Fun fact why he’s called Geohot. He went to my high school, and when they give you an email it’s the first 3 letters of your first and last name. (Geo)rge (Hot)z. If your email name was pronounceable it would be adopted as a nickname within the school. Mine was Jalgon.

It's great to see one of the greatest minds of our time devoting himself for good. Both in the interview footage and while talking with John, he smiles when saying wither "people can just download the code and add it to old tesla" and "our software is free". He really sounds and seems like a technologic force for good. I'm not his target audience, but I love it that he's doing what he's doing and how he's doing what he's doing.

It's fascinating, I hope more and more people think about innovation this way, as of 2023, still a lot of companies try to keep the old business model, where they sell a new product every 1-3 year with little to no innovation, and as we already have AI tools now, upgradable autopilot feature must be default for new cars and I think any company that doesn't include this feature in base model let's say, should at least add integration ports

Great intro video. can you do a more deep dive on where/how the 3X trains its AI model and also a demo of it in city traffic? So far this seems more of "a hack" to a car's existing cruise control system versus a bottoms up self driving system. Can you try it on another car brand, one that isn't recommended by the company.
@emeraldbonsai
@emeraldbonsai 5 месяцев назад
The ones that are recommended are because they have egough sensors to be able to do self driving. It just hijacks the sensor outputs
@vatzcar
@vatzcar 5 месяцев назад
@@emeraldbonsai No, it doesn't. It just sends commands to the CAN bus. Openpilot is still a vision-based system and its vision is from the cameras of Comma devices. That's why it's still Level 2. Level 3 requires environmental awareness so it can do fully autonomous driving. For that Comma devices will require more camera inputs to build a 360° view of the car. Currently, Comma 3x has 360° view of the device only. Recommended cars are recommended because those cars allow more programmatic control (commands through CAN bus) of the car and Openpilot is more compatible with the system of those cars.

@abdulr2084
@abdulr2084 8 месяцев назад
Comma uses mad-in-middle attack/control. It sits between car camera and ECU and sends command to steer and control gas/brakes to your car if there's lane keep assist system in your car. Its still referred to as dev kit which is why it isnt "massively" available. They are pretty well known in tech community and do no marketing. Most people using it know know its limitation as a L2 system (driver MUST ALWAYS PAY ATTENTION)

Thank you John and George for the insight. When I got it right, the vehicle needs to have OBD (which I standard since around 20 years). But it must be possible - to control (power) steering and - the brakes through the OBD interface. The comma hardware gets the images from the road and from the driver, and some information like speed through OBD. Then it gives - directions to steering, - acceleration, - deceleration and - brakes. Correct? Are there any special requirement as e.g. low cost Dacia (I think all of Renault) is not supported? Are there reasons why some of the Japanese cars are better supported?
@hjjr31
@hjjr31 8 месяцев назад
Yeah that's pretty much how it works, but the Comma hardware also taps into the radar systems in supported cars too. Toyota as an example adds safety features as standard even on basic models in the United States. Things like emergency braking, lane keep assist, and smart/adaptive cruise control provide computer control for brakes, steering, and acceleration/radar sensors. I personally ran a Comma unit on a Chevy Bolt EV before I sold the car. It was a very nice system.
@dunnetahl
@dunnetahl 7 месяцев назад
@@hjjr31 thanks for this information. Since you have some experience with the system, can you comment on how often you had to make interventions or manual takeover when using the system? This video seems to suggest you can just punch in an address and the car will drive you there with no intervention, which seems to put it ahead of Tesla's FSD system. Is this your experience or have I misinterpreted the video? Also, not sure if you know this at all, but how is a system this compact able to do so much better than Telsa FSD with a tiny fraction of the data and processing power of Tesla's fleet?

@vaisakhkm783
@vaisakhkm783 8 месяцев назад
What you folks are talking about as "commaAI" is, in fact, GNU/commaAI, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus commaAI. CommaAI is not an autonomous driving system unto itself, but rather another crucial component of a fully functioning GNU autonomous driving platform made practical by the GNU core components, algorithms, and essential software components that constitute a comprehensive autonomous driving system as defined by the automotive industry standards. Many vehicle manufacturers utilize a modified version of the GNU/commaAI system every day, without realizing it. Through a unique series of developments, the version of the autonomous driving platform that is widely used today is often referred to as "commaAI," and many of its users are unaware that it is essentially the GNU autonomous driving system, developed by the GNU Autonomous Driving Project. There genuinely is a commaAI, and these individuals are implementing it, but it is just one part of the broader system they rely on. CommaAI is the self-driving technology: the software in the system that controls the vehicle's operations and responses to various driving scenarios. This self-driving technology is an essential part of an autonomous driving platform but can't function in isolation. It can only operate within the context of a complete autonomous driving system. CommaAI is commonly used in conjunction with the GNU autonomous driving system: the complete system is essentially GNU with commaAI integrated, or GNU/commaAI. All the so-called "commaAI" implementations are genuinely distributions of GNU/commaAI. Thanks for taking the time to collaborate with me, your friendly GNU+commaAI enthusiast, Richard Stallman

While I don't think this has any chance of being on par with FSD considering Tesla's NN hardware and dojo, I do really like the free aspect of it. Hell, I do like the idea that I could theoretically do something super illegal like remotely "driving" a car with little intervention to another town. Or adding my own UI on top, or even integrating the thing to whatever home automation / synchronized dance thing I want, as it's already providing the connected car interface on a piece of hardware you properly own and control. That said, I don't really dislike Tesla's AI approach one bit. They have their right to keep their stuff as nipped in the bud as possible while blazing a trail and being the first to normalize your car turning in to a fully automated robotaxi worker when you don't need it. Can't get the kind of numbers they get while being libre. Elon is overly optimistic sure, but that for me is just a good-meaning thing like valve time.

Autonomous vehicles, including self-driving taxis, promise a major leap forward in transportation. They're not just about convenience; they could significantly reduce accidents and fatalities with advanced autonomous braking systems. Contrary to concerns about economic impacts, autonomous taxis could thrive within capitalist systems, acting as 'self-operating employees' for their owners. These vehicles can offer round-the-clock service, maximizing utility and efficiency. This would not only enhance accessibility for users but could also decrease the number of cars on the road, leading to lower emissions and less congestion. Economically, autonomous taxis may cut operational costs, like driver wages and accident-related expenses, translating into savings for consumers through lower fares. The shift towards autonomous taxi fleets would demand a significant economic transition, including workforce retraining and infrastructure development. However, the potential for safer, more efficient, and greener transportation makes it a pursuit worth exploring.

If the device was white it would be lot more likely to see it's reflection on the windshield which is just a no-no for car stuff overall.
