How I Built An Ergonomic 80/20 Chair + Pantry Cabinet IN MY VAN!!

This video covers a single "cabinet" that serves 3 purposes: pantry, storage, and ergonomic bench. It's built out of 80/20 aluminum extrusions and skinned with lightweight plywood. This was the first time I worked with 80/20 not at 90 degree angles & was lots of fun!

The white bolts look nicer/disappear. The blue striped cloth breaks the white monotony/the white fabric makes it look like its an undone bed.

I would go for the stripped fabric for the chair and then use the colors from it to make the bedding thereby tying it all together from front to back and breaking up the monotony of all that white.

If these are the only choices, then the stripes are way more interesting. Even better would be to try and match the upholstery on the driver's and passenger's seats. More of a finished and high-end look.

Very nice but the best chairs have upholstery webbing and springs under the seat. When you only have a plank of wood under the foam there isn’t enough GIVE. Sorry, but nobody in the van world seems to know these basic lessons of upholstery.

Your attention to detail is always on point. I like the grey, chevron fabric on the chair. I think you can always add a pop of color using plants, faux or otherwise. The custom bolts are the way to go. Stay safe and TFS💖

100% the white bolts dude, Also the grey fabric but darker similar to the van's colour... The stripes design really doesn't fit in with 'Zombie Apocaplypse' theme.. this is a manly build please don't add effeminate touches like 95% of the YT van builds. Great work so far as usual!

Sunbrella is also fire resistant, UV resistant, and you can bleach it as much as you want and none of the color will come out oh and I'd go with the gray

I like the angled seat. In most vans you can't do that because they form part of a bed. This looks way more comfortable. As for the cusion covers, the striped pattern looks too beach bum. This is a zombie apocalypse van, go with the grey, maybe slightly darker, with piped edges? You either read my comment in the kitchen galley build video about white headed bolts, or great minds think alike 😁👌

Yes, lots haha. No diy seat will ever be legal, but most aftermarket installers will bolt theirs through the floor + frame of the van. This one is indeed bolted to the frame w/the factory bolt holes so I would deem it “pretty safe” for driving if I bolted a 3 point seatbelt to the 80/20. That being said, no need for a third seat right now (let alone a 2nd 😂) so right now this is just a potential future project.

Regarding bolts: how did I know you’d try an alternative? Whatever makes you happy. White does look clean. Must be good powder coat if the Allen wrench didn’t mar them. Fabric? Making same choices on mine now. Whatever hides dirt (although I’m sure you don’t let stuff get dirty and Sunbrella is supposed to be easy to clean) and whatever matches the other fabrics on the bed, etc.

My votes: White bolts. Plain fabric for cushions. Maybe make a curtain with stripes. Those drawer handles are cool but I could see me getting my clothes caught on them and tearing when walking past them. Also, using knuckles to pull drawer handles would hurt arthritic hands. Nice build. 👍

White bolts and gray fabric 💯. The pattern of the stripes just doesn’t flow and are too busy. Preference wise tho, I’d select perhaps a more blue or darker gray hue of that light gray pattern to bring the outside colors in. The stripes are just way busy and don’t match anything. 🤘🏼⚡️🤙🏼

Go with the stripes, instead of the monochromic herringbone. A little break in the color scheme, Will make a lot difference. Curtains ? Perhaps a Periwinkle Blue 🤔. Just a thought

Very nice Contruction I can’t wait to see all done. I prefer the white fabric or Gray. One recommendation: I already have a Ford transit van 144 medium height conversion that I use for my business removing all material racks (DEWALT touch system) to go camping and after a Year the screws are loose and some of them fell down so I have to tie again. I am trying to find some type of liquid or material to tie the thread of the screw to avoid that. Just a good point of view after you finish everything and start using it the movement unscrew everything

Definitely keep the white bolts!!! They disappear into the wood. BTW, could you put a link to where you found them in the description? I’d like to use them in my build too. Thanks! Oh, and out of the two fabrics you have shown, I’d pick the stripes for some color in your decor.

I'd go with the white bolts. It looks more professionally done. I don't think the metal colored bolts add anything. Between the herringbone, and the striped, I think the splash of color from the striped fabric adds a nice contrast to the white. The herringbone fabric blends in too much and leaves it looking bland. The quirky angles of the seat, and pantry drawers are fantastic. I'm really impressed with your work on this. And, great videos.

Really appreciate all your videos and the info you provide (in a non boring way). The white bolts and grey fabric. But personally I'd choose a different color fabric in my van. To each there own. I'm curious and would like to ask what you do for work. I saw the video where you went to your office in Denver. But I've never heard what you actually do. I'll guess your a computer guy since you do so much research on your van builds.

Go for the white bolts, looks cleaner. I wouldn’t go for either of the fabrics, why not an orange or yellow accent colour, match it up with your bed sheets to pull it all together. Keep up the good work 👍 from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A question and suggestion that may have been mentioned already (and realizing it's over a year later). What happened to the A/C unit that was going below the bench seat? And the suggestion is that all of the wood in the countertop and pantry should have been primed with Killz. That way you reduce the risk of mold from the sink or shower.

For the frabric, I prefer the grey one. A bit darker would be better IMO and match the fridge and the handles. For the bolts, I would go white. Question : what about the dead space between the computer and pantry drawers ?

I love extruded aluminum; just make sure to apply some low-strength Loctite on the fasteners in vehicles, aircraft, etc. Failure to do so will turn the framing into a rattletrap you can't easily access.

I prefer the silver bolts. I like the touch of industrial design and mechanical display. I prefer the herringbone, but in a darker tone of grey, maybe with a turquoise/blue accent color in the piping if you are having the upholsterer do a piped edge cushion. Or have them upholster one side of each cushion in a different coordinating fabric so that you can decide whether you want plain or colorful depending on your mood that day.

I’m worried there isn’t enough leg room once you swivel the driver seat unless you have a kid in the other seat. Build looking amazing though and agree white bolts. I don’t love either fabric, but consider your bedding to create a color theme. Personally I like a pop of color, but bed or other things in the van can tie the color theme together.

Though the white bolts does provide a somewhat cleaner look, the "overall" style of the interior actually benefits more from the metal look even more so as it accents and plays well with other fixtures that are metal. The white bolt looks like you "tried" to make the panels smooth but due to the look of the bolt it just comes across as unfinished IMHO. That's my take on it. But at the end of the day it's whatever makes you feel more at home.

Think the grey material and the silver industrial bolt look goes better with the zombie apocalypse van but the white bolts give you a cleaner look. I do not think the stripes fit the style or look of the van. A darker solid colour would work if you are looking to bring some contrast to the interior. Great video, always learn something looking forward to the next one.

I like the silver bolts, it's a more interesting look. Adds character to otherwise pretty plain white cabinets. Both look pretty darn good though.

My suggestion is: If you can't hide something - expose it. I'd choose black bolts istead of white ones. ;)

Definitely the white bolts. Stainless ones tend to draw your eye and are a distraction. Of the two fabics go with more color although we are not crazy about either one. Some color would be good otherwise your interior will be too monotone. BTW very useful links on seat design, thanks for those.

The visible bolts white (when used in the white painted wood) , the ones you used for the bench I would keep naturel as they are used in non painted wood. For fabric I would go for a darker colour (for stains and in contrast against the white of youre furniture)

White bolts for sure. Neither of those fabric options work in my opinion. I'd go for a solid dark color, perhaps something that matches the front seats of the van or the exterior color of the truck.
