Dude it has infected many games.. -.Fallout is also one of them. Tomb Raider is another one. It gets worse and worse. Graphics get good but game play gets absolutely child level retarded. I even start to think the games are now made for only FEMALE RU-vidRS . Not for the real fans of the games. ( joking, but yeah game are more and more made for the masses , the dumb average masses )

@@Evanz111 Nah, Telltale never had Sony money to blow on cheap emotional manipulation and even their writing at its worst was stronger than David Cage. Their problem was more about players becoming uninterested after seeing the same tired Telltale format in every game with little to no change up. Their problems came from within. So as funny as it is to blame David Cage, Telltale really didn't have time to be influenced by anyone because they kept desperately taking on new IPs in the hopes of one of them matching the success of TWD Season 1. Until they bit off more than their employees could chew, exhausted all their money and went belly up thats what they did. At least Telltale didn't openly tell people to "only play their games once."

Agreed...the point he is hitting at just feels weird to even discuss without talking about Naughty Dog's influence with Uncharted and The Last of Us. God of War 2018 basically feels like Corey wanted to make the next The Last of Us.

I just want developers to realize that making even the most basic enemies into nigh immortal god-like beings that can literally soak up damage equivalent to late game bosses is not a valid reason for “higher difficulties”. There is literally no middle ground. It’s either “everything is very manageable” or “fuck you and everything you like about this game. I will make you hate it” Seeing Ethan dump literally everything into the first enemy with zero notification of damage and essentially forced to use infinite ammo for VOS mode and Kratos literally struggling to take down the first few enemies with a literal god-tier weapon is just frustrating really to witness really

He could have also compared that to the RE3 Remake, where the exploration’s depth and variety of challenges are lackluster. Plus the highest default difficulty still allows Nemesis to be downed with a single grenade, and so on. A chunk of its fans try to shut down that criticism, by bringing up the unlockable Nightmare and Inferno difficulties. But those difficulties do almost nothing to fix the lack of challenging exploration, and the combat challenge is raised almost exclusively by raising the power, speed, and quantity of certain monsters, until it becomes unbalanced in the opposite direction. Even then, there is no penalty for using the bonus shop items, including the infinite rocket launcher, which even renders most of the other bonus items obsolete. So with bonuses like the infinite rocket launcher, the only part that could still be very challenging was the final boss fight, which could only be accomplished by making the battle even more broken and unbalanced. Like you said, there appears to be almost no middle ground in RE3 Remake.

I like DMC’s approach to difficulty where it actually changes the enemies you fight (some of the late game enemies appear earlier) and gives them new things (they can also DT on higher difficulties for instance) in addition to making them a bit tougher so it doesn’t end up being just the same game but you die in 2 hits while the even the very first enemy dies in 22. There’s also the Doom 2016 approach where enemies’ health stay the same but you die easier and also, I think, health and ammo drop less but I could be wrong on this one.

@@miy1925hassun modern doom games make you squishier, yes. and enemies do harder attacks more often. I love the way dmc does it, playing on the highest difficulty feels amazing pulling out 5 combos in a row and performing split second dodges.

I agree. I hate this movie game trend. Removing player agency for the sake of being cinematic and all. You can tell your story but when it comes to controlling the character just allow me to be gamey as hell. I'll take Devil May Cry, Bayonetta and Bloodborne, Classic Resident Evil anyday over these movie games.

Eh I love both. As long as its made abundantly clear which type of format the game is going for I don't mind. Gow 2018's biggest fault was that it was a movie type game while being in an action focused franchise prior to it. Game as a whole though, it was great in its type like how of God of War games were great action games.

Foreal tho. God of War developers put most if its focus setting a linear hyperdrama story. That made easy mode the catered mode. High difficulty setting isnt challenging. Its tedious. You know what to do but it takes forever cause the enemies are all damage sponges. Its lazy.

I dunno. They just aimed for an audience that’s not theirs while getting rid of what made the previous games so great. It’s awesome to aim for casual players. But changing the design philosophy of the game to accommodate is downright retarded. Making a well written tutorial or a good starting area to hook in new players is much better. That way you have the new players and the old players and the game keeps what made it so great.

the way i see it, both old and new god of war had poor difficulty selection based on what you said. someone who wanted an easier run of old gow will just be frustrated by those platforming sections (especially ones in hades, damn still have memories of being stuck for hours) and someone who wanted a harder run of new gow will just be disappointed that combat segments are the only challenging parts of the game and other than that the game runs basically like a interactive movie

That's what I was thinking. He may have had good intentions, but the way it's worded is that he's upset there's an easy way to get through the game. I get he's saying "I hate that you have no consequences for how badly you performed if you can survive this room," but an infinitely spinning death trap that just makes you reset the puzzle if you die isn't what I'd call a positive feature. To me, Shadow of the Tomb Raider does it best. It has combat difficulty and puzzle difficulty. That way you can determine what you want the challenge to be in and go from there.

Yeah but his point is that those universally difficult challenges are part of what defines God of War/Resident Evil. If that type of difficulty is not something that the average gamer likes then that's fine they don't need to play the game. I _hate_ inventory management so I don't play RE, but I would never expect the developers to remove such an integral part of the game simply to appeal to me and those like me. That would be like if Dark Souls let everyone fast roll, or if The Binding of Isaac let you pick your items, or if Spelunky removed one hit deaths. If these games did this but to make up for it they added a scaling difficulty on another aspect of the game, the resulting game would _not_ be Dark Souls or The Binding of Isaac or Spelunky. It would be something else.

​@@Scroolewse not entirely, its one thing to change something and its another to make it easier. you can make inventory management be a crucial part of RE but have difficulty levels give differing amount of management difficulty. to use your examples a easy mode for dark souls could reduce threshold for fast roll, this way you can equip more armor before fat rolling but you still can't fast roll while hauling the heaviest armor (without specing into endurance atlest) With binding of issac you could make money drops more plentiful and also increase the selection of items that are purchasable so you can only "partially" choose items (as items available for purchase would still be randomized ofc) not sure what can be done about spelunky tho considering its a platformer which is inherently home to 1 hit game overs. but to my knowledge most people die to simple loss of health instead of spikes and falls so a simple more hp on start in easier mode will do great in easing it up for people who want it. do you know that you can survive a bomb if you have more than 11 hp? very few things in the game are actually 1 hit ko afaik

@@keeparguing611 My point is that removing these things would fundamentally change the game. You could make levels to it as you give examples for here but what happened in RE and GoW was not like that, they pretty much removed inventory management and they pretty much removed platforming sections. When they take something that they don't feel like balancing out between difficulties and just remove it because they don't want casual gamers to be forced to do something actually challenging and just remove _that_ is the issue. Also Spelunky 2 has plenty of ways to be OHK'd. Spikes are the most common since they are everywhere but there's also the jellyfish, growing blocks, clams, teleporter mistakes and probably a few others I'm forgetting.

@@Scroolewse And there's a problem with allowing a difficulty slider to let more people get past those parts? I'd be fine with an easy mode or difficulty slider just for that to let more people play RE that are horrible with/dislike inventory management so they get more slots. Again, much like how Shadow of the Tomb Raider's exploration had its own difficulty slider divorced from the combat difficulty slider. This keeps everyone happy imo.

Harder difficulties should make the whole game harder instead of just making enemies stronger and tankier. There's no problem on existing easy modes for those who just want a good story, but hard modes should do things like decreasing inventory space, make platforms and hazards move faster, and maybe mess around with puzzles like removing certain clues. Games should be acessible for everyone, but they should also give the option for those who want a challenge.

It would have been nice to have more choice in what order we did the 2 lords/fortress after Castle D, and inventory should have been a bit less forgiving. Some more agency and risk would have been nice. I was content with how it was, though. The most enjoyable of the modern RE games IMO.

It isn't called DOOM 4 though, it's just called DOOM. If it had a number on it that would make things much easier but it doesnt and it doesnt make much sense for _us_ to be the ones that attach a number to it. So aside from numbering it the easiest way to identify it is the year it was released.

From what I can tell, Mayo tends to have a few good reasons to dislike a game which unfortunately results in him naming off a bunch of problems that said game doesn't have at all to further justify that dislike. It happens a lot with God of War. Like, the idea that God of War has an issue where all areas look the same or that there are no puzzles are both objectively wrong arguments. Unless you want to make the claim that Helheim, Midgard, and Alfheim look anything alike.

It does seem to be a pattern that mayo sees a few genuine problems and then feels he has to paint the picture that the whole game is as bad as he sees those problems to be. As a result it just makes a lot of the criticism come off like its made in bad faith, like he doesn't WANT to see any good

So I know I'm probably gonna sound dumb in writing this, but if I could go back and make a change to RE Village, I would do one simple thing: Lighten the railroaded linearity of how to progress through the game. Here's what I would do: - Intro, entrance to the village, everything before you meet the Duke or so, will remain. - Once you meet the duke, he gives you the key and you can then tackle the four houses in any order you want. Or at the very least, make it so you can take on three of the four houses in any order, but always do the factory and Miranda's ritual site last. - Chris and his team only appear once you hit the third house you picked. If you go to the doll house, they'll have appeared just as you exit the baby chase and flee once the dolls start attacking. If you go to the castle, they'll appear at the chapel and be forced to scatter when you go for the dagger. If you go to the factory, they'll be somewhere near the tank and leave to fight the soldats. - You always encounter Chris at the last house, he reveals what's going on, the house's lord appears to attack. - Some of the bosses change depending on the order you do them in, and if you fight them last. If you do the castle last, Chris brings out a makeshift gunship to fight the dragon. If you do the resevoir last, Chris brings out a small boat with a rocket launcher to fight the fish. The doll house remains unchanged; if you do it last, Chris simply gets shoved through a door and gets locked out of the fight. If you do the factory earlier, Heisenberg's fight changes (not sure how it would change though). - Regardless of order, you will always face Miranda last, and the game continues as normal. I know it's not perfect, but it's a rough idea of what I figure could make Village feel a little more like other RE games. Hope Under the Mayo finds this.

I would also add giving Ethan the ability to absorb the Fungus clusters/Super Shroom goo/MegaMethycyte as a way to heal himself(and something like his fingers and the other thing)for the cost of no healing later or slooooow recharge for these healing pools to tell that there is something off with Ethan even earlier in the game. maybe even make some sort of upgrade system with the goop that allows you go get armoured(better resistnace), get gauntlets(better shove and parry) clawed hands for new melee type and maybe even a tendril thing. make use of the REsident Evil framchise and the underused idea of a Good Guy BOW!

I kinda had the same idea, but I would change a lot more to be honest. First, I would not kill the villagers and Luisa's house would be the main area, you would always go back there after fighting a lord Second, no Rose in jars bullshit, Miranda got her and she is doing crazy shit with your baby in her underground lab. Of course, the lab is protected and can only be accessible through special medallions that each lord carry. With the last topic, that's where the game would go on, fighting the lords and getting their respective medallions to get to Miranda. From there you could chose what lord you would visit. I would also improve story and world building, specially with Miranda, she's obviously a important figure to the village, so I would address that, and I would change the intro, there is so many plot holes that need to be fixed. Forth, change the inventory management, or should I say, create one. Of course, from all of my points the game would need a drastic change and would definitely need 1 or 2 years of development, but I garentee it would be a satisfying experience, at least one you would expect from RE games

@4 These characters we're simply not intended to be in Tekken 7. Only season 1 was confirmed which by the end of S1 the game was so popular and well received that we got 3 more seasons afterwards. We got new moves, new stages and characters which is someting we usually only get for the next game. What really *ruined* tekken 7 is 2D characters.

@4 Tag 2 almost killed the franchise, which is why they also released something like Revolution (f2p tekken) to bring more players. Also Tekken 7's budget is tiny compared to say Tekken 6 or even Tag 2. I don't know about Harada saying legacy char being free but I know for sure they weren't supposed to be in Tekken 7. Then again the only legacy characters I like are Anna, Kuni and Armor King the rest can eat shit. Also laziness? You know Tekken 7 is the only Tekken we have that has a Frame data available right? @4 Fighting games have very small playerbase they have to make money somehow. Tekken 7 is 4 years old (6 years old if you count arcade release) and its still fun to this day. Tag 2 on the other hand died within a year (barely even played at EVO). 2 bad tekken games? there's more than 2 bad tekken games and T7 ain't one of em. Gameplay and balancement should always come first for fighting games. The only thing that T7 lacks is simple game modes for casuals. As for people who wants better customization I say Tekken should completely remove customization from their game and bring back 3P outfits. Atleast I wouldn't have to deal with some retarded outfit with a random deer head. I guess we like Tekken for different reasons. I like Tekken for the gameplay and competitiveness and you like Tekken for whatever it is, story mode or some shit.

I remember the original System Shock had a bunch of different difficulty levels, which was great for choosing what sort of experience you wanted: if you hated combat, you could make the enemies into wimps. If you didn’t care about the cyberspace minigames or puzzles, you could turn the difficulty right down on them.

People these days complain about the controls, but IMO being suddenly blasted by hitscan enemies while struggling with the controls just added to the horror. When studios see the wide audience that a game like that pulls in they learn from it and replicate what exactly it was that allowed the game to reach such a wide audience. It's important to note that publishers dont give two fucks how much the people that bought the game like it the only thing that really matters is that they bought it at all.

I have some friends that don't play videogames too much but love TLOU 1 and 2 and the newest GoW game. It's funny because they'll play and finish 1 game per year at most, besides playing sports games, and then they'll tell me how amazing those games they play are and try to lecture me on what makes a good videogame. Their only points tend to be shit related to the plot and how C I N E M A T I C they are. I'd rather watch movies than pay 60 dollars to play a pretend-movie.

I know 8 is generally well-received but I think 7's return-to-form and the critical praise of RE2R should have told them everything about what people want out of this franchise. I just love love love your videos. I completely agree and that was my first impression after playing RE8 for a few hours ; it is capcom's attempt to de-gamefy RE and cover it up with high production values and amazing graphics. I still liked RE8, but it's a serious step down from RE2:R and RE7, especially when it comes to gameplay mechanics that demand the players attention and focus. A shame and I hope this game sells less the RE7(already at over 10 mill!) So that Capcom gets the massage that we want the RE that THEY want to make, not the ones they think OTHERS want to play (RE5, RE6, RE8)

I enjoyed GoW 2018 but I can understand the complaints. What you want is developers to consider difficulty scaling outside numbers games. To me this should be accomplished two ways. 1.) puzzle difficulty scaling. Curse of Monkey Island stands out to me on this. Being a point and click everything is basically an item order puzzle. It had two difficulties to it though, one more casual and one requiring more intricate solutions. 2.) increase difficulty of combat to AI tweaks and additional move sets. Mega man Zero figured this one out plus Monster Hunter series. These type of tweaks reduce sponge enemies from happening to increase difficulty. I’m fine with games being more narrative driven, which is why the linear pathing happens.

@@shinbakihanma2749 I was a fan of GoW 1 and especially GoW 2. GoW3 narratively was absolutely dumb to me, that was where they really started focusing on the buzzword of HOPE and acting like Zeus was all corrupted by the Pandora Box. Was glad to see the Underworld not depicted like just Brimstone he’ll though. GoW 2018 narratively was good in my opinion. World design was fun to me with the central lake and the surrounding areas. Leviathan Axe versus Chaos blades in terms of move sets was good, combat felt more like the original trilogy with the blades and yet the axe still had uses by the end. Most the series I didn’t think alternate weapons were well balanced, this time felt better. Criticisms are to be had of course. Bonus content outside the Valkyrie fights just bores me - turning the dwarven realm into a labyrinth and the fire realm into an arena was a bit of a waste. Enemy and especially boss variety was not great, I don’t think the series will ever escape the archetypes popularized in the first game. Some travel was a bit more inconvenient then others. If the games I played I put it below GoW2 which will remain my favorite. The games I haven’t played I have watched let’s plays on at some point. Mobile games and Ascension strike me as the weakest with GoW3 maybe I have a lower opinion of just because I think the writing in it absolutely sucks. The encounter with Cronos in that game looks well done overall though.

But gameplay, or level design or combat isn't a priority, which is what I knew you'd say. Everyone who enjoys crappy games always says the story when asked why they like that game. The same thing happens when I ask people why do they like that shitty Hellblade game. They say meaningless things like the story or the "sounds". Which makes no sense. My point is that there's no way a fan of the actual God of War games would remotely enjoy "God of War" 2018, for the simple fact that the 2018 game has absolutely nothing to do with the God of War games - not from a gameplay, level design, combat, etc. standpoint. This game has none of the identity of the actual God of War games. It's not a God of war game. It merely shares the name, and main character, yet even he is completely different. He might as well be a completely differently character. That's why I'm saying what I say. But thank you for responding to my question nonetheless.

It's clear that narrative is the primary reason you enjoy this recent God of War game, as well as the primary reason you enjoyed the series. Narrative is the very first thing you mention. Yeah, you mention combat and levels, but there's no real meaning behind your points when you did. You went into the points about narrative. Gameplay, level design, combat and the various things that gave the series it's very identity are things that are clearly not that important to you. Narrative is your main concern as to why you play these games, which is why you enjoyed that crap 2018 game. No fan of the god of war series would enjoy a game named God of War that has nothing to do with the god of war series. Thanks for responding though.

I mean how could two completely unrelated games, that were developed for entirely different genres and in completely different countries, have affected each other whatsoever? If your argument is that gaming in general is becoming less sophisticated in order to appeal to a broader audience...then yeah, that's been going on for a while. Triple A titles, for years now, have been made with this in mind. Difficulty in Combat is the most common way that difficulty is presented in most big titles. As far as the specifics for these two games goes, I'm not seeing the connection. The criticism of GOW and its difficulty levels especially. What exactly is the problem with combat being the only affected variable? Combat is THE main type of gameplay. So 80% of your experience will change with any given setting. Not only that, but it'll change in a fundamental way since higher difficulties also change enemy spawns and types within encounters. Saying that you aren't rewarded for better performance, and presuming that you can just play as sloppily as you want is also just flat out wrong. It's a completely different kind of action game than the originals, and can't be judged as worse based on direct comparisons to what is a differently designed game. It's about using all the moves at your disposal to deal with encounters as efficiently as possible; with the resource management of health and magic being self contained within each encounter, rather than being spread throughout a level. Sure, I guess you could just spam R1 the entire time if you're good at not getting hit (Btw I'd invite anyone to try this on "Give me a challenge"). But thats exactly the same as using SSG/Ballista for an entire arena in Doom Eternal; yeah you can beat an encounter that way, but you won't be nearly as efficient as if you took advantage of all of you're tools. And to say that the rest of the game isn't engaging seems disingenuous. Yeah, there aren't any reflex puzzles ala the spinning blades of GOW 1 (I'd like to see anyone who actually likes those tbh). The puzzles in new GOW are more cerebral, they're engaging in a different way than the straight "Pass/Fail" platforming of the original. While they may not be brain busters, neither was anything from the original games. Everyone can understand "push a box to a specific spot in order to not die from the floor spikes", but not everyone has the reflexes to do it perfectly (which is what the oringial demanded in all of its puzzles). That kind of stuff can be a dead stop for a lot of people. So why is having something like "Give me a story" such an insult? For Villages sake, I can't really dispute many of your criticisms. Yes, the level design is very linear. Yes, I think the game would be better if inventory management was a thing. Despite that, I still enjoy the game for what it is. It's a greater than the sum of it's parts kind of situation. The tone of the game, and it's atmosphere are big factors for me. Things I know not everyone seems to even consider when talking about the game, but they're entirely valid parts of the whole. Still the connection to GOW 2018 is tenuous, at best. On a meta level, about games in general, I suppose maybe there's something there. You could make the same arguments while picking two completely different games out of a hat as well. Ironically, the original GOW was praised for exactly the thing you claim has ruined the new game, being it's accessibility and "pick up and play" nature.

You completely misunderstood the comparison then. Both GOW and RE are established franchises that both had challenging gameplay that rewarded the player for playing carefully and creatively, while managing resources. Their different genres arent nearly as relevant to the discussion as their similar design philosophies. Even when RE4 came out, and the series shifted focus towards more action than puzzle solving and exploration, it still challenged the player as far as resource management and prioritizing targets go. The point is, there was challenge in those games, and that challenge came from interesting mechanics and encounters, which were only possible given the resource management and competent play that the game REQUIRES the player to do though out the entire game. Mechanically, the GOW reboot is much less demanding of the player at any one difficulty level. And RE8 is barely a game for most of it. If you like RE8 solely for the atmosphere and narrative, you were never the target audience for RE. They pandered to people like you to the detriment to the people that liked the franchise in the first place, and they did so by dumbing it down though out the board. The combat is barely present for a good chunk of the game, there's no inventory management and the exploration and puzzle solving is laughable, almost a parody of RE games. Also, if the games atmosphere is supposed to give off this vibe of uneasiness and tension, shouldn't the gameplay reflect that? The game part of a game can add to the atmosphere. DOOM does that, DMC does that, RE does that. RE8 doesn't have atmosphere, nor does it have a cohesive theme. It has pretty visuals, some fun cutscenes, and barely any music. That's it.

World design and the immersion player agency creates is infinitely more cinematic than being forced out of any choice or interaction. At that point it feels more like performance theatre than a grand adventure and enemies and characters become paper thin puppets instead of part of the world.

I've played through RE:8 twice on hardcore, and I can say despite the fact that I enjoyed myself I agree with every point you've made in both your videos about RE:8 even on hardcore the game wasn't very challenging except for a few very spongy drawn-out bosses. It's sad to see the series go from the triumphant return of the RE:2 remake to this. Not to say 7 was a bad game, but it is far from perfect especially toward the end where it really starts to drag. Hopefully, this streamlined boring approach to game development dies out, but I doubt that's going to happen in the triple-A scene. Thank God for indie developers

Long comment, but bear with me. Got a lot of thoughts on this topic. Honestly, this kind of thing has been happening for over a decade now. Most of my favourite series were casualized for mass appeal a long time ago. Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Silent Hill, DMC (for a time), Titanfall, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta. Even a series like Animal Crossing has reached this point. Not to be snide, but it is a little ironic to me that GoW is one of your primary pieces of evidence here considering GoW is the reason this kind of thing happened to games like NG, DMC and Castlevania. They chased its QTEs, simple inputs and focus on spectacle to the detriment of their series' specialties. That's not to say it doesn't suck to see it occur in GoW's case, though. Kratos was arguably one of the last standing stylish action protagonists before he was turned into Axe-Joel. Once a series gets big enough to the point that it's competing with billion-selling AAA games, the devs are kind of stuck. Now they have to make sure ANYONE can enjoy their game, to maximise sales and ensure they even have a future. It's an inevitable thing the moment a niche genre or series gets put into the spotlight. I think by this point I've just accepted that it's the way of AAA games, which is why I knew to temper my expectations with Village, and thus ended up enjoying it a lot. Still, it stung to go back into REmake right afterwards to finally finish it and be reminded that I'd never see another environment like the Spencer mansion.

I allways thought that developers should put in extra effort to alter majour mechanics of the game between the "grandma wanted to give it a go" difficulty mode as well as the rest of the game, or at least find a way to allow for more complicated systems in all of the other difficulties that can be circumvented if the player just wants a chill story experience, without making the game braindead for everybody else. The changes would only be for the baby mode or assist mode, and would only exist in the name of accessibility, while allowing for people who dont need the easier difficulty modifiers to have a complete and nuanced experience. A good example of whay I am talking about is celeste's assist mode, which is a collection of tweakable settings, and is very clearly communicated to the player as something thay will tarnish the intended experience of the game so that somebody who can handle the game without it wont use it. Things like Assist mode are very important in games, as some people have disabilities that make the original experience impossible, meaning they wont physically or mentally be capable of playing the game in the intended way, and so its not entirely fair to those people to lock them out of a game that they might really want to try, because they have some sort of disability that they didnt ask for in the first place. And to accomodate for this, celeste's assist mode allows you to make very specific aspects of the game a bit easier or a lot easier so people who say, arent able to produce the lighting fast reaction times that the harder levels in celeste require to slow down the game's speed just enough so that they are able to pull off the various moves required for sucess. This allows for everybody to get to have fun without making the experience braindead for everybody else. The assist mode settings arent binary either, the degree to which you make things easier for yourself is given as a wide range of options, meaning you dont have to play something for people who are literally im a coma if you only need to give yourself a few extra secconds to make button inputs because you have some physical issue in your hands that makes pressing buttons too fast is impossible. While player accountability is extremely important and is one of the key features of a well designed game, I also strongly believe that games should have clearly labeled accesibility options, or a "baby mode" difficulty (however acessibility options are better than entire difficulty modes), as some people either physically are uncapable of playing the game in the intended way, or maybe just want to experience the story and see the various levels. But these modes and options should not effect any of what makes the game interesting for more capable players. So in the case of resident evil village, instead of designing the levels to be braindead and uninteresting like castle dimitresque, they should be designed like an actual resident evil map, requiring exploration and spatial awareness, while maybe giving players a treasure map or something, that tells you where all of the important items are and where they need to be used on the baby mode difficulty, so that they can still have their braindead, easy to digest, experience, without fundamentally altering the game to be less demanding. Maybe you could have more inventory space only on the easiest mode, allowing for the intense decision making of the earlier games to be left unruined for everybody else

While I can't comment on GoW because I didn't play it, I did begin to feel some of these elements since 2013. I don't know if it's since The Last of Us, but I do feel our games are becoming even more about the "engagement" instead of the brilliance of game design, more attracted to movie-like elements to put in to appear clever and be "respected". When a simple indie platformer makes me say more things about its design compared to modern AAA games, then I do believe something is wrong. When a Nintendo game full of life and color is more interesting to play than the typical brown and gray experience, that's a problem.

I ran out of inventory space several times in Resident Evil Village. But then again I also didn't sell any weapons and that included the pre-order pistol weapon. I only sold any weapons when I got stuck at the final boss with only one healing item and low ammo for most of my guns except the sniper rifle, so I sold the extra guns to boost my guns stats more and then that helped me win. Was still a bit tricky only having one healing item though.

Having played Doom Eternal a lot I've really been able to help refine my opinion on difficulty in fps games. I had always known that it was bullshit that going to veteran in COD or Legendary in Halo were bullshit difficulties because the ai just become aimbots and deal more damage to you, killing you in two bullets with both cod and Halo but in Halo they also become spongier. Where Doom Eternal comes into the equation here: I knew these things were bullshit yet I had no real basis for what should be changed to make the highest difficulties harder, until I played Eternal - Eternal showed me that ai could be made to be tougher, hit harder and aim better sure but that they could also be made to smarter in how they move and attack the player and I really do think that more fps games should do that for their difficulties. Ditch just making them kill you in two bullets and make it so the ai play smarter than they do on easy and sure give them a health and damage bump up but don't let that be the sole measurement of difficulty

2 bullets is a huge overstatement for halo's legendary difficulty. Yes the enemies kill you extremely fast, but it doesn't make legendary bullshit or unplayable. This is coming from someone who has beaten ghost recon wildlands on the hardest difficulty in ghost mode (think of ghost mode as ultra nightmare), where the enemies do kill you in literally 2 bullets. Not to mention the campaign is 40+ hours. You need a lot of patience to do that. Also, if you're not paying attention or just bad, the enemies in doom eternal can kill you just as fast as they do in halo on legendary, if you play on nightmare.

@@infinitedeath1384 I play exclusively on Nightmare in Eternal and that feels way more fair than legendary does. People say that Doom Eternal is restrictive but Halo legendary really does feel restrictive because it heavily pushes you into using noob combo to deal with elites and Halo 3 brutes otherwise you're in for a lot of dumping bullets into shields hoping they'll break before the other ai unload rapid fire plasma. Especially with Reach you really get to see how nutty the ai are on legendary because even a plasma pistol has the fire rate of a plasma rifle and god help you if an ai has an explosive weapon since as soon as they see you fuel rods and concussion rounds are coming your way and they don't stop till the break of dawn. Halo 3 actually did something I liked with going up from normal to heroic which was adding in new enemy placements but unfortunately they're pretty much limited to just sniper jackals

@@lllXanderlll Now this conversation is getting interesting! I love halo a lot, and doom eternal. Yes the enemies do feel unfair, when they have explosive weapons. That is why I came up with a solution to deal with them in halo reach. Hide behind a corner in a doorway and let them come through, then let them get within melee range. That will force them to hit you, rather than shoot you. So you can just easily charge up a plasma pistol, and get a headshot. I save my plasma grenades for brutes that have fuel rod guns. Just use plasma pistol, then aim at their left shoulder (your right) and throw the grenade. I've found that to be a reliable way to stick them. That is how I was able to survive a full set in halo reach firefight, on legendary without dying. Elites are actually easier, since you can noob combo them. Oh and you can noob combo brutes in halo 3, except for the chieftans I believe (the ones with the gravity hammers).

@@infinitedeath1384 These are good strats and yeah you can noob combo the chieftains in Reach and 3 but you gotta knock off their helmet first and in 3 you have to deal with their invincibility power up, they seem to love popping it when their shields go down. All in all having done Halo Reach, ODST, 3 and 4 solo legendary I can definitely say I'd never do them again willingly but I'll happily boot up a new nightmare save lmao

I'm guessing you're probably around the same skill level as me, since I also exclusively play on nightmare, and I would bet you've done feats just as impressive as mine. Yeah, also in halo reach, you have to deal with brutes and elites with that armor lock ability, which imo is even worse than the invincibility tech the brutes in halo 3 have. That's because they can actually kill you with it, whereas in halo 3, if you try to run down a brute with invincibility, it'll just launch him away.

This game is a lot more similar to GOW4 than you'd expect. -Semi open world -Metroidvania elements, but only for optional treasure hunting -Smooth combat without long-term consequences -Basically a walking simulator when you're not fighting enemies (no platforming, no ACTUAL puzzles) -Ultra Hard difficulty that just adjusts some sliders to the max -High health bar enemies -Camera System that does not work well for the combat.

I love that you're the only one who really delves into a game and what makes it great, and also how sequels ruin their brand identity. Keep it up Mayo, also could you please let me know when you're stating your opinion, it's hard to follow. :)

Your points sound legit, but I strongly disagree with the conclusions. To me RE Village was a game about exploration with very few combat encounters. Hell, the whole Donna's segment is completely devoid of combat, being all about exploration. Wells, locked houses, treasures to find and 100% clear the map into pure blue... That's what the whole game was about. Methodical search, which player absolutely has to do playing on Hardcore anyway. Hence the whole difficulty argument, which has NOTHING to do with the actual combat difficulty, but rather brings scarceness to the table, forcing player to not rush into fights without looking around thoroughly. Fighting a few lycans or a bunch of moroaica s is never a problem, no matter the difficulty, but collecting enough resources actually is. And that's what the game is all about: searching every nook and cranny for precious... anything.

Nailed it with the "bullshit extreme difficulty" thing in general. Doesn't change the core game design and glass cannon vs damage sponges isn't fine tuned, satisfying challenge.
