A lot of different methods and different materials have been proposed for learning languages, but: which of these are actually used by the most respected polyglots? Cesco Reale, María de Vera, André Liss, Richard Simcott, and Niels Iversen discuss about this and many other topics in the hyperpolyglot panel. The panel is chaired by Judith Meyer.

I'm a huge lover of grammar .... I think they do its just that it's not their main priority at first it's something that comes later

As a polyglot and a linguist, I find it interesting how none of the polyglots seem to study any linguistics.

+Sophia Rose Well wouldn't people want to know the actual science behind the subject matter they devote their life to?

@Tiwaking Tiwaking I think it's because they just don't bother or are not able to take up the time with learning a language, since their jobs are studying _about_ language(s). Edit: Oh wait. I answered the wrong question.

With a language you can speak with millions of new people including pretty girls, travelers, bar mates, and investors, with linguistics you can get in debates with a handful of nerds about the terminology for the variation in grammar structure.

Linguistic doesn't teach languages. Wast of time for a language learner.

+Jorge Luis There will be three big polyglot events in 2016. Polyglot Gathering on May 5-8 in Berlin North American Polyglot Symposium probably in July in Montreal Polyglot Conference on October 29/30 in Thessaloniki This video is was taken at the Polyglot Gathering, but the Polyglot Conference is also very interesting. Check out both the "Polyglot Gathering" RU-vid channel and the "Polyglot Conference" RU-vid channel for more recorded lectures.

What is the point of learning more languages when you don't know any of the ones that you worked with to a very high level??? The point this, what is the point of moving on to new language when you havn't mastered the one you are working on??? The poly glot approach seem to create language lerners who know a little about a lot of languages but not much about any single language which makes no sense to me. I think it is better to be a strong speaker of a second language than a weak speaker of many languages.

I would not call someone a real polyglot unless they speak several languages fluently. If one could just stutter out simple ideas with messed up grammar and foreign sounding pronunciation in 10 languages, I would not consider that person a real polyglot.

@@rokkvi1 How about simple sentences with good grammar and pronunciation? Considered basic fluency? In a second language.
@rokkvi1

@@brendon2462 it depends on how fast they can do it and how well they understand others

@@rokkvi1 True, I agree there, like levels of fluency. Understand everything and speaking is natural and instant.

Long-winded, at parts boring speeches. Anyone needs some help with how to talk about any subject in an interesting manner? Learning rhetoric perhaps? Pity, because the content would be interesting. Hard to pick those few interesting sentences from the long, boring tirades, alas. Nice, intelligent, well educated people with poor presentations skills. Anyone with a solution? :-)

There is a specific construction to these presentations. First, prove you are a polyglot and tell us how you got to be at that level (which is a journey that is years long). Then they talk about the methods they tried and the methods they enjoy. With 5 panelists this obviously takes a long long time, in this case over an hour! Then there are questions. If you cannot listen to a video over an hour and not enjoy it, look in the comments and people will have advice and useful links.

I thought it was interesting to hear about their life experience, more so than many "to the point" presentations. Generic bullet points can become boring rather quickly.

I get what you’re saying. I think it’s a moderator issue. She waited until everyone was finished which is the polite thing. But at the same time, it’s not the way a panel discussion should work. You want responses to be succinct so they are easily comparable. If you want to hear the whole life story of any guest in particular then you should go to their own presentation.

How come these self-styled polyglots are always yacking away in english ?! What about other languages ? Anyone of these esteemed folks speak hindi ? or punjabi or even bengali ? Spoken way more than german, russian and french.

+Samrat B Indian languages can only be found mostly in India (although I suppose as minority languages in various places), so of course, less people would be interested. Plus people in Europe have much more contact with European languages. It's only natural.
@rokkvi1

Because that is the language that more people in the world understand than any other. If they had these discussions in any other language, fewer people would understand, including fewer polyglots. I do not know how many of the more esteemed western polyglots speak any Indian languages (I do not recall hearing any of them talk about it), although that´s an interesting question. Many do learn Chinese, Japanese and Korean as well as Arabic and that seems to be more popular than learning the Indian languages.
