How I Frag Zoanthids

I didn’t want to title this video, “How To Frag Zoanthids” because this is just how I frag zoas. I hope that by sharing this video you’re able to pick up some or all of the methods so you can frag zoanthids at home! These aren’t hard and fast guidelines. These are tactics that have worked for me and I hope they will do the same for you.
I remember the first time I fragged a zoa. I had a buddy (thanks Matt - he did most of the work) come show me how to do it. It was nerve-racking to say the least. However, as I’ve said numerous times on this channel…the more you do something in the reefing hobby (or anything really) the easier it becomes over time.
Please let me know in the comments if you have any questions!

Do you use new frag plugs or do they need to be cured first? I have a ton in my sump but someone sent me about eight different zoas all on brand new looking plugs and the little mount on top of the plugs and turned crazy red. Is that cyano? Why would they turn so red? is that normal if they are new plugs because looks like i may have some cyano in my tank from that! Maybe she did that because she had cyano and it came back somehow. Very odd and suspicious that she would change all of them out! Great video Also how do you know they will make it like the third one that you had to cut more flesh? I have a lot of highends but a vendor told me they are difficult to frag and to go up under the flesh not even sure how you do that! Wish I had not of invested 3 k in them. I already had a lot of them melt! Didint realize how difficult highends are to grow and frag!

Tried fragging afew zoas somewhat recently, but didn't have much luck. I think a big part of that is because it wasn't well planned before hand. My latest attempt kinda just happened out of no where(previous attempt didn't go well, became unglued and zoa departed the plug and was being thrown around tank). Main issue I have with softies and some LPS is once you take time out of the tank they become slime. Have a hard time picking them up, even with forceps and knowing where to glue them. Btw do you prefer any particular brand of bone cutters? I got a frag kit from BRS but mine are on there way out. Thanks for video
@BahamaLlamaCoral
@BahamaLlamaCoral 4 года назад
I always plan out which coral I am going to cut in advance. From there, you gotta decide the lines you're going to use. Yeah, LPS and leathers are another ballgame. It's totally doable just a different set of tools. I use BRS bone cutters. They last longer if you rinse them in RODI after use.

Just curious what do you keep your water parameters at for the zoas?
@BahamaLlamaCoral

Alk - 8, Ca - 420, Mag - 1350. The key is nitrates in my mind. 5-10 ppm is the sweet spot. PO4 between .02 and .06ish.

Am I the only one who just snips off polyps in tank off a rock and then just glues them directly to a plug???
@BahamaLlamaCoral
@BahamaLlamaCoral 4 года назад
You're not. I know guys that do that. I just like to minimize the risk of damaging the zoa. It's just my preferred method. You just tank a clean razor and slide under the zoa?
@ChewysBro
@ChewysBro 4 года назад
Bahama Llama Coral not really. So when they are all open and happy in the tank - I take clean small scissors and just snip off a polyp. Then I take a turkey Bastet and suck out the polyp and put them all in a cup. Then I glue them to the frag plug. It does take them some time to recover but I’ve had no issues! That’s the only way I could think of doing it at my zoas are on a base rock🤷‍♂️

Bahama Llama Coral totally get that. Just speaking from experience from cutting nightmare sopranos something that was like 100$ I got 5 polyps and split it within a week and they all died. Higher end zoas are higher end because of high meltability rate and also some just grow slow af.. just saying blue lagoons will probably be alright but the higher end stuff has a low survival rate to begin with. Not saying your wrong and not talking bad on the video I love your channel and the rawness of your content, just giving my opinion based of my experience and I love my zoas. Otherwise great video !
