Great video. I've been using the s5ii for a little over a month. Nobody is talking about the photography side of it. I'm an amateur but I quickly noticed how great it is at taking photos.
Tossing up between this and A7IV as an upgrade from my Nikon Z30. I was leaning towards the Sony because of the resolution, the autofocus and great high ISO performance. The S5ii is no slouch though. This was really informative.
I just got my Lumix s5 mark 2, tried to take pictures but they always seems flat, would appreciate if you can share the settings and how you color grading, and software to use I'm a total newbie at that
Excellent video,James. I actually bought the S5ii mainly for stills photography so I really appreciate videos on the camera that focus on the photo side of things. I use the 50/1.8 and the 85/1.8 a lot but I’ve been thinking of adding the 35/1.8 so thanks for featuring it in the video.
Thank you! The 35mm is really great, I also like the Lumix 24mm too. Either one would make a good side angle option in your set up! Thank you for watching.
How's it doing when using flash? There's not much flash options out there yet for it. I'm nervous with using it for stills because lack of support in that area. Also how's the overall AF speed when tracking ppl?
@@DonnieGQX I had no real issues when shooting with flash. AF tracking speed is also pretty good. Not quite up to Canon or Sony standards but well on its way.
Im considering the the s5ii. I started off in photography with Panasonic so i have a soft spot for the brand. My main reasom for wanting to switch potentially (aside from price compared to my canon set up) is the real time LUT. I adored the fuji film simulations when i shot with that for a few years. And now you can make your own recipes or purchase others and put them in to your s5ii and you've got yourself completely customizable/unique jpeg looks sooc. I think that is a beautiful thing. And love that it works for photos as well as video. So yeah its like having a full frame Fuji! Beautiful stuff.
I have an S5 iix and absolutely love the quality of the photos, both jpeg and raw. The auto focus system is amazing. I shoot high speed waterskiing stuff just the other day and AF was incredible.
YESSSS I was waiting for someone to do this! Thanks so much! I want the S5 II as my main video camera but it will have to play backup duty for photos. Seems like it's well up to the task. I was a bit worried because someone told me the experience taking photos on the S5 was horrible so I was hoping it was fixed on the S5II.
I have an s5 and the experience shooting on it is great. Even on the original the AF is actually fast. Biggest issue is Sony and Canon use different descriptors for their AF and folks expect lumix to do the same. Example is what this reviewer said: human detect works better on face a d eye than eye detect. Not the users fault. Expectation for settings is awkward
Totally agree, I think LUMIX need to be clearer about the difference between human and face/eye. Even after reading the manual it’s not clear why I’m getting considerably better performance in Human mode.
Great video. I watched it and also the the comparison with R6 ii and a7 iv multiple times. I'm considering S5 ii for photography (rather shorter focal lengths landscape, nature, outdoor portrait, street, travel, no sports/birds). R6 II is amazing but the cost of ecosystem including lenses is hard to justify for me as a non-professional. I'm deciding between a7 IV and s5ii. They cost the same now in Switzerland (Sony is very popular here and on sale). Sony has a better lens selection and 33 Mpix but I didn't hear good things about ibis. Sony also has a big selection of bodies so when upgrading one can keep the lenses and have body for a desired purpose. I'm still leaning towards S5 ii even though it has lower resolution because I shoot for fun and the display and UI seem better. The lens selection is more limited than Sony but better than Canon RF options and could grow with the popularity of new Panasonic cameras and Partnership with Leica. The selection of Panasonic bodies is smaller as well, although they seem to be introduced at lower prices which makes it easier to upgrade when new model comes out. I also found rumors about new s1(h/r) body being released soon so I want to wait a few days to see what will happen. Sony definitely wins the ecosystem with support from retailers, local shops and second hand gear in Switzerland. Panasonic seems a little absent/niche in Switzerland. Also Panasonic is priced at eur 2300 for body and 2500 for kit in Germany which means it loses the price advantage as sony body is getting on sale often being it a 2021 model.
Thank you for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the videos! That's definitely a tough call. Could you rent both and see what you think? For photo, as you said, Sony have a few upgrade paths in the A1, A7R cameras etc as well as all the great lenses and more that the Lumix mount has. There's so many advantages to Sony on paper, and they are technically excellent, but after using them they are just not the right cameras for me. That's why I would always recommended trying them out if you can.
Excellent review, man! I’m happy with the photo quality of the S5II, and the 1.8 primes. I’ve already shot a few gigs in the last two months with it, and coming from the A7IV, the files are so much easier to work with in terms of color. The AF can miss every now and then, but so did my Sony. I also shot a short narrative film withe the S5II, and the open gate anamorphic recording is next level. I do agree that Lumix needs to release some more f/1.4 primes with breathing corrections already built in. The way Sigma’s f/1.4 lenses breathe is just not acceptable for me.
@@JustinWilliams-hn2bc Absolutely! Open Gate unlocks the whole sensor area and allows you to crop in whichever way you choose. Not only that, but the extra bump in resolution makes it less problematic to crop when editing in a 4K timeline. As far as I’m aware of, only the GH6 and the XH2 will give you that ability, albeit in a cropped sensor. You can get open gate with the S1 or the S1H, but at this point, they’re going to be more expensive, and will not provide any meaningful upgrades (unless the S1HII is able to shoot in Open Gate 6K60).
Awesome portrait photography session. James, next time It would be nice if you use portrait lenses (50mm, 85mm, 135mm) or one of them. Thank you for your video.
I also have the S5II and it works like beast in human detection for portraits. My only complaint is the slow start up time. I hope Lumix comes out soon with a S1R II!
@@BryanPopeProductions The first start-up takes a few seconds. After that, it starts up quicker. However, if it's off for a while it will take a while to restart.
Thank you, James. I have an S5 + S Pro 50mm 1.4 and I really only care about photography. This video has been the best help with researching the S5ii autofocus capabilities.
Although I understand the attraction of face & eye autofocus, I have yet to use a camera that can do it reliably enough to make it a worthwhile substitute for standard single-point autofocus. This is particularly the case when the distance between you and your subject remains essentially the same. (This includes the escalator shots, BTW.) If the distance changes it takes less than a second to re-focus. Stop down to a reasonable aperture and depth-of-field will take care of any minor errors. All that being said, I love the look of the photos and appreciate the effort that went into this review.
Kasey at camera conspiracies always teases that sigma lenses have no soul and just look clinical, but everything I've seen from these art lenses looks beautiful. I agree with the other commenter - if you can do a video with the 85 art, that would be great. I hope I can borrow or rent one someday (since I really don't shoot portrait enough to justify owning one)
Thank you for your incredibly insightful video on this camera. I've been searching for a video like this for quite some time. I loved the fact you used visual examples. I especially appreciated how you covered various points in photography comprehensively. Most videos that have been watched is people with little to know experience with the quality of glass so it's difficult to fully see the quality that can be produced through photography. I know this is the next camera we will purchase, but didn't really know how to judge the photo aspect until now.
I have an s5 and s5ii arriving soon. The biggest problem with auto focus is exactly what this reviewer said: face and eye work as intended but folks want it to work like human. Switch to human and its pretty nice
Currently shooting with the Lumix S1R (mainly photos, did some wedding filming last year as well) and now I'm even more excited for my S5IIX to come in, looks like it'll be a beast for video aaand a reliable second photo camera - would love to see some low-light photo tests if you get the chance. Great video & amazing portrait shots!
Thank you Sarah! The S5IIX looks incredible. In hindsight I think that would of been the better buy for me. I really hope we see an S1RII also! I did test the S5 II in low light in one of my other videos, very impressive results!
Been looking a video showing the sigma 24mm and a video showing the 35mm being ACTUALLY used. Not only did you show one but both! Thank you for not wasting time showing me 30 min of pixel peeping to show what a lense can do. 🎉🔥🙏💪
Haven’t tried the Z6II but the other two are very compatible. I personally prefer the R6II auto focus and in general for photography. S5II a little better for video in terms of pro video tools in camera and slightly better dynamic range.
Very interesting. Everybody says it’s a great hybrid camera and then proceeds to show off all of the video features. I’ve got an S5iix on preorder, this solidified my confidence that I’m making the right choice.
Thanks James, enjoyed the video, lovely photography. S1R in studio and a couple of M43’s for out and about user. Elinchrome strobes. I watch your video because of the stills and studio aspect, tempted by the S5 as a hybrid but was hoping by holding fire i’d see what others thought. However, although impressed, I may see what’s around the corner deform Lumix. not cos I want the latest and greatest but for the impact of impeded new release on used S5ii. Liking those primes you use though. Thanks again, great work. Oh, i’m not a pro, but have converted my double garage into a great studio. Thanks for making the video, nice job. 👍
Thank you Jasper! There’s a lot going on to achieve the look but the LUT I used was indeed Kinetic LUTs, Kinetic 02 to be specific which is my favourite.
Hey James, Great video. I've really been enjoying the comparisons and now this deeper dive into the s5ii. I am wondering if you can speak to the colour banding/artifact like issue particularly seen in the blonde models hair at 6:00. Your work is great! Thanks :)
Thank you Harrison, really glad you've been enjoying the videos! I'm not sure what's causing that, perhaps it's some of the beauty effects. Will take a look in Resolve and get back to you.
Hi. Thank you for this great video. The S1 was my main camera for photo and video. The quality was great with the lumix s pro 50mm 1.4. But I ended up switching to sony because of the weight of the lumix and the limits of contrast detection. Lumix lenses used to be very expensifs before these 1.8 primes, and sigma lenses were not an option because of the bad afc performance in video. It was my only drawbacks with panasonic. The S5ii is a game changer. I want to have a second body for video work, and I am happy I didn't sell my panasonic gear. Goodbye sony ! I won't miss your menu system, your lack of firmware update, insuffisant stabilization, not so good color science, and your overprice camera body. I can´t wait to play with this small prime lenses. I want to try to do portrait with a 24mm thanks to you now. 😅
Thank you Ted! I was in the same situation as you with with the S1. I loved the ergonomics and image quality of that camera but using it with those heavy lenses genuinely gave me wrist pain! Im glad to hear your sticking with Lumix. Definitely give 24mm a go for portraits! A fun lens for environmental stuff.
@@benja1378 The S Pro 50 1.4 do struggle to focus in AFC mode on my S1 with the last firmware update. Maybe these new lenses have less difficulties to be fast and accurate in AFC 🤷♂️. Let's hope so. The tests I watched with S5ii and the 50 1.4 were great.
So I got the camera for a hybrid I love it for studio and street Photographer. I also shoot bands, and sports. I’ve had auto focus issues also. Maybe user error
@@JamesReader yes, seems to be quite a unanimous finding from what i've seen so far; super useful videos like this with real world useage feedback, thanks for sharing 🤓🤟 The tap to focus option sounds good, I am thinking as a wedding photographer there might be some tricky scenes where that would help loads prior to manual focus as a fair safe. 🤓👍
Hi James, I'm a professional photographer and I shoot pets and portraits. I've been shooting on the Olympus/OM Digital OM1 system for sometime now and really happy with the results from those cameras but wanted to jump to full frame and purchased an S5ii with a 20-70 Lumix pro f2.8. The results are great for images although it is a bit slower to focus than my OM1. Still trying it out hoping for good low light performance and portraits. Just working on figuring out which lenses to purchase. I'm surprised you didn't try any 85 or 105 portrait lenses. Any reason?
Hi Mark, I think you're going to love the S5 II for what you do, are you set to "human" mode in the AF detection settings? I really wanted to try the Lumix S pro 24-70, it looks fantastic. You'll have to let me know how the camera performs for pets. I always seem to gravitate towards wider angle lenses for portraits, but the main reason is I picked up these lenses primarily for video so they were all I had access to at the time.
Great video! Good to see someone focusing on the photo side as well. I'm very much 50/50 hybrid between photo/video. How do you find it in terms of switching dynamically on the fly, lets say if you're doing a photo + video portrait session at the exact same time. Could you grab a v-log clip with the video record button, stop, then fire off a couple raw photos before/after? Or does it require any reconfiguring to do that? My A7 III sort of does this but I have to switch to a custom mode to apply the picture profiles for video, then swap back to manual mode for photos (to remove said picture profile since it does for some reason affect the RAW file) So I'm hoping the S5 II will be more elegant here, and the IBIS looks amazing for video vs the A7 III which I find is really lacking for handheld video.
I found the S5 II to be a pretty great hybrid. I had it set up so M on the mode dial was for photo, and C1 was for video. So just two clicks of the mode dial would swap between. You could probably use a single profile for both photo and video but using shutter angle and VLOG would throw things off for photo settings.
@@JamesReader Thanks for the info 👍 that's similar to how I set it on the A7 III too, worked well. I suppose doing it in one mode is too tricky to solve operation wise at least at the moment. I've not used V-log before (just S-log) but I'm guessing you mean it would under or overexpose the photos a lot when using that for video as a side effect? Even if V-log itself isn't directly affecting the raws in a negative way.
@@JamesReader Just thought I'd share this since it seems like a great way to use it in a hybrid workflow: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0KqrAZd7_CE.html as an alternative to the C1/2/3 buttons.
It looks like you got to tap twice on the face or object to lock the autofocus. With face detection locked mode, hands will not get focused unless they put hands in front of their face.
Very interesting. I thought the reason nobody talked so much about the photos was that the photography af performance of the predecessors was already very good. You say you owned the S1: Do you see a noticable improvement? Also I was curious to see if there was still a difference in AF performance between the Lumix and Sigma lenses, even with PDAF. Thanks for answering that question.
The 1080p 100fps not using PDAF would be good to see in your final review. I go back and forth between photo and video so it's easier for me to shoot high fps video to match the photo side and helps me not require a ND. Moreso that Panasonic hopefully make a firmware update for it.
Would you mind going into more detail and background on your question and comment for this camera regarding matching video and photos? I’m considering purchasing this camera and would like to hear more about the topic you brought up. Thank you!
This is such a great video, I'm getting back into videography and want to learn how to be better with photography this really helped me with picking which lens out of the 2 I should select I recently purchased the S5ii
Thank you Sam! I really love the ergonomics of the R6 MKII, button placement, grip. screen etc. But the output of the cameras are very similar so it’s mainly the fact I’m very comfortable with the system that I choose the Canon. I would definitely suggest renting both
Hi, was interested to watch this video, as everyone agrees, the tendency for everyone to focus solely on video is frustrating. Looking for the follow up full review, is that still coming?
I've jumped ship from Nikon Z6ii to S5ii - Z6iii seems to have dropped the ball on DR and low light, which to me is the whole point of running a full frame system. Hoping to find the C-AF as good as the subject detect modes when using single point and - seems tricky to find reviews by other joystick jockeys.
Hi James, You finished your video saying you would be following up with a complete review of the S5ii, but I cant see ine in your channel. Will you still be doing one? Thank you 😊
great video. I used the S1 and S1R for a year and had to let them go as so so unrelaible with the DFD AF it was making heavy processing as having to take triple or more of every shot and then no confidence we had the shot, and this wasnt in AF-c just AF-s. Colours were supereb and the ergonomics were great, also a shame they dropped the S1 line for the S5 as the higher spec with phase detect would have been great. I also lost a fortune when trying to sell it and they were very hard to sell as well, very poor market for lumix second hand and trade in prices were dreadful but im tempted again with the S5ll ...or maybe i should just stay put and wait for Fuji to fix its again inconsistent AF.
The S1 is one of my favourite cameras ever in terms of ergonomics and image quality. It was just so big and heavy! I’m excited to see what LUMIX do next
I bought the s5 II and I was super excited about the new autofocus. For video, it's on par with the greatest ones. But I think I use 50/50 photo and video and I can tell you why I returned the camera. The system is not snappy at all. First, you have to enable the screen and viewfinder to preview the shutter, aperture and iso. Otherwise, the vf and the monitor behave like an old SLR and don't show you the preview of the SS/A/ISO config. When you activate the live view (I forgot the specific name of the function on Panasonic cameras) and you are in SS less than 1/25 in photo mode, the system gets really laggy. Feels like the processor is weak and doesn't handle the camera operation well. I tried to live with the slow system but I ended up returning the camera. I was excited about the s5 II and think it has great potential. But seems like Panasonic is aiming all their efforts at video only and the photography side of this camera is really weak, compared to sony and canons. I must say that I have an R5 and an RF 24 70 and I'm really bothered by Canon's attitude regarding 3rd party lenses. I'm not a professional and every day I feel like an idiot for having such an expensive kit just for my hobby. I love the R5 and I think it's a great camera to this day. 8k all-I, 45mp. What a camera. But the 1.8 glass is expensive and inferior to their competitors. The S5 II and a Sigma 28-70 would be a nice cost/benefit for my use. But I'll have to stick to my stupidly expensive and huge Canon system or sell everything and go for a Sony a7IV or even an A7C Maybe in the future, if Panasonic gets more focused on photography as well, I might come back. Thanks for the video. I've subscribed to your channel :)
Thank you for watching Bruno! I noticed the same thing regarding exposure compensation in photo as well as the laggy, non responsive screen at lower shutter speeds. I thought it was likely human error on my part, perhaps a wrong setting. Interesting to hear you’re experiencing the same. I have the R5 and completely agree with your view points. The A7IV could be a good move, amazing lens options and excellent image quality. I just personally love the feel and ergonomics of the Canon. I really appreciate you subscribing.
@@JamesReader I had an a7IV already and there's one thing only that I don't like. When you're with the screen flipped and you want to bring the camera quickly to your eyes, the a7IV doesn't change automatically to the VF. You have to close the flippy screen so the sensor can work. Not sure as well if that was a human error on my side but that silly thing made me give up on the Sony, but I'm reconsidering.
@@JamesReaderi think the camera is trying to show you a preview of the final image, and if you are in a 1/8s shutter speed, it will need at least this time to collect light, and updates only every 1/8 of a sec.
Great video mate! I order my Lumix S5ii + 24mm 1.8 + 50mm 1.8 and will be here in 2 weaks... Can you tall us PRESET you use for these photos, also PP and setings for taking them...
Thank you for watching! The S5IIX is the direction I would go for video. The addition of ALL I and external recording via USBC are enough of a reason to pay the extra in my opinion!
Love this video. What batteries do you use to keep the camera running? I want to buy this camera but I can't seem to find a decent way to power it for a few hours unless I buy third party batteries.
Thank you Shanoor! I just have two OEM LUMIX batteries and have found the run time quite good. Perhaps you can power it through power delivery if you need really long run times?
Great video! I also did a quick video expressing my issues with the lag it has when using it as a photo camera. There is a lag when pressing the shutter and when the actual photo is taken. Even more so with flash. Lumix is aware and hopefully can fix this. Are you experiencing any lag? I don’t have any if these issues when using another brand.
Been going through your channel and I’m learning a lot from you, thanks! Why not go all Lumix lens instead of mixing Sigma / Lumix. I’m asking because I’m debating between the Sigma 24 vs the Panasonic 24. Thanks in advance.
Thank you! No particular reason other than I wanted to see how the Sigma performed. I owned the LUMIX 24mm 1.8 and it’s a really good lens too, especially for video. I would say better AF performance in general than the Sigma.
Hello, I still have 4 colors for video and photo recordings with the Panasonic Lumix S5II Unfortunately, Panasonic could not give me an answer, and I didn't find any answers in the manual either. 1: Slow motion recording is only possible with MOV? can't you record slow motion with MP4? 2: Is it possible to record with normal settings (without S&Q mode) with 100, 120, 180 FPS and slow down when editing slow motion? If you record on S&Q then you only have slow movement without sound, but can't you record normally with sound but at high FPS e.g. 100, 120 fps? (possible with other cameras like Sony! 3: S5II has 5 different types of shutters, I read in the manual (399) which ones are more precise and accurate than the others? what is different? 4: where can I find the picture account roll? That is, after the picture is taken, the picture appears on the display without pressing any button for 2 (or more) seconds to check. Thank you very much
What Luts you use for Lumix color grading, Also what editing software ? I was thinking choosing one of the ones listed but not sure which ones . Thanks !
How are you finding the raw files? I tried using sample images in capture one but the highlight recovery was terrible. Maybe they only work in adobe lightroom?
thanks for the review. Was really looking for someone reviewing this camera for stills. Im using a Lumix G90 for some years for street photography and some portraits but now that Im getting more jobs like wedding and portfolios Im thinking of this camera for my upgrade. For my budget would be the best. What do you think?
I think the S5 II would be a great option for that. To be honest, if you don’t mind manual focus on video, then you should even consider the original S5. Amazing cameras for photo and video.
