Just drove my 2015 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali 4x4 with the Duramax across the country, from NJ to CA. 3500 miles total in length. Average was 18.55 MPG at an average speed of 72 MPH.

William Dey nice!
@CarlinDontCare

William Dey the problem with this guy is that he drove at 80 MPH. It don’t matter what you drive, at those speed you’ll never get any good mileage. If you want to get good mileage drive at a steady speed between 60 and 70 MPH and you’ll get some good miles.

@@CarlinDontCare And the problem with your statement is that it appears you don’t realize that in some parts of the country, speed limits are that high.

I own a Hilux. Where I live we have no speed limits over 50mph. Driving on those roads I usually get a fuel consumption of about 31 mph. But when I went on a trip to Sweden and Denmark where the speed limits were at 80 mph, the fuel consumption increased till 19 mpg. High speeds in an unaerodynamic pick up is no good.

So true. I had the 2.5l Ranger, the 2.5l L200 and the 2.0 Amarok. The magic mark in the 2.5 tdi is some where at 2000 rpm. As soon as you pass 2200 rpm the fuel consumption goes up. below that is where we get the really good fuel consumption.

I've got the GMC 2500 with the Duramax as well and I'm getting between 20-23 MPG in West TN with a mix of driving on I-40 between Memphis and Nashville and some 2 lane country highways. I average between 60-70mph but there's some stop and go in the small, 1 stop light towns and I still get decent mileage. I've added an AF-E intake and that's it. I do have the upgraded Michelin LTX tires offered from the dealer and NOT the tires they had on their test truck and when I filled up last time, the truck's computer calculated I had 742 miles until empty! I love the truck and I'm not complaining about the MPG at all.

Same here Mr. Bryan. My best tank on my Duramax Denali HD so far was 802 miles, took 35 gallons to fill up for a 22.9 mpg average. I filled up in Homer, Michigan and drove to Love's Travel Stop, 11700 I-30 Frontage Road, Little Rock, Arkansas 72210. I used CC. It took 25,000 miles before it felt like my engine was loosening up some. The Duramax is without a doubt the best diesel engine of the Big 3.

I have the same result. I have the Chevy 2500 Duramax crew cab WT trim bone stock. 20-23 Highway @70ish (all cruise). However, as soon as a regen hits I can watch the mpg tick down for 30min. It takes a long time to recover from the loss (11mpg avg during regen). I towed my 9000lb TT 1800 miles round trip. I averaged about 12MPG @ 70mph. The TT is an older and has 0 aerodynamic qualities. I was in CO on the exact roads they were driving and it did not have a measurable impact on my MPG loaded or unloaded.

I own a '17 Duramax Midnight Edition with the same stock Duratrac tires. The mileage I'm seeing is dramatically better. I mostly drive non-highway to work, approximately 70 miles round trip through the NY Finger Lakes region. This is stop and go through small towns and hills at about 60mph cruze. I averaging roughly 20mpg unless towing where I get around 12mpg with a fully loaded TH. New, the mileage was mediocre but has improved dramatically as the truck has broken-in.

I owned a 2014 Ram Laramie Megacab 4x4 with stock everything. I drove 310miles to work from Louisiana to Houston twice a month doing the same thing u do to calculate my MPGs. I drove consistently at 64mph and my truck said I got 26.2mpg and calculations got 25.7mpg. Point is if want a 3/4 ton and still want the mileage or better mildage than the half tons take your time. As for the timing it added an additional 20mins to my commute compared to burning an extra 4-5gallons and spending around $13-$20 extra in fuel.

I get 18mpg with my 2017 F250 lifted 4" running 37" toyo M/T tires IF I drive 65 on the freeway. Just did a trip form California to Arizona to vegas back to arizona back to vegas and back to california, averaged 14.5mpg because we were going 80. The difference in fuel economy going 65-75 or 80mph is insane in trucks. Towing my bass boat 60-65mph I get 14mpg and towing my 5th wheel I only get 12.7 mpg. Still all of this is lifted on 37s so I am happy.

I have a 2017 Sierra Slt Duramax, its not an all terrain x, im running 34 inch bf goodrich all terrain k02’s (275/65R20) the truck is not leveled, (no rubbing by the way), and everything is stock, I have the air dam on, and I can get 18-20 mpg on the highway with the cruise set to 80, yesterday I had the cruise set to 78 and was getting 23. I think that not having the air dam really hurt the mileage of the truck in this video.

Nice truck can’t wait for the diesel f150 videos. Not for nothing but the HD trucks are good for out of the city driving and when you put as many miles as I do they feel stiff and sluggish (steering). Whilst I have two 16’ F250 platinum a 15’ F150 Lariat and 17’ 2500 gmc Denali I seem to always choose the 150 or the companies chevy 1500 for In city driving and in city towing. Hopefully fm will work with Allison to get and 8 speed or a 10 speed in the trucks for the revamp in 19 20. They are aupposed to be moving the def tank to put it closer to the gas tank so you don't have to be Roman tall to fill the def tank. I just filled mine for the first time at 5k miles or so. Don't know if gm sent it out full or not. Anyway had to have a step ladder to get to it comfortably. I am only 5 9 though

15mpg? Makes me glad I bought an '05 instead of newer one. I've taken mine a few long trips and always get around 19-21 mpg. Though, it's not the trucks fault for the mileage. Thank the EPA. They want cleaner emissions and better fuel economy and you can't always have both. If you'd let the manufacturer build the engine without the emissions and allow those engines to breath proper, low to mid 20s is easily attainable.

Then he states the truck only pulls 13,000 pounds. Another false statement. With 5th wheel or goose neck towing, the truck is rated at 17,900 pounds. 13,000 is for bumper towing on this model, which nobody in their right mind is going to tow 13K with the bumper when they can go 5th wheel and be much easier on the truck. Wind resistance increases exponentially with speed. And a big truck like that is about as aerodynamic as a brick to begin with. I actually think 15 is pretty impressive to push all that truck 80 mph up and over mountains. Most people don't need a truck with that much grunt, but if you do, the mpg penalty for all that extra capability actually isn't as horrible as I expected it to be.

Anyone noticed the Loved gas station changed their green lighted diesel price from $3.13 to $3.08 right at sunset? At 3:01 in the video.

Driving at less than 80mph on a 75-80mph Interstate is just insane

@@alexanderforsgren1533 Then you will get crappy MPG in a full size truck like the guy in the video. Same truck going 70 mph with cruise control set will get 19 MPG very easily, so you're losing 4 MPG by going 80 MPH. Even going 75 MPH you will get 17-18 in this truck which is still 2-3 MPG better.

AleXander Forsgren the point is MPG. My Honda Accord can do 40mpg but I have to drive the right speeds. For this car is 55 on highways and 70 on interstates. If go 70+ I drop to 35 o 32. I’m sure this truck can do better if they did it at the best efficient speed. Oh well. Let’s just go 80 mph.

My 2017 ram 2500 4x4 with a 6.4 hemi gets 17.3 on average highway and have gotten up to 21.2 mpg with a good tail wind, and that's using regular gas, not high test as recommended by dodge. Plus I don't need Def or diesel which is 20 cents more on average.

I think MPG is figured at 55 MPH and possibly even after the engine is broken in.

Both of our 2015 duramaxs get 22 mpg with the cruise set at 75. They have gotten better mpgs at times. So I don’t see why that one is getting so much less than ours. Fuel differences? No way tires kill it that bad.

Since the majority of speed limits are 70mph across the country this would have been a much better test at 70mph or even at 75mph since that's what most vehicles are designed to get best fuel economy at. Probably would have gained a mpg or two by reducing speed. Not to mention a set of all season or highway tires would have helped too, since a majority of truck owners aren't running all terrain or mud tires.

Just curious, but where did you get your information from about most vehicles are designed to be most fuel efficient at 75 MPH?
@chevyon37s

Alex Casey I've got no real hard facts from GM or any other companies stating that, but with a higher overall final drive gearing that newer trucks come with helps lower RPM and save fuel at highway speeds, and I've tested it on multiple newer vehicles and they all got better fuel mileage at 75 than the did at 70mph, which makes sense because a few states have raised speed limits, and even in states with 70mph speed limits many drivers run 75+ anyways and companies know that. Plus if they can make a vehicle get better fuel mileage with some gearing tweaks, why wouldn't they?

Drew w Well. . . Not arguing the accuracy of your experience, anecdotal evidence is not evidence. There is some very real physics at play, here. The CoD, is also a non-linear multiplier. There is merit to increased speeds SOMETIMES giving better real world MPG simply because they put the engine in the high powerband, the meaty area of the torque, and it requires less fuel to maintain said speed. Add in the MANY factors, and variables that every vehicle experiences, and you end up with real-world MPG all over the chart. Simply put, though, OEM's aim for the best MPG for the tests they are put through. This is why the extra gears, and lower torque peak output, benefits the rolling road (etc.) MPG test(s) that these vehicles are tested/rated with.

Okay, fair enough. I haven't done any hard research on this topic lately so I'm not saying it hasn't changed but typically vehicles are designed to get the best fuel efficiency somewhere around 55-60 MPH because that seems to be the sweet spot where the relationship between fuel economy and vehicle speed flatten out. Increases in vehicle speed causes an exponential (non-linear) increase in the amount of force needed to overcome drag. This increase is even more evident after 60 MPH. My proof for this is my 2015 Sierra gets about 19-20 MPG at an average speed of 65-70 MPH on a 100 mile trip. I can do the same trip and keep my speed at or below 60 MPH and my fuel economy increases to 23.5+ MPG. All vehicles will be different but in general most will achieve their peak fuel mileage somewhere between 50-60 MPH.

Alex Casey is correct. Most vehicles will get there best MPG somewhere around 50-60mph. My truck does its best at about 60mph. My Car was 55mph. My Jeep is about 55mph. My Yukon was 50mph. My last Jeep was 50mph. My motorcycle is 55mph. My other motorcycle is 50mph. Above 60 wind drag can get nuts. Look at hyper cars. They get to like 200mph and they they need another 100-150hp to get to 210mph.

Simple solution: Lose the def tank and those stupid diesel injectors in the exhaust. After having trouble with the def tank twice on my 2012 Silverado dually, A dealer in SC told me it would be 4000 to fix it, or I could run to a mechanic down the street and remove the offending def tank and exhaust injectors and then I would have a great diesel. He was right. Now if I keep the speed under 70mph, I get 19 mpg. When I had the def tank attached, I could barely get 13mpg. So much for technology

That's crazy that truck only gets 15 mpg. My 2017 ram 2500 is leveled with 35 inch all terrains and I get 19.5 mpg at 80 and 21 mpg at 70. 6.7 cummins
