I agree with "starving doesn't help with metabolism". I used to be super thin and last year I gained some weight. Thinking that I should lose weight, I ate barely and starved myself. I was always hungry and didn't have energy at all. Then suddenly I started to gain weight so quickly. Only then I understood that starving isn't a good option

if becoming active sounds intimidating to anyone, I really recommend long walks! Finding a good podcast or music to listen to and going on a morning/evening walk is a really nice way to stay active

There's also an endless amount of workouts that can be done right at home, even without equipment or weights. I workout at home 3/4 times a week cause I'm also very self conscious in public and wouldn't feel comfortable in the gym either. Best of luck to everyone who's doing their thing.

To any wondering: Pilates is a form of weight training. You do not need to go to the gym and lift weights. If you can’t afford the gym, I you have anxiety about going to the gym, know it is not the only form of exercise that will build muscle and increase your metabolism :)

This is so true, I worked at walmart and I lost so much weight from the heavy lifting and got close to abs, I literally lost 20 pounds in 3 months and my metabolism is completely fixed and it has never been like this in my life

@@CandiceSAPA well, you were active at your job I would assume. It’s all calories in, calories out. So while you were eating such things, you were still in a caloric deficit, causing you to lose weight. Certain foods don’t cause you to gain weight. It’s a caloric surplus that causes you to gain weight

Hey, I was really sick in May and I couldn’t last any longer so I admitted myself into the hospital. I remember that day so well because I felt like I was going to actually die. My ears were blocked and my walking was super slow, I could think properly and my heart was beating super quickly. I was tired, every day I made myself to awful things to hurt myself. I admitted myself to the hospital and I was scared but I can live now. I can feel free and happy now… please get the help u need love. Recovery is hard but it’s better than feeling trapped and isolated from the world. I love you❤

this actually makes so much sense to me now.. in primary school i used to be super active and i could eat more than i eat now normally without gaining weight. after i started secondary school, i had to focus so much more on my studies and i rarely properly exercised so i gain weight more easily than i used to. once my nationals end im gonna start working out more! edit: finished exams and graduated yesterday. just started running, wish me luck :) edit 2: okay so update I guess, I didn't really manage to stick to my plan because I got a job but that job required me to lift a lot so that actually helped my metabolism but I started school 2 months ago so.. but at my school now we have to run every thursday morning so that's good

For those who love home workouts (or just hate the gym), you can do a LOT with a gym mat, resistance bands, and adjustable dumbbells!! You can achieve more than you think with just those 3 items👍

As a teen girl that lives in a small village with limited facilities, going out to the city would take at least 1 hour which means I can't go anywhere without a transport aka parents' car. An other advice to increase your metabolism : sleeping. Your body burns a lot of cals during your sleep. It’s important to have good sleep habits when you try to lose weight. Also it gives you energy and it’s good for your mental and physical health in general. Take care of you guys 💗 + I forgot but it is also important if you want to build muscles because your muscles grow not during but after your training, notably during sleep

I wanted to share my personal story if this can help anyone. I was always a fat child, pictures of me when I was younger my upper arms have always been thick, genetics, and I’ve always had a huge belly. To the point I couldn’t even see my toes when I about 9, my parents were very polarizing my mother tried to feed me healthy meals and my father would just hand me a bag of chips or a whole pack of grapes and I would eat the whole bags because I knew he wouldn’t feed me anything else. Since my mom is the only one that works she really relayed on my dad to make sure I was healthy, but he did the exact opposite. He was disabled at 25 because of diabetes. When I was 14 I met my first bf he was 17, it was a very horrible relationship. He was very controlling and took advantage of me because my family was middle class he was lower class so he would take my money my parents gave me for emergency reasons and even would check my bag for money. During that time he would tell me to lose weight because “we would break up with me if I didn’t lose any weight”. That scared me to death because I really loved him and I wanted to be with for forever. So I wouldn’t eat anything for 6 days a week, only drink 1 bottle of water, and only ate when I saw him which was once a week, we went to different schools. When I did see him we would only eat a hoagie that we would split and split a bag of chips, and that cycle continued for 5 years. I was at my lowest weight in my life which was 140, I felt excited but then again when I looked at pictures my arms were still thick, I still had belly fat, my skin looked so dull and sickly, my eyes even looked so sad which I was. When I was in Senior year, I met a guy that was mutual friends with almost all of my friends and really helped me snap out of it, we talked for a few months and became good friends, the one thing he said was “Are you happy?” And I said “yeah” and he said “No, are you really happy?” And I paused and started crying uncontrollably and was even mad like wanting to scream and hit things he just hugged me and even said “you can hit me if you need to”. I broke up with my ex literally just saying “I want to break up” and my ex smiled and said “Okay” and I hung up, he thought I was joking. I already cried enough for him, I already hurt my body enough for him, I put up with it for so long and I was finally done. Me and my new friend started hanging out more and more. Eventually, he worked up the courage to tell me he liked me. We got together in 2019 and have been together since then. But 2020 hit and we dropped like everyone else, we gained an extraordinary amount of weight to the point. This is the highest I’ve ever been in my life, which is 240. I haven’t had any health problems and neither has he but we don’t want to start having health problems we’re both 21 now, even with our weight gain we are still incredibly happy our love has never changed. We both are going to start working out but our main things we don’t want to change our diet, we live a more Korean diet, rice, side dishes and meat for every meal is a must. I don’t think any Asians can give up white rice which a lot of people say “Cut out all carbs, have only lean meats with no fat, no sugary drinks” which yes those would ultimately help you lose weight but to never have noddles and rice or to only have it once a week is impossible for us, let alone his number 1 favorite meal is grilled pork belly with rice lol. I’ve been following Zoe since he cut out all sugar for a whole year. I’m very happy she’s doing well health wise, but now we need to step up our game. Thank you very much for making this video, it really helps people like us that are struggling. I completely destroyed my metabolism for 5 years and now it’s time for me to heal it and nurture it. I went from 165cm 50kg-39kg when I was twelve years old from starving myself. I started to faint a lot and my hair was falling out. Even then, I didn’t dare eat more than 1000 calories and was always, ALWAYS calculating! (The only benefit was my math got better, and I have to admit, I did LOOK good wearing certain clothes). However, on the inside, I was dying, struggling, anxious, and wasn’t able to concentrate. I’m looking back, it’s really a MIRACLE how I still managed to have straight A’s and all that. Now I’m 15 and after years of counseling and trying my best ignoring my family’s toxic weight talks (which happens almost every hour and was the root of the problem), I got a streak of not weighing myself for 2 months! (Yes it was horrifying, but oh my, did it release me for minutes at a time!! I found peace for the first time.) however, as do all bad weight loss creates, I went through years and years of binging (oftentimes taking over my schoolwork, making me late to classes, etc) and starving myself, making it hard to do homework. Before grade 9, I even lost my social life because my life revolves around calculations of calories and schoolwork. Even though I gained more weight than I initially had when I was 12, and I’m still thinking about it more than I’d like to, I’m AT LEAST not fainting and losing my hair like crazy (that’s an upside!) As someone who had anorexia for years, I really appreciate this video, talking about how the weight loss methods you see online just aren’t sustainable. You are lucky if they didn’t almost kill you.

Your story is heartbreaking to me, but I am glad to see you are on your way to recovery! I had anorexia from 13-15 (I am 22 now), and I felt the same way back then as you do now. You will make it through this period! If no one has told you, the weight gain that comes with recovery also comes with a really cool side effect... a really strong and fast metabolism! I have been recovered for 7 years, and I still have a faster metabolism than many my age. Ofc, recovery also comes with other important benefits, like less intrusive thoughts, freedom from fear of calories/weight gain/ other anxieties you might have, and a better social life (less Ana thoughts = more space to think about other things). I believe in you!

From someone who’s gone through that before and made it out: you HAVE to gain weight while you’re growing. It’s literally in the word: you’re growing. So no matter what, you’re going to weigh more than you were when you were a kid, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s fat. Another thing, if you gain a little bit of fat before you’re 19 or so, just remember that it’s baby fat and your body is storing it to make you taller and more adult looking if you know what I mean. I’m saying this not to discourage you, but because it really messed w my head when it happened to me. I got a little bit of chub when I hit puberty and I couldn’t get rid of it no matter what I tried. And then, all of the sudden, I grew taller and got a bit curvier and the baby fat was gone. It’s a part of development. That’s why I’m so so so against dieting as a minor, especially under the age of 17.

Your guide to metabolism. Hope this helps because it took me a really long time to do XD *1. Metabolism Components* • RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) o Simply living/doing nothing o Accounts for 60-70% of total energy burned • Activity Level o Working out/going to the gym/playing sports o Accounts for 15-30% of total energy burned • Thermic Effect of Food o Digestion o Effected by what you eat o Accounts for roughly 10% of total energy burned • NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) o Spontaneous movements - pacing/fidgeting/using hands while talking o Accounts for 5%+ of total energy burned • BMR (Basic Metabolic Rate) *2. Boosting Metabolism* • Exercise o Resting metabolic rate is dependent on your activity level • Higher Muscle Mass o Lean muscle mass determines 74-80% of BMR *3. Food* • Never EVER starve yourself • Your diet is a whole painting o A painting needs a little of everything • Food types o Fats raise your BMR 0-5% o Carbs raise your BMR 5-10% o Proteins raise your BMR 20-30%  Proteins build muscle, and more muscle raises your RMR o Fiber  Takes more energy to digest  More satiating because it absorbs more water in your GI (Gastrointestinal) tract  Naturally comes with vitamins and phytochemicals from the plant source *4. i am almost crying beacuse all you said sums up perfectly the moral of my hard long battle. starving might feel good but the healthy body that will carry you and your family is the biggest motivation to never let yourself down so much again, to keep going, to see more of the world. when you really think about it, it's so easy to get back to shape and keep it up. it should be natural. just listen to your body and appreciate it

i have struggled with an eating disorder for years however have recently started focusing on my health rather then my weight. i am honestly feeling so much better for it but was still slightly unsure whether i was doing the right thing. i watched this video out of curiosity and the way you explained everything was perfect. this was very relatable to me in so many ways and made me feel so much more confident that i am taking positive steps towards feeling comfortable in my body :) thank you

I am struggling with an ed. I lost a lot of weight last year by eating very low cal and exercising a ton. Now I am at a point where I'm getting hungrier, eating 1 meal a day, somehow gaining weight and getting puffy. This is the first video that has truly inspired me to start strength training and eating more without fear. I am so scared of weight gain, but if I keep living the way I am now, then I'm setting myself up for long term negative effects. Man, why do I make life difficult...

Something to remember is that sometimes, weight gain comes with building muscle. Also, there is an amount of fat your body needs to function well. What's that number, no idea whatsoever. The biggest problem with restriction I learned a few years back is that it can ignore that not all fats and calories are the same

I went through the same thing. Starving myself and getting to my lowest weight only to gain more than I already weighed when I started binging. Definitely recommend to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, focus on protein and fiber, and don’t feel guilty for feeling hunger! Our bodies need food to survive.

Yes ! And remember, muscle also weighs more than fat, so you could look completely different than you'd expect after gaining weight. Gaining weight does not always equal gaining fat, and gaining fat isn't a bad thing. As someone who wished I knew this younger, since I was heavier than most my age because I was also physically strong. Weight is not definitive, it's an indicator at most, and I really wish u luck!

@@viky8032 you only gain weight if you’re constantly over eating. If you’re not you’re fine you won’t gain weight over night! An hour of any type of movement is more than enough! Food is fuel

I remember walking around the mall for 2 hours on purpose in college because my next class was in 3 hours, would eat anything I want and was thin with only around 19% body fat. now that Im working and because of the pandemic im doing that close to never and have gained so much weight. Thanks for this, inspiring me to go out more often and moving.

You really don’t know how much this helped me! I started going to the gym with the goal of strengthening my body and it has been effectively motivating me, but i would be lying if i say some days skipping just sounds tempting. My advice is work hard but make sure to rest well and eat well to avoid burn out. Be grateful for tour body and believe in the strength you have. Also affirming when i feel weak or lazy been great 👏

I've never liked how I look or my size, not to point where I've had an eating disorder thankfully, but it's always in the back of my mind when I see myself in pictures, systematically analyzing how I look, being less self conscious when I wear baggy clothes and occasionally skipping meals just to feel better about myself if I haven't exercised. I really hope that as I grow I can learn to eat what I love and make exercise a regular habit (sometimes it's hard to find the time tho ;) Again, thx!!!!

Your videos are so helpful and have really genuine and important content. The gym is such a good place to loose weight, as someone who had anxiety and depression, it really helped me when I saw the results and even more when I realized that everyone at the gym don't even pay attention to other people's exercises.

I feel like the best thing about starting working out with strength training from a complete beginner point is that you see progress happening the fastest. I used to work out regularly, got off track and out of my routine, then slowly just stopped altogether, and I've just recently picked it up again. I can't wait to see progress again!

idk but i actually started crying because of this video, i did a lot of fitness and weight training last year but during my finals i could not keep that up and kinda fell in a hole of overeating and never working out again, i’m feeling extremely bad not only about my body but also about my mind but you kind of animated me to get into working out again, ready to feel good and happy

god i suffered five years of weight gain after adolescence, during this time i went through all the terrible periods of life of not accepting myself, watching a lot of videos about losing weight and healthy eating, trying different medicines that harmed my health, but this video is one of the best I have ever watched and which changed my vision. I completely relate. I have been a healthy weight for a long while now but I still think about food negatively constantly. Recently I started going to the gym and I have to say that I feel so much better. Although my ed is still around I feel healthier and don't feel bad about myself when I eat more than usual. I really want to maintain this and I believe I will feel even better in summer when I can actually go outside and be active. Also, being active has helped my mental health in general, especially whenever I feel anxious!

Now I go to the gym to get stronger and build muscles and it’s fun ! It’s so exciting to see the weight I lift go up. And then sometimes I catch myself in the mirror and am happy with what’s changed, but in the end I feel very healthy and so excited to work out

My ED started by counting calories- it all became a numbers game. If you feel its starting to become an issue please look for professional help. Dont let if take hold...it will honestly bring you nothing but misery. Life is short - dont make it shorter!!

hi!! i don’t know if this is ur issue (also i love ur lamp pfp) but visceral fat aka the fat on ur torso and also shoulder /neck fat is only possible to lose with semi-intense exercise, and if ur issue is ur lower half, eat more protien and eat nutritious foods. As someone who starved them self for years and saw their waist go from 26-32 at 600cal a day then started binge eating butter chicken and exercising and lost 3 inches and 20 pounds Only way to make ur body like your ideals (and mainly to be healthy bc ur health matters ur weight doesnt) is to move it and feed it well, bc starving at the bare minimum will catch up in the future and give u an issue that takes so much of ur focus u gain the weight all back

That's how i started too... i never truly starved myself but i wasn't eating the amount of calories i needed for my fitness level. EDs are miserable, for your own sake i beg of you watch out for your health and remember that's what matters... don't listen to anyone who tells you you "HAVE" to lose weight/exercise and become thinner: not social media, fitness influencers, or yourself

honestly, everyone's bodys are different. what works for person A doesnt work for person B. but what doesn't work for anyone is starving themselves, feeling guilty over food, overexercising. Accept your body for the way it is now--not for what it was or what it can be and realize that if weightloss is your goal--it takes a long time. just relax and as long as you making positive strides towards your goal, slowly and steady wins the race.

I initially clicked on this video looking for a diet plan or some sort of food that aided in weight loss. I just want to say thank you. This video nearly brought me to tears when you started explaining about what a healthy mindset and goals are. I realized that I was so consumed with how I wanted to look, that I didn't care about my health, my relationship with myself, and my body. It was getting to the point where I was just beyond frustrated and depressed because it wasn't working or I couldn't stick to such a low calorie diet due to the amount of hunger I felt. Not only that but it was to the point where I would break down when I saw someone with an athletic build, because of how upset I was with myself that I couldn't have the level of commitment they did, and comparing myself to them became second nature. I am so grateful that you decided to make this video. It really, truly helped more than I can even express with words. From the bottom of my heart, thank you :')

I’ve watched so many videos and I love how you explained it with your video of eating and in the gym. I’m in my 50’s and I was always a normal weight. Early menopause slowly put on twenty plus pounds. I’m now in the gym doing cardio and weights and finally look forward to going to the gym. It’s only been a couple weeks but I’m starting to see small changes. 😊

Thank you for making this video. People don’t believe that I barely eat bc I’m chubby, and I’ve tried to explain this concept to them. I was aware of the problem but never knew how to fix it, bc the science of metabolism felt intimidating. I came to the same conclusion after trying to take the 'easy' route and starve myself because I convinced myself I hated exercising. I don't even do hard-core workouts, but I noticed I lost weight and it stayed off. I still battle with myself over not restricting myself, but I'm happier then I was before. The thing is that it all depends. There is no 'one fits all'. I workout 5 to 6 times (4 times strength and 1 to 2 times volleyball) per week. I used to be chubby but lost a lot of weight when tracking my calories. I only had a healthy deficit of 200 to 300kcal, so I didnt kill my metabolism. I have stopped tracking and I have started gaining weight again. I lift heavy, workout approx 1 hr and that doesnt help. So you have to actually be really careful WHAT you eat. It is not only eating less sweets but you also have to find out what suits you most. I had a high fat diet (my bf loves drowning everything in oil) and that is a really bad thing. It is true, that you should not starve yourself but it is also not good indulding in anything. It will show up on the hips. However, a part of the equation is also predisposition. But everything you said is correct in principle. Now everyone has to find out what works best. Only starving isnt the right measure. Sports should never be seen as a purpose to burn calories, but to stay fit. I have started lifting in order to get rid of my backaches and constant muscle tensions 😁. It worked and I feel the best I ever felt. I was the laziest bum on this planet but now I couldnt imagine not working out. It has become such a big part of my life. Tbh, in the beginning I also wanted to look like those fitness influencers. But after 2 years, I just gave up 🤣. Some people are no designed to bulk at all 🤣.

this!!!! it's not that easy for everyone! i had a very bad breakdown in june and decided i would start tracking everything and indulge in... not so healthy behaviours bc i've tried the positive "fitness influencer" mindset for years and it barely worked. my body got stronger and more resistant, but i only gained and gained weight and that made me miserable. now i've been able to drop 6kg since june and tbh i feel really good about the way i look, but i also hate that i now see food as the enemy. i don't really starve but i exercise so so much and i cut any kind of snacks, plus my breakfast is very low cal. i'm also living one of the hardest moments of my life and losing weight is the only thing that makes me feel good at something. as you said, it's very complicated. my looks always made me feel insecure and terrible about myself, and now for the first time in 23 years i do like myself more, i wear clothes i would have never worn before and feel cuter. plus i genuinely love exercising, but the struggle in my mind is really bad :/ some of us really need to push to unhealthy limits to achieve what others have naturally, so i agree it's easier for some people but not for everyone :(

Personally my body works like hers. I do all kinds of exercises I can do in a day and also do sports and this makes me crazy hungry and I just inhale whatever they put in front of me and I still have hardrock abs and muscle definition, I honestly feel lucky ngl.

@cupid ♡ Why would you want to harm your body? Undereating is bullshit and when you are doing everything for health reasons you would never run the risk of undereating. You just need a healthy mindset. But tbh I am lucky, my body always tells me when it had enough food and when I need more. I can control my weight even without tracking if I really listened but I am a foodie and if I dont track I run the risk of eating too much because it tasts good. But I am an athlete and I love exercising and I love my body, I eat healthy I est unhealthy and I am feeling fine. I dont care if I have some extra chunk here and there if it means I can enjoy life 🤣

Thank you for reminding me why i had stuck with working out. I had initially started to get out of my depression & to lose weight ofc but with time i had started loving the process. I started loving workouts. I still do love working out but i think sometime in these past 1.5 years, somehow, I lost sight of how much I loved workouts. And did it only out of compulsion cuz i didn't want to lose the body which i had achieved. I forgot that i was doing it to get stronger more than losing weight cuz believe it! *Seeing & feeling stronger day by day feels like such a huge achievement!!* It feels like you're doing something good for yourself & doing something worthwhile & productive with your life! It's a whole big positive feeling!! So thanks a lot for reminding me that! I'll remind myself of this everyday until i start working out again next month so that when i get back to it I'll do it with the right mindset!

you have my dream body :( i've been struggling with a binge restrictive cycle eating disorder for 2 years and i'm really tired of not losing weight no matter what i do and if anything i've gained. u inspire me a lot and i hope to be like you one day but i just don't know how to start. i relate to u a lot when u say u would starve yourself and force yourself to eat food that you don't even like and restrict yourself of food u love. its so difficult but if you can do it i hope i can too

This is such a great video! I think social media nowadays is just pushing the image of just weight loss or fat loss and not explaining how nutrition and exercise works at all. It’s all very surface level “less calories” rhetoric. Less calories doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll lose weight. And also, when you do lose weight, what’s the goal after? There’s no long term lifestyle change. It breaks my heart to know that there are many people and companies support this “lose weight trend” without explaining why and how. Education is so important for this reason.

dude this video is spot ON! i've been pretty fit for a while now (i.e. 5'9" 130lb pretty consistently) but recently realized that that was probably too skinny for me to be healthy. I wasn't sleeping well, I wasn't eating much (ESPECIALLY not enough protein), and i was doing absolutely ZERO (0) physical activity besides walking to class every day at college. Still, in regards to my eating, I was never starving myself - i just didn't do much during the day, so I was never hungry in return. It wasn't very good for me, but I coasted by because I didn't really have many adverse effects either. These past 2 months though, I've created my own bodybuilding regimen (which is really just heavy lifting for strength that I've begun to truly love) and began to eat A LOT more. And I mean A LOT, to the point of having to get over my body's aversion to eating more by actively trying REALLY HARD to eat more food every sitting. Eating more is underrated-ly hard!! But the point is that, via eating more protein (and more in general), focusing on lifting heavy weights, and making sure to take rest days (i.e. monday wednesday friday strength training, off every other day), I've gained so much muscle and feel SO much healthier. Now I'm 5'9" 146lbs and feel so much stronger and more capable in my body. I'm enjoying food more, my skin is clearer and healthier, and I sleep so much better every night. Gaining weight and muscle has been the best thing I've ever done for my body and I'm only 2 months in! Imagine how much better I'll feel in a year!! All this to say, for anyone who's struggling with eating too little or with fear of being less skinny if they eat more and weight train, PLEASE try it out. I know it's so hard to quote unquote "risk" gaining weight, but if you started at a weight that was as unhealthy as mine, I promise that you'll feel better once you gain some muscle and eat as much as your body needs. I was scared to eat more too, but to anyone reading this, YOU'VE GOT THIS BRO! i believe in you and taking care of your body is the best gift you can give yourself. Be kind to your meat suit and your meat suit will be kind to you
