How Fast Are One Piece Characters? 

I honestly thought, that even without me referencing the author, that it would be common knowledge or even just a basic assumption, that within the one piece world, which has modified TRUMPET SHOTGUNS(used by igaram) and literal AUTONOMOUS ROBOTS(I.e. pacisifistas), that the guns within this same one piece world, despite their looks, would obviously fire faster than a mid 18 century gun like the Brown Bess flintlock musket which already fires at 550ms (and remember the AVERAGE speed For the modern rifles that I quoted was only 759 ms) But I have had an alarming number of people trying to make the case to me, that every single bullet dodging and blocking feat in the one piece verse, even when done at point blank range (such as with sanji), and even the entire video itself, are flawed and wrong simply because the guns in the one piece world *****LOOK***** old. I really didn’t anticipate that someone would even think to make such a argument. That is why i didn’t spend any time addressing it in the video But anyway as Emperor luffy (another commenter) already pointed out, in SBS Volume 9, chapter 74, page 66, ODA(the author) confirms that that these guns are modified and improved versions of the guns they look like. And as emperor luffy also already pointed out, even in the manga itself, you can clearly see where guns (chapter 611 pg 13) and cannons (chapter 420) are significantly more powerful than their real world counterpart. So judging them by *****LOOKS ALONE***** Isn’t really applicable here. And secondly, travel speed and combat speed are different things. They interplay together but differently based on the range over which a battle is held. But just because a person can’t traverse a long range distance at “X speed”, that doesn’t suddenly mean that this person, can’t punch, swing a sword or kick someone who is close to them at or faster than “X speed”. If you want to learn more about travel speed and combat speed, and how they differ and interplay over various ranges, there are many resources out there. But I ****generally**** won’t be going over this in my videos given the abundance of discourse already available on this topic

What’s even crazier about the post timeskip laser dodging is that Luffy might not have been able to use Observation Haki in this instance. Basic Observation Haki requires intent from the opponent to be read in the first place, and thinking and planning mind, but as we learned in Marineford from Doffy the Pacifista are all dead on the inside.

I like that you downplay everything the characters are capable of by a lot and still prove your point. I'm not that familiar with one piece vs battles but people must downplay one piece a lot since everything I've seen lately was you lowballing feats and still scaling the lowest common denominator.

Heres how I scale luffy in terms of speed Pre Timeskip Skypeia - Enels attack speed is relativistic to relativistic+ via ODA in SBS volume 47 Water 7 - Foxy uses photonic beams which are logically lightspeed, more lightspeed feats to build consistency - Scan 1, Scan 2, Scan 3 Thriller Bark - Zoro dodging Kuma calc and scans - Scan 1, Scan 2, Scan 3 So, we find out how much 1 pixel translates to 1 centimeter. To do that, we scale Kuma's height to his pixels. According to the One Piece Wiki, Bartholomew Kuma is 689 cm tall, in the Manga Panel, Kuma is 313 Pixels tall. 313/689= 0.45428156748 So 0.45428156748 Centimeter=1 pixel So If Zoro jumped 296 pixels, we will use our formula of 0.45428156748=1 to find out how far Zoro jumped 0.45428156748x296=134.467343974 Centimeters So Zoro jumped 134.467343974 Centimeters. The distance that Kuma's Pad Cannon had already moved is 135 Pixels, so using the previous formula we can find the distance in centimeters 135x0.45428156748=61.3280116098 Kuma's Pad Cannon had already moved 61.3280116098 Centimeters before Zoro dodged, this will be important in the next section when we will need to calculate the distance Kuma's Pad Cannon had moved when Zoro dodged. Distance Kuma's Pad Cannon moved compared to Zoro. Kuma's Cannon Moved 115 Pixels let's plug this into the formula 115x0.45428156748=52.2423802602 So Kuma's Light Speed Pad Cannon Moved 52.2423802602 Centimeters Compare this to the distance Zoro jumped to find Zoro's speed Results (Mathematically) 1.55329512526c (FTL) Results (Simply): 1.6x FTL More consistency that pre timeskip one piece is ftl, and that luffy scales zoro Archipelago -Hawkins reacts to Kizaru, which is stated to be lightspeed, but this is the final part proving consistency 3D2Y - Byrnndi world is stated to be speed of light by rayleigh himself, the same world then amps his speed 100 fold via his devil fruit - So world is 100x speed of light, and luffy is either = or faster than world who’s 100x sol Everything besides 3D2Y was here for the sake of consistency, the real scaling starts post 3D2Y Post Timeskip Dressrosa - So as we know, gear 2 is a 10x amp via databook yellow Then in Dressrosa, doflamingo describes gear 4 as a several times amp, with several being more than 2. So as a lowball, I’ll use 3x amp. Given luffy was 100x ftl in gear 2, and gear 4 is being taken as a 3x amp here, he’s 300x sol. Whole Cake Island - In the katakuri fight, luffy uses gear 4 and clashes with katakuri at the beginning. He is then overwhelmed once Katakuri begins using future sight again. Luffy in gear even confirms that Katakuri using future sight is invincible to him. He then runs from the fight and says he’s going to learn future sight and beat katakuri at his absolute best, with rayleigh explaining that haki can bloom massively in high tier battles. Remember that Luffy in gear 4 at this point is 300x sol, which is important for the next part. Luffy returns and in base dodges, and clashes with a katakuri that was blatantly blitzing and overwhelming gear 4 earlier, so luffy at this point should have his base be = or stronger than his earlier gear 4. This is both logical and consistent with the series, with Rayleigh explaining it as a haki bloom, and it occurs multiple times later in the series. So now base luffy would be 300x sol, gear 2 would be 3,000x, and gear 4 would be 9,000x sol. Post stabbing, katakuri then says luffy isn’t inferior to him, base luffy at that. We then see 3 more pages of base luffy contending with katakuri in both speed and power (1,2,3) Once Snakeman is released, luffy confirms it’s faster than bounceman, with katakuri echoing it’s different than his previous gear 4. Given that bounce man was logically a 3x speed amp, I’m going to say snakeman is a 4x amp, making him 12,000x sol at this point. There’s no more scaling for WCI, besides luffy beating katakuri and his base being 300x sol at this point. Wano - To open the scaling for wano, we have luffy vs kaido in the town. Luffy is unable to harm a drunk kaido, and gets blitzed and one tapped in bounceman. So its consistent gear 4 can’t react to a not trying and drunk kaido. Fast forward to chapter 1000 and the rooftop, and we have luffy in base tanking attacks and partially reacting to them, with kaido even saying he’s putting up a decent fight. This logically puts base rooftop luffy > the gear 4 that got one shot in the town, who is 9,000x sol. So at this moment in time, base luffy is 9,000x sol, gear 2 is 90,000x sol, and gear 4 is 270,000x sol. Gear 4 luffy then contends with a base kaido, damaging him and showing relativity to his attacks. We get even more proof of base luffy being able to contend with kaido, and do it to a better extent than his gear 4 self in chapter 1010 (1,2,3). This would place luffy's base at 270,000x sol, gear 2 at 2,700,000x sol, and gear 4 at 8,100,000. The final quantifiable amp comes with gear 5 at the end of wano, with it being stated as an exponential amp of the users body, making gear 5 116,640,000,000,000x sol Final results as of right now, chapter 1054 - Base - 270,000x sol Gear 2 - 2,700,000x sol Gear 3 - Unknown Gear 4 Bounce Man/Snakeman - 8,100,000/10,800,000 Gear 5 - 116,640,000,000,000, aka 116 trillion times the speed of light

This is a very well depiction of how consistent speed feats of op are and anyone denying it outright is nothing but purely biased. Top tiers in OP are definitely way way ftl. We only need some multipliers or in story character to relate their speed to how fast they are compared to light to make one piece mftl. Hoping Kizaru would be the one do so in the final war. In thriller bark kuma was stated in the Manga to have an attack that moves at light speed called the pad cannon. Zoro while heavily fatigued and injured was able to dodge multiple of these attacks spammed at him making zoro ftl. Luffy and Zoro are said to be relative pre time skip, making luffy also ftl. In the 3d2y light novel luffy runs into a man named world who can increase his power and speed by 100 fold and in his base form speed blitzes luffy,Making base form world ftl. World with his df increase is 100xftl making full power world ftl+. Luffy outpaces and outperform world and defeats him, making luffy ftl+. And this is pre timeskip luffy In dressrosa arc a much stronger faster luffy faces doffy. Where intern we see gear 4th so, it was stated it increases his power by several times, several meaning more than 3 so lowballing gear 4th luffy is 300xftl. Lowballing gear 2 is a 1.2x multiplier so 375xftl. On whole cake island arc luffy fights katakuri where he gets a zenkai like boost. In the beginning of the fight katakuri as he states multiple times that he was far stronger and faster than luffy. He was even shown speed blitzing a gear 4th luffy. Later in the fight luffy actually starts matching katakuri in base form, outperforming gear 4th luffy earlier meaning his multipliers reset. So base luffy is 375 times ftl meaning now a gear 4th luffy is 1025xftl. Haki is said to bloom in the middle of fights stated by both Rayleigh and zoro, he's also done this in the 3d2y light novel and so you can't say it's an outlier. In wano gear 4th luffy gets perception blitzed by kaido. In there next encounter we can see luffy speed blitz kaido in his base. Meaning once again luffy multiplier resets and now base luffy is 1025xftl and gear 4th is now 3025xftl

Ok so I completely agree with the whole video but theres some stuff that didn't get mentioned. So I'm gonna add onto what you said here: -First off you missed including a piece of info on the Guns in One Piece. Oda actually stated that One Piece guns are significantly more advanced than the classical weapons they're made to look like. Source: SBS Volume 9. A lot of them are shown to be significantly more powerful than modern guns(Chapter 611 pg 13) and only appear the way they do because they're meant to match the aesthetic that fits a Pirate story. One only needs to look at how ridiculously powerful the canons are compared to real world canons(Chapter 420) to see my point. Theres other examples I'm missing for the guns but I don't have the time or space to include them all. lol. -The reason the Kuma argument is used is because people feel the need to make sense of Kizaru still being faster than preskip Luffy. Theres a moment where Kizaru blitzes Luffy(Chapter 566) and calls him slow, so the implication seems to be that Luffy is still "technically" slower than LS during the timeskip. But given your explanation here it's not really inconsistent if Luffy is only just barely able to dodge LS lasers pretimeskip. Meaning his movement speed would still be slower than Kizaru and he was only barely dodging due to having extremely high reaction time. Which makes sense when you consider that he DID in fact react to Kizaru in that scene at Marineford the moment he appeared but was simply not fast enough to dodge. -I was surprised you didn't address the other arguments used against Kizaru being LS so I might as well mention & debunk them here. People like to bring up the lasers trope in fiction. The argument is that they're often used purely for aesthetic and looking cool and aren't actually meant to be LS most of the time so just because you see lasers doesn't necessarily mean that a character is LS. Which is fair but Kizaru himself has already point blank stated that he is LS hence his comment that speed is weight. Indicating that the author's intent is that he's clearly meant to be LS so we can take it as such. The other arguments against Kizaru are much more stupid. They often come from normies who've never seen a LS character in fiction before and think that LS should be doing so much more than what was shown. Which makes it difficult for them to wrap their tiny brains around the fact that he is LS. They bring up arguments like "wouldn't there be a nuclear explosion or something whenever Kizaru moves at LS?" And the answer is no. Because while they may have that kind of force not every powerful attack is gonna cause major damage to the environment if the author doesn't want it to. You need only look at panels of Superman hitting people with planetary punches or The Flash's infinite mass punch to see what I'm talking about. Normally attacks such as these would cause huge damage to everything around them but that stuff is ignored for convenience sake. The reality is that Author's simply don't want to draw destruction all the time if it's inconvenient for the story. Fictional LS characters are gonna be portrayed in whichever way the author thinks is best. That DOES NOT take away from the fact that they are in fact LS.

This means Kizaru is FTL+ and I agree. Kizaru should have reached light speed the moment he ate his fruit. If Enel ever treturns and fights again, his attacks are not as fast as lightning but will be FTL+ too.

You might already know this, lightspeed(c) can vary by environment. An example of this is that in the sea the speed of light travels slower than the speed of sound and that radars are consequently more useful for communication underwater than light. Light moving through wind also has a different speed than when light moves through empty space. Unfortunately that's all I know and I can't bother to look up for the exact measurements but you should look it up it's really interesting! Great video as always, see you around.

The light beams from post time skip where he called them slow is only relativistic feat due to the distance however pre time skip saobody arc he dodged from way way closer and is 1.03x ftl. Then in 3D2Y (still pre time skip) luffy fought a character who was on par with luffys speed from the start but then he used an ability to increase his speed 100x, making him around 100x ftl in base. Then in g2 which is a 10x multiplier based off data books makes him 1000x ftl in g2. Then in g4 bounceman it x3 power ( which is speed and strength ) off of g3 for strength and g2 for speed ( bc doffy said it pushes his power several times beyond its past limits, technically x3 is lowball for the word several btw ) that makes bounceman luffy 3000x ftl. Then in wano kaido perception blitzes Luffy in bounceman, then after training he is able to keep up with kaido in hybrid form in base making him at least 3000x ftl in base, 30000x ftl in g2 and 90000x ftl in bounceman. This isn’t taking into account for snakeman which would make him way faster however I don’t know the multiplier for it, as well as g5 ( I don’t know if g5 is faster than any g4 so could be faster ).

The most concerning thing from the comments I've been seeing isn't if the calculations are correct, but how everyone's suspension of disbelief dies the moment lightspeed or FTL feats start being mentioned. Like are we seriously going to ignore the fact that this story started with a guy who turned rubber and where normal humans survive cannon fire like it's nothing, or the very simple fact this is a fictional story? If Oda wants to portray lightspeed attacks and FTL reactions without disrupting his story because "Light can travel across the planet 7 times over" then he can just do that because it's fiction and it's his story. Oda can play fast and loose with the physics of light without having to deal with its annoying effects like literally every other fiction author.

5:45 though I think Luffy scales relative to the lightning in at least combat speed, the AOE of the bolt is less impressive when it's blatantly obvious that it's taller than it is wide, meaning it would have to travel the longer length while Luffy would have to move the shorter width.

You probably ain’t gonna see this but if you do pin it :) Now funny thing I did an experiment I went outside for three people who said that luffy is not faster then the speed of light so I asked them some questions 1. How much faster is luffy than Nami and ussop in skypea? they all agreed on at least 5 times faster 2. How much faster did luffy get after the timeskip? The all agreed on 2-3 times faster so I’m assuming the lowest of 2 times faster 3. How much faster does advanced conquerors haki make luffy? They all agreed on 10 times faster 4. How much faster does gear 5 make luffy? They agreed on 5-10 times faster assuming the lowest we’re going for 5 times Now I guess you can guess where this is going. Assuming Nami and Ussop are at least light speed because oda himself said in SBS Volume 47 that you have to be faster than light speed to dodge enel. So with simple math we come with the equation of Light Speed times 5 times 2 times 10 times 5 do the math luffy is at least 500 times faster than the speed of light thank you for reading all of this and I hope this time wasn’t wasted

1:22 well, Van Auger's bullets traveled past the horizon in less than a few seconds, which we can estimate because his rifle was still smoking in the next page when we saw him. We also know from the Alabasta arc that it's possible to see up to at the very least 50 km away in the One Piece world. This means Van Auger's bullets would have a speed of at the very least 16,666.67 m/s. And considering how destructive some rifles can be in One Piece I'd say it's fair to assume that's they can go at 10,000 m/s.

Thank you this is the same thing I've been saying about kizaru. Because kizaru use majority of light speed basic attacks during sabaody arc and most pirates couldn't do or react to it. Saying that kizaru is only at light speed is like saying that if kizaru and enel where to encounter enel would be way faster automatically because enel is only lighting base which makes absolutely no sense. Some people try to down play one piece speed

My biggest issue with the way you measure lightspeed is the fact that people are using light that they’re receiving in their eyes to somehow dodge lightspeed beams. A few of these definitely were not using future sight either.

The photons don’t act like actual light and bend over 8 degrees, and pass through mediums.

I throughoutly enjoyed the video, great exposition and argumentation... But there're two mistakes! Niji and Kuma say "Kosoku" wich means lightspeed in a figurative way. Undefined Hyper-fast. While Kizaru is the only one to use "Hikaru no Sokudo", wich is THE speed of light. Lastly, as you said, Observation is at its best against known trajectories, like Pacifista's beams. While Kaido's attacks come from all directions... It's a whole different story. Hence why Luffy says he can "futuresight" Kaido's movements, surely slower than Kizaru's, but isn't fast enough to dodge them. While still being able to effortlessly aim-dodge the lasers. But of course you're right, you still need to be extremely fast. And since my comment isn't 2yrs old like this video, I have the benefit of saying Kizaru constantly blitzing G5 Luffy further adds to this narrative.

Does Enel getting stronger mean his attacks get faster? Is his attack FTL now?

Does a mage’s light attack move at the speed of light or move at the speed of however fast the mage launches it? Is being 4 times stronger than someone being 4 times faster? It could be less, it could be more.

Even with this video, you're still kind of low balling there speed because Enel was stated multiple times in an sbs and by Nami to be a light speed character. I would just make the argument that that his lightning is moving because of both the initial force of lightning and Enel's own force since he is manipulating the lightning.

observation haki does not equate to speed, by knowing a car will drive at a specific location does not make you faster than the car.

Snake man’s combat speed is faster not traveling speed

Gazelle Man is faster than the Strawhats not even moving at the speed of sound. I believe multiple people have Instantaneous Movements and bursts of speed like with Shave/Soru, but it's not consistent. Running Speed is and Combat Speed aren't sound speed. Their Technique Speed on the other hand is definitely top tier.

Good video overall, my only pet peeve with it was, and I know it's pedantic, but every time you called Sanji's brothers 'mid-tier characters', my eyebrow rose. Because there are over 1,000 named One Piece characters, so calling them mid-tier felt weird. Even if we were to say that they're somewhere in the 200s on the ranking of strongest One Piece characters - which is where I would place them if I were lowballing them - they would still be in the top 20%, which doesn't feel like 'mid-tier'. And perhaps you do believe that they are somewhere in the 400s/500s/600s of strongest One Piece characters, but if that where the case, I would have to say that you're undervaluing them.

If a person travels at the speed of light he can cross 300,000 km/sec so if kizaru was light itself or he can move at the speed of light then he could have easily killed Luffy who was in front of him rather even when he is far from him as he cannot kill whitebeard that easily because they are not pushovers like luffy(At marienford) ok leave that aside , if luffy was moving at the speed of light in second gear as you he at three to four hops of shave he could have reached ace instead of running the whole arena , then i think atleast three commanders(which is a downgrade to an yonko's crew considering by now itself there are two people who can dodge light speed attacks and attack at the speed of light as he says) in whitebeards crew should be able to move at the speed of light so with that three of them moving at the speed of light can easily cross all the attacks and go to ace in an instant ( leave out sengoku and garp guarding him just reaching would have been enough beacuse they are all running to reach and save him) , So here is my question does the speed of light varies in one piece verse than the real world or from any other verses , so how telling them they can move at the speed of light would be correct when comparing with other verses? dodging a light beam dosent makes you faster than light or light speed on top of that usage of obv haki debuffs it more . being speed of light means travelling the distance betn earth and sun in 8 mins. I dont think any one piece characters except kizaru can do that.if they could have they wouldnt even need ships to travel. lets not talk about how much energy would be released when a mass travelling at light speed impacts.

As always one piece fandom loves to dabble around the fact that there isnt a single statement to canonically put anyone above the speed of light at all and the only character Kizaru, is specifically stated to be travelling light speed and being light, not once is he or anything else described as being above it. Calc stacking dont work for speed in OP clearly, as we see that kizaru is still relativistic and characters (top tier ones) are only scaling to him now. Next to that we have O haki, that completely explains nearly all FTL reactions. It doesnt matter if something is travelling at light speed like pacifista beams if it takes long to fire multiples and you know where they are gonna be aimed at. Odas own databooks is still canon and Light speed is the upper limit that kizaru has, which other characters are encroaching on as the upper limit. Calc stacking bogus things wont get you around that fact.

I think they are not ftl or +ftl. I think the speed of the bullets and light's speed is inaccurate. If they were ftl they wouldn't need a ship. It is so ridicilous to try to calculate their speed.

Biggest issue with relativistic, lightspeed and ftl attacks and feats is that they make no sense from a physics standpoint, you need infinite energy to accelerate something with mass to lightspeed. So basically, assuming attacks are moving at close to lightspeed, they'd destroy the planet easily. Also, when u move at lightspeed or faster, u are blind for obvious reasons. In summary, it's a cool thing to have in fiction but at the same time makes things nonsensical. Unless you start changing the laws of physics, like vision not being dependant on light or having different kinds of lightspeeds, and also nerf the mass times acceleration formula to the ground, it is just inconsistent.

if they are moving ftl then they could just run on water it would be easy for zoro sense he did not eat a devil fruit. and at high enough speeds he could walk on water. even for luffy if he moves faster then light he could just jump from island to island. it would break all of one peice if they actualy moved ftl. It would take less then .13 secconds to go anywhere in the world

Light can travel around the earth 7 times in a second, if Kizaru is light speed, he could literally teleport anywhere on Earth instantly. He wouldnt need to travel on a cannon ball as it moves over 20 million times slower than kizarus normal speed. A light-speed kick would have the energy of 40 million nukes.... yeah it would destroy the planet. And why would Kizaru get scared of Beckman's gun? If he is light speed a bullet would be moving in slow motion... Either the speed if light is much slower in one piece or the characters don't move that fast

reaction time isnt the same as movement speed, you cant use your base feat for dodging bullets as your base feat for movement speed

All these calculations presume, for some reason, that physics and various speeds work the same way in OP as in real life. Which is very obviously, not the case. All things considered, guns are easily the most useless weapons in OP, killing almost no characters throughout the series except at point blank range (episode 1), or a character who's already half-dead (Oden), or fodder (and when it hits - the wounds are not even that serious). That can only be explained by a significantly slower speed and kinetic energy of the bullets. Light speed is probably also much slower in OP, as shown in Kizaru attacks (which would be instantaneous, unavoidable and unblockable, if light speed was the same as IRL); instead, we can see the movement, the light beams traveling through air at WAY SLOWER speed than our real life bullets. It's cartoon speed, cartoon physics, cartoon logic, folks. No need to overthink or try calculating anything.

just because you don't get shot doesn't mean you're faster than a bullet. it just means you're faster than the guy aiming the gun. Also only kizaru is light speed in one piece and the reason is kizaru's fruit only allows him to travel at light speed when he's going all out and being serious (when he fully transforms into visible light and starts behaving like it by that I mean his body is technically made of light photons but he isn't behaving like a wave instead it's behaving as a particle fully transforming into visible light is him changing his photon properties to be exactly like actual light as we know it irl) , because he can't change directions while moving at the speed of light so first he has to like "plan" his flight path that's why rayleigh was able to stop him from reaching pts luffy and his crew rayleigh wasn't light speed but he took advantage of the fact that kizaru can't be reckless with his power otherwise he'd go straight into the ocean at lightspeed or end up somewhere else entirely, and another proof is big mom unless you are trying to tell me Basil Hawkins has a faster reaction speed than big mom. because lightning is 1/3 the speed of light and if big mom wasn't able to react to nami's lightning bolt that would mean Basil Hawkins has at least 3x big mom's reaction speed seeing as he was tracking kizaru's kick (this is if you think everything kizaru does is lightspeed, but if kizaru is only able to reach his top speed once fully changing the properties of the photons in his body to act like a wave then this would explain the big mom thing)

From a pure physics stand point no one is above Light Speed (LS). Being able to dodge LS attacks doesn’t inherently mean you are faster than the light that makes up the attack. You just need to avoid where the attack is going to be. The fact that it’s LS is almost negligible your dodge time will be reduced, but not by much when compared to bullets. Now with observation haki (CoO) this gives you even more time to dodge attacks. Allowing you to use you CoO to start to react before the light begins to move. The problem is that your opponent is able to use their CoO to predict where you will dodge increasing the distance traveled in order to dodge. This would be why the pacifistas lasers are “too slow” and why Kaidos club is “too fast” to dodge. One is not using haki so all it can do is attack where you currently are and the other can attack where you will be. Also of note is that light seems to travel slower in the One Piece universe than in our universe. This would mean that the gravity of the One Piece is significantly greater than the gravity of our world, so their pure strength would be drastically higher if brought to our universe. This is interesting when you take into account that Don Krieg can pick up an entire ship with one arm fully extended and then hurl it about 50m with little to no effort shows that people in the OP universe are so strong it’s almost impossible to gauge.
