Follow me at Twitter! / hensama24 Beginning a new series, I take a look at all the changes Funimation made to their FIRST attempting at dubbing Dragon Ball...in 1995! This video covers the Saga Of Goku. Episodes 1-13.
Always remember that Funimation would never have had the DB license if not for nepotism. But Harmony Gold having it first was a mistake even before that.
I actually watched the Harmony Gold dub on Internet Archive. It’s not bad; it’s actually pretty damn good for the first English anything of Dragon Ball ever made. The only dumb part I can think of is the renaming of every character, particularly Bulma/Blooma to Lena, because in that case, she literally has her original name printed on her shirt.
I've seen pics of the censored version where flowers & other stuff cover Kid Goku but I thought those were fake, like at least with the DBZ episodes the censorship was drawn over in the same style or at least an attempt at it. I guess they just had too small of a budget and/or not enough time because these edits look horrible. The wobbling on the new underwear is hilariously bad but maybe it was passable in 1995 with most people having small and/or bad tvs. It is funny all the lengths they had to go through for dialogue changes since Early DB is...really something. While it tones down a bit later on, probably best that this version ended so quickly because there still would've been a lot of work to do once Master Roshi becomes a reoccurring character. lol
12:47 Do you mean the dialogue was changed from the original dub to the 2001 redub? Or the other way around, which would imply what Roshi said in the 2001 dub was what the line’s supposed to be? The subbed version of this scene literally says “Sexy, aren’t I?”
@@prodyonX Yes, 9 years after the original japanese and 7 years after the french version which was less censored (actually only the dialogues were censored). Everything Dragon Ball related made for the US audience is disappointing, just like Dragon Ball Kai and Dragon Ball Super.
