some research on what non-lab jobs I could pursue with my background. After some soul searching, I looked for grad school programs that would help me change careers. I was fortunate to find one (environmental and community health) that was local, cheap, and had a good relationship with some big employers. With a Chem degree, you could apply to my job (industrial hygienist) without any additional credentials.

It was pretty surprising for me to learn that a lot of people view things they see in life as "good" or "bad". I almost never think like this, for me it's more like "correct" or "incorrect". Eventually I came to realize that different people can see the same set of facts and come to different conclusions whether or not it's "good" or "bad". I guess my superpower is that I'm able to see all of these perspectives without being personally offended by it, and then able to get to the underlying truth that satisfies all.

Social harmony is important to me because I want people around me to be having a good experience. But if I determine I’m the only person giving energy to generating/maintaining harmony or if there is someone I know to be toxic who I cannot run interference for then I’m probably more likely than other fe users to stop directing my energy towards harmony. Two reasons: 1) I am not going to fight a battle I don’t think I can win; 2) I don’t want to be associated with someone’s toxic behavior - that doesn’t serve me well and also sends a message that others should tolerate it, too.

ENTPs are, and I'm willing to be wrong here, are one of the few empath types that can turn their emotions on and off....like a light switch. I'v had INFJ and INFP people tell me that, "just being around so-and-so is emotionally draining". And I could never understand that. I'd be like, "Just cut em' off" And I'v learned that what I consider something as simple as, "Oh....fuck this circus. I'mma tune this idiot out" is something other types can't do. I have no anxiety around them either, because I don't mind making a scene, and telling them to fuck off. Other empath types also seem very anxious about 'causing a scene'.

@@Niveous23 nah, this was clear in her other videos too, such as the one on romantic relationships, and the one where she discusses her social anxiety. Melissa shows every sign of Fi inferior, not Fi blind spot. She questions why someone might like her, and leans towards distrusting the intentions of people, and needing to test intentions before letting people in. She puts up boundaries, and is careful to control what happens on her channel. Being around people she can trust is very important to her, and a place of great pain when she gets that wrong. If you get on her wrong side, she will hold a grudge, and she has really made a point of how she will attack those who upset her INFP friends too. ENTPs really don't care about this sort of thing, if you're positive and friendly, they'll enjoy your company, and will easily let bygones be bygones if you may have had a falling out before. They don't keep score because they suppress their personal judgements and attitudes in favour of logical reasons and expressed emotions.

This is xNTJ behaviour, not xNTP behaviour and especially not ENTP. No 'cancel culture hype' or feminism, or whatever is going to change an ENTP's values to look like that. Yes, I suppose you could call it maturity. Maturity in it's truest sense is experience. And us ENTPs are gluttons for experiences, good and bad ones. I also want to point out that debating others loses it's zest with time. People don't like conflict usually. Even if we tone down the approaches towards debate. ENTPs don't stop loving debates, they usually pull back because people have very little to offer us over time. We're not stupid. We see that people don't like it. We FEEL that people don't like it. We understand they wont engage us because of conflict aversion. It's like trying to squeeze a rock for water. It's a little depressing, but life moves on. Growing up in a chaotic home, I had no choice but to abuse my Fe to bridge people together. Harmony creation came naturally to me. And while I loved fighting with ideas, I never liked emotionally filled yelling matches. So I had the experiences, but it never prevented me from starting arguments for the sake of hashing out ideas. I guess you could say I didn't find the two activities mutually exclusive. I can understand that some people could see both activities as hypocritical. I will agree though that over time the ENTP will have less reasons to argue. They aren't trying to understand your point of view as much. They've already gleamed a lot about others like yourself and put you into a box, much like an INFJ would do. They wont stop you from offering your POV, but wont bother as much to pry it outta you. The love of debate an ENTP is stereotyped for is truly a love of knowledge. And as an ENTP grows, he/she will find other ways to acquire that knowledge. I don't mean for it to sound harsh, but older ENTPs have weighed the pros and cons of debating you.....and have probably found it not worth the effort....and it's not just one, but many reasons why.

As an ENTP I really love your videos. You actually seem to understand ENTPs in a way I rarely see. I've turned 31 and I have found stability in getting a degree in Physics. I'm a semester in and really enjoy the day to day learning I feel in command of while having the stability of good grades. I have learned to hold off on debating and actually listen and tap into feeling this past year, which has helped ground me. When first meeting people or in fights with my husband (INFJ) I do resort to a debator and some times manipulative role (getting less as I just say out loud "You just did this and I feel myself want to use it against you just to take back control) because there's a thrill of discovery in meeting people, but it is easier to actually care what people are saying in a feelings way rather than just as a mental stimulation game. The non-judgement is a key point and rarely focused on. I value all opinions and ideas so equally that it is a way of caring and empathizing with humanity as a whole and individually. I do think my husband helped to balance me because he's so accepting and calm so I get to see what that's like every day then strive to discover how to embody some of those traits. We do love a challenge ;)

I love discussions, I love worldview discussions :D. I also love negotiation, I've seen so many times people changing their stand about something important. Sometimes I cause that. I mean - not forcefully! This makes me very proud of myself. It's like - everybody needs to grow up. Sometimes we're unconcious or we conciously push away something important. It's better to confront it and to decide calmly what to do about it. Not to run away all the time, hiding in the fog.

I so appreciate this presentation, as I feel so tired of hearing about the normal ENTP stereotype. I would also like to hear more about the Fi trickster function, which I do believe is finally accessible to ENTP. What do you think of that idea - that Fi is also accessible to ENTP?
@auntbeast9640
@auntbeast9640 2 года назад
if i'm correct, Fi is actually our blind (PoLR) function being as it's in the seventh slot. I just started learning about this facet of mbti, but it sure explains a lot lol. as an entp, it's so hard to know how i feel about anything! this goes for my delayed reaction to sad things happening to me, and it also makes it near impossible to develop a firm personal stance on a given topic. we naturally see exceptions to sweeping moral statements, and we're much more curious than we are judgemental, both of which make us excellent advocates for understanding the people and things deemed "bad" by the community but also leave us with very few absolutes in our lives.
@barbarajloriordan2697
@barbarajloriordan2697 2 года назад
I agree that some ENTPs find it difficult to know what they feel. I think, though, that as life goes on, we all go through crises. During times of crisis, the unconscious may take over, and parts of ourselves that we could not see in the past become visible to us. Life affords us these opportunities so that we can come to know more of ourselves. I’m an older ENTP (in my seventies), and I do believe that life has turned me “inside out” during several periods of time. In those times, when I may have lived more from other parts of the personality (subconscious or unconscious) I may actually have seemed more like an INTJ or even an INTP or even an INFP. During those periods, hidden functions may have emerged. I think that ENTP goes on its relentless questioning and opposing precisely because it is searching for something internal that it can believe in. The Fi is the secret lover on whose behalf the whole quest is conducted. I think that it is important to recognize that all the functions are defined by their relationship with the Hero function. For example, if Fi is hidden, it is hidden to the NE-TI hero and parent. If a child does not receive the affection and attention from the parent that it craves, it will act out - perhaps becoming a trickster. Playing tricks may be the only way in which the child obtains the parent’s attention. Along the same line, if a child is repeatedly ignored, cast off, and scorned by the parent, it may take refuge in being a “bad child” - that is, a demon - just because that is the only way that the child can get the parent to listen. For this reason, I think that it is very important to cultivate the parts of ourselves that we may tend to judge, avoid, shun, or scorn. All those functions can become our savior insofar as they help to complete and even resurrect the personality. That’s just my opinion, though. Others may see something that I am missing or may see things differently.

I'm an INTJ with a close ENTP friend, and I have to say he simply cannot relate to Fi the way I do. To him everything is exceptions, bending the rules, and 'yeah but what if'. To me an Fi conviction is unbreakable, no ifs ands or buts.

@@EresirThe1st I am hearing that your ENTP friend has a hard time relating to the world except through construct, which can always be changed. I think I that life provides opportunities in which all types can grow and change. I’m ENTP, in my seventies, and I do have some unbreakable convictions. One for example, is the belief that within each person is a being that is divinely intelligent, creative, resilient, and, given compassion, able to find its way out of any entanglement that it may have created for itself. Another is to look for the source of interpersonal difficulties in myself because the willingness to discover one’s mistakes sets us all free. A third is to understand the difference between saying something that is harmful and something that may be painful to hear, and to commit myself to doing no harm. Another is that each person’s spiritual journey is the most important aspect of their life. I am ENTP through and though, and yet I hold these beliefs as incontrovertible.

You have a real understanding of ENTPs beyond the "they like to debate." I was diagnosed as an ENTP (hehe) by an Industrial Psychologist - I had always self-tested as INTP but it didn't quite fit The Unifier and the Disruptor are actually in service of the same goal - the correct result, which we see almost immediately and just need to bring others along. For example, ENTPs are sticklers for getting the definitions agreed upon before a debate/discussion, so we aren't wasting time. In this same vein, I can see an ENTP spotting the cracks in a group, prying those cracks to break the group apart, enjoying the chaos swirling around, and then facilitating the hashing out of the differences and meshing the people back together in a way with no cracks and optimized for success. There is, of course, no plan for how you'll bring them back together, but there IS confidence. It's jazz, baby. I also don't mind letting others take the credit for it too, often that's a bargaining chip you have to play in service of the goal. (But that person better value me and my contribution) Regarding structure, I need it, but I need to create it. This gives me the safe zone within which to let myself play freely. Boundaries imposed by others are good - for others...I'll treat them like a buffet, and maybe like a challenge. It's fun to break a rule and get the rule maker to agree with you afterwards. But without any boundaries I get lost and overwhelmed. I can go deep (baby), but need to limit the width. Maybe I'll do one of those videos and send it to you. Plans plans plans...ENTP, so don't hold your breath. Where this video didn't quite hit the mark for me is the constant need for new...I crave expertise and that can't be achieved with flitting about. Hmm, maybe expertise in 1 thing is enough and that opens the door for the rest to be new. I'll think on this.

An ENTP implementation of that first quote: "I don't agree with you, but I think we're coming at the same thing from two different directions, and I'm curious as to how that happened. Let's see if we can't figure out why we're both approaching the same solution from different angles." I'd say that the second quote is better phrased as, "As long as we both want to see the problem solved, what seems like conflict is often one shift in perspective away from cooperation." No change to the third although I do think that empathy demands that you DO both agree that a given problem needs to be solved. As someone who is an ENTP when in a good mood, my favorite job was one where I was required to learn a great deal about extremely complex things quickly and then write them up such that readers would grasp the jist of what happened ten times faster and react a certain way. I LOVED it -- this was sci-fi level sh*t, too. Pay me to learn hairy things and then tell other people all about them? Dream job. And the constant influx of new information meant that I wasn't much distracted and turned into the workaholic I love to be when the idea buffet is big enough.

I find that almost regardless of what it is, I’m satisfied with learning it to 90% mastery, because I am interested in other challenges instead and also view it like riding a bike. If I ever did need to fully master some thing, I’m 90% there already. Life‘s too short to focus on one thing. I love, love, love new challenges and learning new things, but I don’t have the attention span to focus only on that I don’t care about getting the paper certificate at the end. If I’ve satisfied myself, I’m satisfied.

that's kinda inspiring, i always wanted to do something like that but i'm too bad with people on 1x1, groups are easier to manage i think i may try it again in the future, what's the point of being your best version if people around you aren't their best as well? i noticed a pattern in myself and ESTP friends that when we are at our best, everyone around us gets better but at our worse we bring everyone down with us. it's an unconscious process but if we manage to bring it into the light and use it for good, the people around us could grow kinda challenging though, but i'll get there

I'm so really happy, to see that video. Sometimes I just get tired of see only stereotypes, not going deeply and wisely in that topic. I start from the end. In my job, I'm really much organised and hate to see mess all around. Everything have to be logic and structured. I'm really getting mad, when I notice some kind of chaos, resulting from neglect and lack of focuse and too much slopiness. I have of variety patients with many disease entities. I have chaos on mind, when sometimes wanna explain what I think, but really organised in every step in major of cases. Secondly, yeah we admire chaos and debates... Yeah, it depends. For maybe 75% of my time, I'm peacemaker. I always say what I think and sometimes "fight" to prove it that I'm right, but usually I wanna to everyone stay calm and harmonized. Maybe it' s not on my very first place on to-do-list, to make other people happy, but I don't like fights for reason of fighting. It really drains of energy, that bad energy stays with longer time. Sometimes I say, yeah that' s so stupid, but not always.sometimes I drop the converstation and argument, when I predict that's clueless. I can be dyplomatic and really doing that very well, if I want, because of my empathy. I can really get in some shoes and feel his/her situation and I do not have to agree with his/her opinion. What is the most funny, me judging myself, really calm, sometimes almost heartless, really can be the most sensitive for someone's fate and needs. The most needed, especially. So yeah, it really depends on situation.

I think that entps might also channel this disciplinary side whenever they feel like it will open up more opportunities in their future (like a good college degree). Not because of the te-dom’s specific goal or vision but rather because of this need to ensure that they’ll be able to do anything that they want to without being held back by a lack of skill or the lack of a paper that accredits their skills

If you are really committed to the truths you are coming up with, you will give them enough time to bring them into some kind of fruition. This involves a lot of lonely work. If you are looking for ego-strokes or money as the main payoff, that's probably not going to work for an ENTP. The other thing about completing any big project, is that you have to discipline yourself not to get too involved in side projects. The most important thing is neither courage nor brilliance. It is perseverance.

As an 18-year-old ENTP, I often think my tertiary Fe is shown or expressed more than my Ti, or at least it kind of acts as a restraint on my Ti, to some degree. Example: I find I don't relate a great deal to the stereotypes about ENTPs being argumentative, whilst I definitely would enjoy a big discussion of ideas on controversial topics (on the condition of no emotions involved), I tend to predict more negative responses and since I'm concerned with social harmony and keeping peaceful relations, I don't tend to argue as much as question and invite open discussion and sharing. Is this a common case and can anyone else relate to this? I'd love to hear thoughts on this
