0:00 Intro
2:49 There is a cycle with aging of reduction of muscle mass and increase of fat mass.
3:30 Hormonal changes of aging change body composition, leading to the acceleration of muscle loss.
5:00 Diets should be paired with resistance and aerobic training.
6:00 Changes in muscle precedes fat gains.
7:30 Focus on muscle and protein intake.
9:55 Adipocyte number is set during adolescence.
10:10 Health at any size is a fallacy.
10:51 Fat cells become hypertrophied and become necrotic and die.
11:30 Excessive amounts of energy cause fat cells to become inflamed.
12:05 Overfilled fat cells spill lipids, and greatly affect your liver.
12:45 Dead fat cells cause metabolic immune debris.
14:00 Immune cells infiltrate your fat, creating inflammation.
14:45 Exercise helps prevent fat cell inflammation.
15:30 Belly fat is not benign.
15:50 Obesity causes changes in muscle tissue.
17:30 Walking builds capillary and mitochondrial density in muscles.
19:00 Leg training provides greater anabolic responses.
20:00 Age-related loss of muscle strength is 3x faster than loss of muscle mass.
21:30 Compound movements move 2 or more joints at the same time.
22:40 Combination of diet and exercise may be the most effective intervention.

When I was 60 I weighed 310, was on 7 meds and needed a cane. At 68, after 5 years of high protein keto, I weigh 205 (at 6-2), I’m on no meds except TRT, bench and squat 315 and do weighted pull up (45 Lb dumb bell between my feet) and avoided a back surgery scheduled 6 years ago. Anyone can do this! People think I’m a super fit 50!

At 75, I am old enough to remember that about the time fat phobia became the norm, a second lie to the effect that elderly needed to limit protein to protect the liver was circulating. Happily I am loosing weight with homegrown milk kefir and sauerkraut. The weight loss accelerated with intermittent fasting.

Goatmilk? I’m wondering about clabbering goatmilk vs cow milk Never done it, not sure it will do it vs actually spoiling lol Raw cow milk never spoils, it just gets sour-er but diesnt actually cause illness like spoiled dead (pasteurized) milk I hope goatmilk does the same!

@@YeshuaKingMessiah milk kefir is made with probiotic grains added to the milk and then strained out after they process the milk into what is sometimes called drinkable yogurt. It is my understanding that clabbered milk starts with raw milk and allows the natural enzymes to thicken and sour the milk. Homogenized milk simply goes bad. Kefir grains are stored in milk and refrigerated between batches. They grow and produce kefir for years if properly maintained. In that sense, they are like a kombucha scoby, but with a much greater number of good bacterial strains.

Don't worry about it, most people won't hate you for it, but some definitely will.

I was 5.4 feet and weighted 115-117 during my young years, consistently and stable.(show on ID) Now I am 70, weight 109-110, height still 5.4 feet (per doctor office). My height remain same. My weight drop a bit could be because I retired in 2021 and have plenty of time to daily walk, and swimming. These are the activities I do all my life long, long fast walking daily, swimming and hit the ball at tennis court. This also helps me sleep well 8 hours everyday. I eat a lot but good food . No restrictions on healthy foods, no portions control, however I fast daily 16 to 18 hours and during feeding time I don't restrict on calories. My weight stable at 109-110 always in the morning. Still wearing bikini at the pool and beaches. Definitely a good diet and consistently active really help during aging process. But you have to form that habit since the young years. Yes, I have seen most aging people become fat, unhealthy living on drugs and/or shrink in size to be shorter.

Convinced my mum to do carnivore with me a couple years ago and she dropped a weight and improved her ability to move and diminish pain. Recently I noticed she was skipping many meals, replacing them with coffee, either not wanting to eat or forgetting to. Her pain increased and movement decreased, her mood and focus dropped. She started doing weights and high resistance cycling, all that stopped or decreased and weight loss plateaued. She’s 72. Only about 2 weeks ago I noticed and asked her to follow a high protein diet and make sure she wasn’t under eating - as her calories were equating to less than 1000 a day sometimes! I asked her to swap her afternoon coffees for decaf and and whey protein shakes and also started her lifting weights again. Within 2 weeks her mood, cognition, sleep has all improved. Pain has reduced and mobility increased. She doesn’t wake up tired or sore and has increased her resistance on the bike by double! She looks forward to meals too. Her physio was so impressed with he change that occurred in only 3 weeks from her last appointment - I said I really believe it to be the protein and enough calories form the right foods. We aim for around 150gram of protein a day and it’s been amazing seeing her improve so quickly!

I'm 68 and recently discovered that I was eating less than a quarter of the amount of protein I need. I had been protein deficient for years. The first week I started eating more protein, I gained 4 pounds, but after that, I started losing weight. I still have a hard time getting 150 grams, which is my goal, but sometimes I can get 125.

I was always afraid to consume too much protein because it beefed me up. I like to be long and lean. I am a runner. I like to eat fruit, and if I consume the amount of protein these people are talking about, I cannot enjoy my fruit. I will gain weight. I mostly eat salads with fish or egg whites for dinner. And I like to eat my fruit I like papaya, I eat a couple pounds of red grapes, every single day, lots of raw almonds, and papaya and watermelon If I went on the carnivore diet, I would miss fruit. And I feel like I would be too sluggish to do long runs. 🏃‍♀

I have seen this in my dad, who was a distance hiker and worked very physical jobs. He ate too much, and, after a major injury which forced him into retirement, he suffered so much atrophy. His breathing problems increased too, which became another limiting factor. Now my mom is right there with him, though she's been pudgy most of her adult life, because he kept her quarantined with him because of an infection that he couldn't kick. She's been trying to not just sit, and she encourages him to move as well. It has been a sobering view that, while I can still move fairly well and like to move, and I have no medicated health concerns, my weight is a ticking time bomb. I appreciate good information that can help me, and maybe others in my family, achieve better health, rather than short sighted pushes to get us all on meds.

"Older" guy here: Lots of good info, but...I wish more people realized that you don't have to exercise 5 times per week to stay in shape. I manage on just 10 workouts per month, and I'm in better shape now than I was 25 years ago (see link below) and I worked out WAY harder back then. I truly believe that 90% of "fitness" boils down to tracking (and improving) what you put in your mouth...I eat almost ZERO processed food...no sodas, no booze (quite drinking alcohol in 1991), nearly every ounce of food is organic and "whole" (eggs, blueberries, quinoa, broccoli, chicken, hamburger, etc), and the food is prepared at home. So, here's the basic summary: I'm 53 years old, height is 5' 5," I exercise 1 day on, 2 days off (10 workouts total per month), and nearly all workouts take less than 30 minutes. Of the 10 total workouts, only 4 of them are "free weight" workouts (1 is squat day, 1 is chest day, 1 is deadlift day, 1 is biceps/triceps.) Usually, I only do 5 or 6 sets during a free-weight workout, and only a couple of those sets are "working sets." The other 6 monthly workouts consist of bodyweight exercises (My bodyweight workouts = 12 sets TOTAL, a mix of different exercises; a couple sets of pullups, push ups, bodyweight squats / lunges, planks, leg raises, maybe a set of burpees every now and then, etc.) This has been my routine for years; my weight and body composition are stable. (I feel slightly "spongy" at 144lbs, I feel "lean" at 139lbs.) I recently started taking some 30-minute-treadmill walks (zone 2), but that really doesn't feel like exercise to me. (I can sweat more by banging on the drums for 15 minutes.) Hope this info inspires some of you who want to "get and stay fit," but are worried you'll have to "live at the gym" to do it. Here's the 28-year-old me VS 53-year-old comparison: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wYHURF33tu4.html

Magnesium, zinc, multivit., upped my water, prioritized my sleep, started on TRT, and after 7 years of being unable to workout, all these changes made it possible. I can finally work out! I had already lost 50 lbs. just by cutting out the sugar. I've made each small change, one at a time. The Haes movement points out that whether you’re a size 24 or a size 4, you should exercise every day or make “healthier” food choices; not with the sole focus of losing weight but because it’s beneficial to your health and should be a lifelong enjoyable habit.
@hughmonbean
@hughmonbean Месяц назад
You are correct in that the acronym Haes stands for Health At Every Size, but you described it as if it stands for healthy at every size, which it does not.
@hughmonbean
@hughmonbean Месяц назад
Haes doesn’t tell people to be fat or that being fat is healthy; the movement just reconciles the fact that some people have bigger bodies and despite this we all deserve respect and in turn we all deserve to treat our bodies with respect, kindness, and love.

Yesterday, I was at a store and there was this big dude maybe 250 plus using a walker trying to get upstairs (there are no elevators), he might have been 60 plus, I helped him all the way upstairs but he could not have done without me. I teared up because I felt his pain in not being able to do it on his own, I don't want to see myself in this situation ever, if it is up to me, I will walk, I will exercise and get healthier (of course unless you are in an accident then it is not your fault).

I was confused about HAES too. It's actually about weight stigma and obese/overweight people being able to seek healthcare and support - not insisting that people can be healthy at any size. Many doctors are hostile towards patients if they are of size.

I prefer to do strength training after I do some cardio. When I do strength training first, and then my intentions are to go for a run or get on my bike afterwards… I’m always too tired. I like to get energized with cardio first and then do strength training. 🏃‍♀

@@zerrodefex He's always had issues with audio going back to late 2019 when I first started watching, his mic stand would always fall away or feedback etc... There's great info as I say in there but written down there would be almost zero commas or full stops (periods?)... These are technical/scientific subjects he's discussing and it can take time to absorb. I have an MSc btw so it's not a case of being too thick to understand it. If this was an oral presentation at Uni the lecturers would have halted him!!

I have heard that normally fat cells multiply so that individual cells do not get too large. What causes the lack of multiplying of cells that forces individual cells to take up too much fat and "go bad?"

It's been hard for me to switch my brain from "calorie counting" (which I did for Y.E.A.R.S.!) to "eat protein and lift heavy to be healthy"...so far I've dropped 60# and can deadlift 125# (my goal is 200#). Not bad for 61 years old. I probably have 30 or 40 more pounds to lose but I feel so much better--I can be patient. I take no medications and my bloodwork is perfect.

The capillary thing mentioned & others mentioned, muscle, mitochondria, etc. Is that root cause why so many elders I see have altered gait and walk slowly with a cane or have to sit down frequently between walking attempts? And these people don't look obese. Despite past walking frequently, though she probably sat for hours in front of TV, my mother in 80s has the preceding. I've never seen any MD successfully treat this.

8-10 reps on compound lifts beats 3-5 reps for longivety. Lower reps makes it difficult to workout every 3 days or 2x per week for me.
@zerrodefex
@zerrodefex Год назад
Lower reps build more strength, higher reps more size. Nothing stopping you from having low-rep days and high-rep days in the same week though or doing a low-rep set and then doing the rest high-rep at lower weight to get a mix of stimuli. Not a bad idea also because tendons benefit from high-rep low-weight as well.
