In this video I mill the radius grooves for the Haisley Fire Rings on a Cummins 12v cylinder head. This setup should be good for at least 80psi of boost with good head studs. Thanks for watching and feel free at ask questions if you have them!

As always, learned what it takes to have the wright machines and knowledge to do the shop right! Thx for sharing Brian. Maybe a jig boring SIP like Brian over @ metalshaper will one day have a Cummins head to do the same and share it being done on his SIP ? Have a great Christmas, Bear.

Actual question: There is work on the channel for ‘work’ and ‘recreation’. The jobs I see you do for recreation, in my world, are huge and amazingly complicated. How do you find the time to focus on these projects? I enjoy your content of a master machinist. Thanks 🇨🇦

I see there is quite a bit of protrusion of fire ring out of the newly cut grooves. Do the fire rings crush against the block deck or is there a corresponding groove cut in the block? Heard of fire rings for years, never seen the process done. Thanks for sharing!
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 8 месяцев назад
They crush about .020” so they have to stick out that much plus the gasket thickness.

I never imagined any diesel using pressures that high. I don't think I've seen my stock rig get above 20, ever. Better make sure all flex joints are good and clamped tight, I had a large car slip one in south Sioux Falls and it sounded like a double barrel 10 gauge going off under the hood. Can't imagine what one blowing at 80 would be like. Battleship grade, maybe???

I use to work by a shop that pulled semi in NTPA had a cat motor and they would run that between 140-160 pounds of boost

@@Randysshopthe guys running these in super stock diesel pickups (3 turbos, staged) can see 250 to 300 psi charge air pressure.

Is there a reason you set this cuttér up for CCW rotation? Suppose it doesn't really matter in the HBM, but its not like any conventional mill or dfill.

The tool you used, special cutter tool for Fire Rings, or did you grind it? It looked like, so I am assuming a radius in the cutter? How critical is that groove width to the ring? And what about head gasket, is there any recommendations with head gasket used?
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 8 месяцев назад
I ground the tool. It needs to be a few thou bigger radius than the wire is. The diameter of the groove to the ring is critical as you don't want it pulling on the wire trying to stretch it out to fit the groove. That can lead to fire ring failure. The stock type gasket with the factory fire ring cut out gives the best sealing of coolant and oil.

Wouldn't it be easier to do that on a verticle machine or does it really matter? Seems you do a lot of work for the pulling tractors. Have you ever built a complete engine for pulling?
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 8 месяцев назад
Problem with doing it in a vertical is clamping the head down tends to distort the deck surface. Doing it like I do it the clamping force is 90deg opposite so the surface that matters the most remains flat in the clamped and unclamped state.

Any chance that you will be reworking the engine in on old yellow and and raising some Eyebrows in the future?
@Hoaxer51
@Hoaxer51 8 месяцев назад
After installing fire rings are there any problems with head bolts or are they big enough to handle the pressure?
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 8 месяцев назад
The factory head bolts do not provide enough load to be used with fire rings. Fire rings have very limited ability to expand so it is critical that the head not try to lift under load or you will have a blown gasket with the rings still in place.

.007 bow is crazy... is that overboosting or too much heat or what ?
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 8 месяцев назад
Lots of high heat cycles. The bottom of the head sees most of the heat so it shrinks causing the head to bow.

Hi Brian, How did you locate the grooves on the head? ...Dave
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 7 месяцев назад
I locate the head dowel to block locations. I then know how far over the bore center is from those dowels and what the bore spacing is so I just use the digital read out to dial to the proper locations based off the reference dowels.
@michaelmarquez1519
@michaelmarquez1519 7 месяцев назад
How do you indicate true to the centerline of the bore? I must have missed it in one of your earlier videos.
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 7 месяцев назад
I know where the bore centers go based off the dowl pin locations so I center up on them then shift over to the bore centers by the numbers using the dro to cut the grooves.
@daleolson3506
@daleolson3506 8 месяцев назад
How did you go about lining up where to cut?
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 8 месяцев назад
I know the bore center and the centerline spacing from the dowl holes so I just pick up the dowel hole then put everything where it belongs using the digital readout.

What is fire rings or what is the need for them? Is it to stop extremely tunned engines blowing head gasket or what?? Thanks
@Hoaxer51
@Hoaxer51 8 месяцев назад
It lets them crank up the boost from their turbos without blowing the head gaskets. Brian’s an enabler, without Brian they couldn’t beat on their engines as hard! Lol Nice looking job.
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 8 месяцев назад
It allows much higher cylinder pressures than the factory style gasket can contain. Also the addition of the grooves gives it much more support from blowing out as it has mechanical support against cylinder pressure not just friction from clamping holding it in place.
