How Good Is An Oztent REALLY? Set Up and Detailed Review

asimplyfab.life/ We set up the Oztent RV3 Lite including the Modular Panel System. We have questions... How long does it take to set up? How good is the quality? What do we like about it? What can be improved upon?
While it is marketed as a 30-second tent - and has a party-piece frame that has bragging rights on the campsite - it will come as no surprise that it takes a bit longer than that to set up. We go from a closed tent bag to full readiness including the front Modular Panel Set.
One major design flaw is that the tent bag is NOT waterproof. I find this a strange decision for a tent that lives its life on your roofrack!
The RV3 Lite is the 'lighter' option from Oztent. It is made from a thinner polyester-based material as opposed to canvas. The total package comes in at around 19 kg which is a kilo or two lighter than the RV3. It also comes with a flysheet which requires some additional pegging and staking out.
It is a good quality tent, although you may expect that considering the price. Is it perfect? Not quite. There are a couple of things that concern me as well as a couple of design decisions that I have not gotten my head around...
Hope you enjoy this lengthy one. Let us know your thoughts and experiences!
Thanks for watching!

Another cracking video!!.. the black flaps that extend out at the bottom I believe are to put rocks, sand or snow on depending on when & where you are... but also serve to shed water away from the footprint.. If you peg the bottom of the doors it will stop the need for fancy footwork. All round not too bad! Keep the vids coming... love them!!

It looks well made. Regarding the zip, I guess all you can do is zip it up first then peg it and tension it. I nearly went for one of those but got the ARB awning with extension but it means I can't drive the vehicle, this is where yours has an advantage.

Thanks for your detailed set-up video and thoughtful observations. I'm looking to buy an oztent to use in Kruger Park; (the KNP bungalows are now too expensive!) Deciding whether to buy the RV3 lite / original canvas. That living area with mozzie proof screens seems a great feature.

Glad it was helpful 👍Here are a couple more observations for you: We are in winter here in southern Spain and I am now looking at the dewpoint every day (never used to think about it 😅). The underside of the front tent does get covered in water droplets and at certain stages (below 5 degrees C) even the inner tent gets condensation, mostly around the alu construction. Not sure how this is in a canvas tent - or any tent for that matter. I think if you are in high winds consistently I would go for the canvas. This one makes too much of a racket to sleep comfortably and shakes a lot. Notably, the flysheet that has a similar consistency to a bin liner but is pretty solid so far... Then again, I guess you will have slightly better heat management in the Lowveld summer with a fly (there isn't one on the canvas). If weight is a consideration then the weight-saving here is a couple of kilograms only. I have to say I do miss Kruger hugely! And we had an incredible time in Botswana (Botswana self-drive in one week). Hope to do Nam/Bots/Zim next year 😎🤘. Thanks for the comment. Keep rollin'

The Oztent are great. i have now experience with the light version. I owned 2 RV 4 and one RX 5. And special the RV i find great. You can put up the RV i a lot of configuration. The RX is one complete tent. Thank you for this setup video.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I think the biggest plus point is the flexibility where you can put it up in a number of different ways. And the quality is there as well!

Good review guys, like Vic ( in the comments) said zipping before pegging is a good idea. Also it might be a good idea to get a metal detector to find your pegs back when leaving. I have experienced heavy weather once when we had to hang on the tents cross bar to stop it from flying away, but staying dry during a thunderstorm like that gives a kick like no other, good memories!

I agree they are not the best in windy conditions. I've found that rotating the tent so the back faces the oncoming winds works best. But who wants to keeps moving a tent once you've set it once. Overall I still think its one of the best touring tents out there.
@ASimplyFabLife
@ASimplyFabLife Год назад
It's one of the better ones - yes (if you get the heavier canvas version). The trouble is the vast flat sheets of fabric that aren't curved to deflect some of the wind... the price for more space inside... 😉

Takes me up to an hour to set up my RV3 properly solo especially if there is any wind, the tent without the awning and side panels takes 30 seconds without pegging it, Camping is not a race though but if its raining you can get the main tent up pretty quick, I have had my RV3 and RV1 for over 3 years but preferer the canvas! it takes me so long because when I sit under the awning I keep adjusting the tent and poles. lol.

We had the RV1 before and the zipper was tight. Not as tight as yours though. You could consider less spacing between the legs of the tent… we loved our RV. Never had any issues with the roof not being waterproof. However we had condensation on the frame inside the tent, but that was easily dealt with by fitting the fly sheet.

Cheers for the feedback! It's a great tent, and easy to use. I am just watching how it will hold up for longer term use. 👋😎😀

Put the bag over the tent when you pack up then flip to do up zip, when setting up unzip bag take out poles and pegs then flip the bag upside down and remove bag, this makes it quicker and easier to put up and pack away.

Update on my Oztent RV3 lite. Day 4 of a 42 day camping trip. Has been some light rain (more drizzle than rain), but constant for about 4 hours. No wind. The tent itself is leaking everywhere. Bed, pillow .. wet. Won't dry out in this weather. Drips all over the place. I have 19 ropes holding this thing down, keeping the fly off the tent etc etc. I'm in a quandary because I either keep going with my trip north, or give it up and go home. I won't survive in a leaky tent. Biggest purchase error. Don't do it. I have had $50 tents that did not leak. I will be seeking a refund as soon as I can, bit hard when you're on the road . Destroyed my trip away, very disappointed. I don't know if the canvas version doesn't leak, I may switch to that, but right now I have to go in the tent every 10mins and wipe off the drips coming through.. very disappointed...

It’s a tricky one isn’t it. You need a sleeping space and a shelter space that you can stand up in. I personally can’t afford these fancy tents so what I went for was an ex military crew shelter tent which goes on the side of the Defender, and then a set of four canvas tarps with telescopic poles to form the living area. The tarps clip together with carabiner hooks so there are gaps in between the tarps, and they clip onto the Defender with carabiner hooks too. The whole setup cost me maybe £400. The crew shelter is thick canvas and absolutely waterproof. The tarps for the living area are also thick canvas and waterproof but of course there are gaps around the edges. Not too much of a problem though as with the military pegs the whole thing is really robust in strong winds and I can clip it all onto the Defender which anchors it all. It’s not sophisticated but it does work and is very straightforward to set up. No zips or seams or anything like that to go wrong. The Oztent looks good but as you say it will be interesting to see how it lasts with continual use.

Sounds like a good set up you got there 👍Thanks for the comment Yes sir - I'm very curious to see how the old Oztent holds up

You should be able to make the tent up with the side panels still attached and still get it in the bag as long as you leave the front panel off and the poles out of the tent bag. Your welcome 😎

Fantastic HONEST review of this tent... Here are my thoughts.. Owners manual was written by a four year old... Do not rely on it. the '30 second tent' - I wish they would stop saying that.. If you lift up the tent and place the arms in place, 30 seconds.. if you don't want it to fall down at the slightest breeze and peg it out, put the fly up, put the front poles up.. allow at lease an hour... Seriously. It's a great tent - though over priced for others on the market - Just don't be be fooled by how long it takes to set up. Marketing rubbish. And another thing. If you get the 'extended wall kit', don't expect it to be water proof - it's not. Don't leave anything in there that can be damaged by water if it rains. I made that mistake. 'Water resistant'? mmmm Not sure. Not trying to turn you off it, but I get irate when I buy something based on 'fact' and find out I have been scammed.. I hate that. Just tell me the truth and let me make the decision. Footnote: The guy from 'Oztent' that did the ad on this tent has never been camping in this tent for 43 days like I have.. I bet not one day... just say'in.... They want to sell tents... Big thanks to this review which is far more honest that others.. Listen to him...

Yessir! The main drag between St Tropez and St Maxime is less than 100 yds away (only road coming through - there's a reason they like to chopper in and out of Trop!😂😆). You kinda get used to it...

zippers have been around a very very very very long time.. maybe educate yourself on how to use them without breaking them... i was expecting to see a zipper break at some point during this video the way you treated them... And if it did.. it was nothing against the tent itself...

Thanks for the comment dude😂😂😂😂 Maybe take a look at this video after a year of usage on the road, it might be educational to find out if the zippers broke - but only if you're very very very very interested ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dEoRGrqSOLM.html
