Brains will beat athleticism all day long. Croatia was a unit, impenetrable and well organized. This frustrated the Brazilian style and they had no answer for it. When they finally found a way through they made another mistake. They underestimated their opponent and allowed their arrogance to dictate their play. Also you can never underestimate an opponent who is constantly punching above their weight and has a propensity of fighting until the end. Napoleon is quoted for saying “give me 100,000 Croatian warriors and I will conquer the entire world”. There was rock-band from Sarajevo (ex-Yu/Bosnia) called Zabranjeno Pušenje, and there is part of the song that says "Ko igra za raju i zanemaruje taktiku, završit će karijeru u nižerazrednom Vratniku" - roughly translated as "Who play for the people (audience) and ignores tactics, will end his career in the lower division Vratnik" (Vratnik is club from lowerest division - city division of Sarajevo). Croatian team comes from that same culture that understands the game, and there are Americans where (USA) teams can't even drop to lower division, talking about what should be or not. Whole ex-Yugoslavia understood football as something between Brazil and Italy - We cherish beauty in the game but you should do whatever is needed to win or at least not to loose. That another Balkan state didn't have so much success it's another story (former Yugoslavia had some mixed results and was favorite to win Euro 1992 - but... you know). But let's say just: last 20-30 years there is no team stable as Dinamo Zagreb on that part of the Balkans and all leagues are too bad.

I think the 3rd penalty holds the most weight. 1st penalty even if you miss it`s still a long way to go. The last one can also be under most pressure but the reward is a hero status. But the 3rd one whether you miss one or two or hit them both, it dictates the last two. A goal in the third penalty can boost and relieve a lot of pressure for the next two. That is why in my opinion Modric took the third one. That is a captain in my eyes. Even though in the last world cup he missed one and barely scored the other one.

this is probably one of the best duo's ive listened to in a long while. brilliant analysis on what could have gone wrong, where they could have possibly made all the right moves, why Brazil chocked and how amazing was the set-up laid out by the whole croatian team. I don't have a particular team to really root for as Norway is not up for anything, but i chose to root for the underdogs or against the faves and so Croatia winning is something i really hoped for.

The best and most efficient penalty taker MUST GO FIRST. In order to start off in the right direction and boost the teams confidence. You need to condider the fact that you may even reach not reach the 5th shot, so its strategically wrong to keep your best plaer to shoot last. Brozovic miss oportunitie was better chance of any brazill chance and Perisic miss at the begining too, and it was no goal shot at all. It is ofcz difficult to win a world cup but I feel the game has become more tactical after 2006 and other teams have caught up to brazils quality. In 2014 Brazil was not the best team on paper it was Germany In 2010 Spain had a midfield that showed a new brand of tactical football which was better than just the flair of Brazil 2018 France had a squad far far superior than any team of that tournament heck Belgium had the same quality of players as Brazil This was the only time they came as REAL favourites after 2006 but they just hold.on to their moment
