Love it or hate it, Game of Thrones was a cultural phenomenon during it's original run on HBO. Yes, the show as a whole fell off near the end of the series, but that doesn't take away from the monumental achievements the show produced over the years. Game of Thrones Season 6 episode, Battle of the Bastards will forever be one of the greatest battle sequences ever put on television. But how exactly did Game of Thrones create such a compelling sequence only to fall off a cliff the very next season?

Watching it back after HoTD, 1-4 are great.. Season 5 is where it gets really bad. Like back in the day I was still enjoying it, but looking back there' so many issues. They needed to add the other characters in season 5, and take the focus away from others.. Sure its a show and I get that actors need to get paid and they have contracts.. But the show was getting popular, they could of been able to put more money in to make more episodes and hire at least one more team. Dorne looked amazing, but the plot fucked the entire show.

This scene was a masterpiece in every way except for one, the arrival of the vale's forces out of nowhere. And it's such a shame because it could have so easily been fixed with a single 15 second scene during the fight. Imagine during the battle, the camera cuts to a view of Littlefinger standing with Sansa, overlooking the battle. Sansa is begging littlefinger to push the vale's troops in, and he refuses, says they have to wait until the right moment. Littlefinger frames it as a tactical decision, but obviously he's also waiting until he can be sure he's joining a side that can win. Then, as Jon is being crushed, every second of the vale not rushing in is even more tense, because you know that there's a solution right there, and it's completely in line with Game of Thrones to let him die. When the knights come in, it's not a deus ex machina, it's a relief and a deserved, plot driven moment. This would also be a great starting point for the distrust between Sansa and littlefinger, that she doesn't think he was going to help. You could even take this premise further, have Sansa be the one who rushes in and the troops follow her without Littlefinger saying anything, marking her shift from a passive to an active character in the plot.

It's really easy to make up "better" versions of shows when you don't have to deal with studio interference or the logistics of filming and producing that version. That being said, I try to limit my edits to just being edits, things that could have easily fit into the scene without changing anything major or even requiring extra filming. While you're correct that Sansa's whole thing was nonsense and could've been done infinitely better, I'd argue this battle was a massive wasted opportunity based on 1 crucial factor. They didn't give the giant a weapon. The giant should've been the focal point of Jon's strategy. If used properly, he could literally be worth a thousand men. Give him a log and he'd lay waste to the shield wall instantly. Give him a massive bow like we saw in the Watchers on the Wall and he'd outrange all of Ramsay's archers while taking out 5+ men with every shot. Give him a bag full of boulders and he'd utterly destroy any group of men within 50 feet of him. Give him literally any weapon. The showrunners could've done so much with the giant but instead used him for a few cool shots and that's it. This battle is still a technical marvel, but the underlying tactics were so mind-numbingly stupid that you have to treat is purely as a visual spectacle, because that's all it really is.

Visually and from a pure cinematography POV, this battle is fantastic. However, both narratively and in the context of GOT, it makes very little sense which is why I find it hard to fully appreciate the spectacle. Sansa withholding the info that she has the support of the Vale from John is nonsensical. John surriving a cavalry charge and like 10 arrow barrages, while cutting through everything with his sword like they're butter and then showing next to no signs of exhaustion when he faces Ramsay tells an unrealistic "the good guy wins in spite of tremendous odds stacked against them" tale. As a result, the Battle of the Bastards stands as a massive turning point that shows the change in direction and the shift away from GRR Martin's careful writing and story telling to a Hollywood action story.

This battle is filmed amazingly. The fighting is damn impressive and it feels really horrific. Most of all when Jon and his team start getting crushed and or trampled. Tormund biting off the other dude's throat is also a nice showcase of using a good weapon: teeth. However. There are a bunch of logic/continuity holes in the plot, that overshadow all the aforementioned positives for me. 1) Why on earth would Sansa not tell Jon to wait until Littlefinger and the Vale troops arrive? To stand there as the high IQ chad after the battle is miraculously won last minute? Well no, that move just cost you like 3/4 of your army. Why the hell does she try to tell Jon he is dumb, while he's trying to figure out battle plans? When she can't give him any advice other than "that's not enough/oh but I'm no battle strategist, I have no idea". It's just annoying noise for him. 2) Why does Wun-Wun not get a bloody tree or 5 to roll, toss or swing at the enemy. He did it in Hardhome, why not here? Save some budget on other stuff and give him a damn tree/big branch. Jon would never let him go into battle unarmed. 3) Why do the Boltons leave Winterfell? It's the dumbest move you could make. And compared to the books, there's no heated atmosphere between parties in Winterfell at the time Jon (Stannis in the books) arrives, on top of mysterious murders, that force Roose to send out some folks to calm the castle down. Same as with Sansa, it's not a high IQ big balls move to leave your best chance at winning the battle as your first move. 4) Sansa doesn't know Ramsay's dogs are hungry, she left the conversation pissed off before he mentioned it. Jon has no reason whatsoever to tell her this useless bit of information before she walks to his cell. Jon would either kill him straight away or have him imprisoned and questioned before he'd let anyone near him. 5) Let's assume Jon survives the arrow rain and his fall off his horse without hurting himself big time. He'd never survive the bloody charge from both sides. I'm not sure what the best strategy to win back Winterfell would've been. Dig tunnels into the castle? Lay siege? Sneaky night attack? Get a bunch of people inside the castle? If the main gate is so easy to break, bloody charge into it with a ram or let WunWun toss a big rock at it? D$D tried to make Sansa seem intelligent, Jon brave and heroic and Ramsay an evil big balls guy, all they made them was absolutely idiotic.

Frankly, battle of the bastards is a perfect representation of GoT S6-8: it looks absolutely remarkable, the cinematography and visuals are on another fucking level of awesomeness and great performances as well from Kit Harrington especially. It’s just such a shame the writing was so disappointing. For one thing, Jon’s plot armor is frankly on the same level as characters got in the long night. Jon in S3 got shot by Yrgitte 3 times and barely made it on his horse and then collapsed when he arrived at castle black. In this battle, he gets charged by a calvary and is trampled by arrows and dead bodies and completely survives unscathed. If this was GOT S1-4, he would have died almost immediately. I get luck plays a huge part in war but it’s so ridiculous here. Also, in Game of Thrones, dumb decisions get you killed and Jon let his emotions get the better of him when he charged at Ramsay’s calvary alone but he gets awarded instead. Sansa not telling Jon about the knights of the vale was so idiotic as well. Jon was always talking about getting allies and Sansa didn’t even bother to tell him the idea, leading to hundreds of northerners being killed and how did no one notice the knights of the vale coming, they were fighting on a fucking flat field, you can see enemies coming from afar. Also, this battle lacked the complexities of game of thrones. Game of thrones was never about good vs evil and even the bad guys had some motivation but in this case, ramsay’s the bad guy and the starks are the good guys and that’s it. The morally gray characters that made the show special were all gone. Even season 7 understood that with the spoils of war. Blackwater and watchers were battles where both sides had complex motivations and had plenty of individual and heroic character moments but battle of the bastards never had that. The whole thing about ‘the north remembers’ is such a huge point in the books but you’re telling me northerners were ok to break their oath and go to the family that orchestrated the red wedding and killed many northerners? Fuck it! This battle looks amazing but Blackwater and Watchers show you can have amazing spectacle whilst having amazing writing. The most overrated episode on the show (and that’s saying something considering winds of winter, the spoils of war and the door exist) and it’s embarrassing how this episode that’s entirely based on spectacle is considered one of the best in the show.

While I can appreciate the work that went into this scene, it still strikes me as a moment that ignores all of the storytelling up to this moment. Jon's wielding a weapon made of a metal that we have repeatedly seen casually tear through steel, flesh and bone like it's butter. With a swipe of his blade, he could have made whole swaths of those spears useless before they could close in. Instead... Hero moment denied, here comes the Deus Ex Machina of Littlefinger's army arriving because Sansa "sent a raven" when nobody was looking... All so Littlefinger could be there to be executed at the end of the season. It was writing to serve a plot point, not to tell a story.

From a cinematic perspective, the Battle of the Bastards is filmed brilliantly. From a narrative perspective, the whole scene is a trash fire. The show had previously taken Jon Snow's character on a long arc where he is exiled from his family, then from the Night Watch, and regains his position only to be murdered. By the time he goes to confront Ramsey, we are led to believe that Jon has matured and is a fully realized, mature fighting man. He then proceeds to be stupid, and immature when Ramsey baits him by killing Rickon. Jon loses his composure and proceeds to make a suicidal uphill charge against a superior force. This episode was when I realized that D & D had completely abandoned trying to have their characters behave according to their previously established characteristics. Starting with this episode. the show became one long plot contrivance designed to get D & D out of the show, so they could go make Star Wars. Danaerys wobbled back and forth between being the Mother of her People and a brutal killer. Tyrion and Varys suddenly became terminally stupid, after previously being the smartest people in the room. Jamie spent seven seasons on a redemption arc, only to turn on a dime for no reason. Cersei went from being a shrewd and ruthless politician to a passive drinker of wine. Terrible writing!

I hate to be THAT guy. But as much as the Battle of the Bastards was a technical masterpiece, there's a lot of plot holes and inconsistencies that people forget about. Sansa not telling Jon about the Vale forces, and just waiting for them to come so they could attack with a bigger force, Ramsay not sending scouts prior to the battle, WunWun not having a weapon, Jon Snow's nonsensical plot armour, Rickon not zigzagging, and the cliche last second deus ex machina

I still prefer Blackwater and Watchers on the wall. This is probably the best made, visually striking battle in Got and I simply cannot blame anybody for liking this more, and if I would watch it just for the spectacle, this is my number one. However, there are just so many things that do not make sense at all, like strategy, I mean Ramsays is pretty good but the blind charge to thye middle? I know he is your friend but youre dead Tormund. Also, Sansa did not wanted to save her brothers, get gevenge for red Wedding and Ramsay and save the North just because of brief possibility of alligning herself with Littlefinger, which she does anyways and so it is absolutely pointless. Good video though.

Blackwater still baffles me, there is absolutely no reason that Stannis should be attacking King's Landing with a fleet that he bought. And WotW also made no sense: the wildlings had no chance and Jon warned them and they still attacked, and then Stannis's army just appears. Never made sense. At least the BotB had a reason to be happening.
@martino5742
@martino5742 Год назад
@@guzkus1 bro what. stannis had the superior force and would have dominated and taken the city if Tywin hadn't arrived with the Tyrell army which people didn't yet know he had. what other fleet should he have used? you say "a fleet that he bought" as if he left a homegrown fleet at home lol. the confusing part to me was how stannis got up over the battlements and then his men were able to somehow carry him back out against his will, like how was he not captured. and the wildlings halved the castle black defenders in one night. a giant got past the outer gate. one more day and they would've taken the castle easily. plus it was the culmination of 20 years of work gathering 100k+ people. mance had already sent teams of elite fighters over the wall to wreak havoc and attack from the south. and they're supposed to listen to Jon's warning? "well, the crow told us not to attack the crows, so I guess we just won't" yea that makes sense, they should just wait there to be beheaded. And we'd known that stannis was coming north since like season 3 so while it was surprising (very cool moment imo), Stannis' army showing up wasn't completely out of the blue. it was more "oh shit I forgot about them!" than "wait what the fuck are they doing there?" ps the wildlings had less of a chance against the undead army than they would have had against any living army. and castle black wasn't even an army it was 100 guys and a wall. the wall was doing most of the work lol ill take my chances against a wall that can be climbed or penetrated if the alternative is zombie apocalypse
@guzkus1
@guzkus1 Год назад
@@martino5742 Stannis had a mostly mercenary force and no allies. Tywin obviously would be getting allies; the idea that Stannis could beat Tywin in a battle is ridiculous and he should have known it. And his homegrown fleet was a weakened Baratheon fleet, which is why he needed Saan's ships. Also him not getting captured or killed is ridiculous: at least Ramsay got marked at the end of BotB. Mance had no chance and should have brokered peace. Instead he just died and got everyone killed and his army ended up serving Jon anyway after Hardhome. Not much logic to any of that, and it is also weird that Stannis went to the wall to attack wildlings instead of gathering southern troops to take Winterfell.

As much as I love the cinematography and the fight sequences in the Battle of the Bastards, I think this is one of the most overrated episodes in TV history. I’m mainly saying this because of it’s 9.9 rating on IMDB which is very rare to get, and the huge praise this episode always gets from fans and critics. Game Of Thrones in the early seasons was known for its consequences and characters always facing death for their wrong doings and not being saved by plot armor. This episode is the exact opposite. Jon bites the bait and goes to try and save Rickon and is met alone in the middle of the battlefield. What’s the consequence? He’s likely to get destroyed by the ARMY that is marching his way. But instead, his army ALSO marches, and somehow he stands in the middle all alone and doesn’t get touched. That’s not to mention him getting trampled by many soldiers, the many arrows that miraculously don’t hit him, and Ramsey just magically shooting a giant that’s already on the brink of death instead of the man that led this battle on the other side. And I didn’t even bring up the devoid of logic plot with Sansa not telling Jon that they have a whole army potentially being on their side. Not trying to beat a dead horse since this shows reputation has been forever scarred by the final season, but I just think people are too generous with some episodes, even seasons prior to it.

The Battle of The Bastards is overrated. It was a visual masterpiece, under which were hidden story plot holes so big, even Balerion could fit in. this battle drove me nuts because why would jon's army just sit there and let the bolton forces close in on them? the phalanx was horrifically designed; the formation was super thin and only every other man had a spear. jon's forces were boxed in facing death with no where to go, they would have pushed forward and fought desperately to escape, which would have been easy with just a tiny bit of coordination and realism because of the aforementioned issues with the bolton line, but the writers don't really understand military tactics or human psychology. so they just sent in one or two guys at a time which somehow discouraged the thousands that could have overwhelmed the line. beyond my issues everyone participating did a fantastic job with what they were given. ignoring the lack of realism the desperation and carnage displayed was truly remarkable, but for me it's hard to look past how unnecessary it was.

Look I am a simple man, the battle itself in regards to acting and entertainment was great. However the story telling was dogshit, not surprising since this was in season 6 and after season 4 the quality of writing deteriated. That tactics used by both parties is rediculous, my 6 year old nephew could come up with better battle strategies, and for some characters it felt like a regression, Jon snow becoming an emotional twat who thought charging at Ramsey was ok resulting in his forces loosing lives for no reason. Sansa being a tosspot for not telling him about the vale willing to help them was both a moral and tactical blunder to her character. Not to mention despite their being no books to adapt after this it still fails as an adaptation as they took Small Jon Umber and made him a piece of shit who was happy that his father died, while in the books then man dies defending Rob Stark during the red wedding. Black water and Castle black are not only comparable to BOTB in regards to visuals but the story telling is leaps and bounds ahead.

I was disappointed with the battle of the Blackwater when I saw it in the show. The book version goes on for a while with people jumping from sinking ship to sinking ship. Tyrion's wound isn't as bad in the show as it is in the book. I understand why they have to make these changes. I do get it. I just wish the ship battle was more than just an explosion. Tyrion also has the entire Street of Steel working on a massive chain that he has raised at the mouth of the bay to trap the ships and that's not in the show at all. But, they totally redeemed that with the battle of the bastards. It's my favorite episode from the entire Game of Thrones TV run.
