Frieren: Beyond Journey's End does just about everything right, from its characters, to the setting, to the exciting action. One of the most interesting aspects of the show for me, however, its is major theme of time. Time's passage, and how that affects normal people like us, long-lived people like Frieren, and the world around her.
So, let's talk a bit about the various ways in which this amazing show utilizes and addresses that concept, including a way in which it is a refreshing departure from the majority of fantasy series, anime or otherwise.

I love the scene where they go to a restaurant and she reminces about she recently visited there with Himmel and the others, and then gets reminded that it was 80 years ago. It smoothly and subtly demonstrates the difference in how she perceives the passage of time relative to humans. Many times it's a little too obvious and forced. Another one was when she says can't bother recertifying each time the mages change their organization because it happens so frequently, but it only happens about once in a human lifespan.

If Frieren wasn't an immortal elf but an old human woman this show would be heartbreaking. It would be a melancholic nostalgic goodbye tour not only to all the people she used to know and her past, but to her life. It would hit so hard it would break people as they would see the world through the eyes of the elderly, how life goes on without them while they who used to be main characters full of vitality fade away to irrelevance and then die. The thing that saves old people is community and family that respect and cherish them and keep them as part of the social center of life.
