Finally an update on Betty and Bertie, my two Phidippus regius (Royal Jumping Spiders). Bertie wasn't eating and got super skinny, so here is how I managed to get him to eat. And I'm pretty sure my female spider is about to lay eggs. Our Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/s...

Glad you were able to get him eating! Some do tend to be more picky when it comes to what they eat and will exclusively only eat appropriately sized flies and not much else. My past female would eat the flies straight from the pupa, my two current males will not. I would say tho, they are opportunistic feeders and some will over eat, which is dangerous as their bloated abdomen has a risk of rupture. Especially if they fall or anything. There’s a really good graphic which you can probably Google that shows a scale of JS weight and what a healthy spider should look like, which might be helpful. :)

Yeah I think I have opposite ends of the spectrum with my spiders, Betty will eat anything and everything and bertie is picky lol.

They're not opportunistic eaters.. they like to hunt their prey much different than a tarantula or other arachnid

I also wondered if they can be overfed so I gave it a Google and read a few things, they can! It's actually a common issue among new keepers. :)) Thank you for making your videos they truly are so informative and fun

SO adorable! I'm hoping to get one in the Spring. Happy Bertie had a good feed! I know tarantulas wont eat when they're in pre moult so maybe it was a combo of shipping stress, a new environment and pre-moult? 🙏🏼 whatever he needs, you will be the best mama for him, we know! 🧡

I have new jumpers too. I saw on another channel that they need light so they will hunt. It worked for mine.

I have one of your feeding ledges and my girl also comes out and hangs around near the ledge when she’s hungry! 😂 I thought maybe it was coincidence she tends to go and hang out there when it’s getting close to feeding times but maybe not! Your spoods are adorable, going to try these tips with my little male as he’s looking a bit too far on the skinny side too. Thanks for the vid! 😊

Awww, are we accidentally training our spiders? They do seem pretty smart to be fair. Thanks for buying a feeding ledge :). I have found blue bottle flies/castor flies are a big favourite for bertie :)

Yea I had that with my guy, he was an amazing spider tho, passed away of old age a few months back, still miss him, but he refused food most of the time.

We (my girlfriend and I) just got 2 boy jumping spiders. No issue so far with mine eating but hers seems that it's gone into molting. So we'll see how he does afterwards. Love your channel. So much of your info has helped us with our Leo's so looking forward to what you learn and share on jumping spiders. Keep it up!

Females can change color with molts, sometimes subtle sometimes dramatic. I think males do a little but I don't see big changes. I would say if your girl seems still hungry but is plump, give them smaller prey. Some can kinda overeat. I generally give them a drop of water from an eyedropper before feeding.

You absolutely can overfeed a jumping spider and it can kill them so be careful!!

Now I need to know how to get mine to "lose weight" haha. They can definitely over-eat. Mine is obese so I haven't fed her in 3 weeks. I wonder how much longer I'll have to wait for her to thin out a bit...

My female jumping spider just came out of a molt two days ago and is skinny and fumbling around and im very concerned that something went wrong during her molt. Im just giving her good amount of water and will try feeding her but im scared. Has anyone had spider come out of a molt and just fall all over the place? Its very weird

They can overeat, if her abdomen is much bigger than her head, it's dangerous, it can cause abdomen separation, which I've seen and is devastating. Also if they fall while too full, it's like dropping a water balloon. Not saying this in a nasty way but please be careful

I was told that males are much more finicky when it comes to food, and are harder to get to eat, generally.

Mine hasn't eaten anything in weeks and he is super skinny. His abdomen is almost paper thin. He won't touch anything I put in and I can't get the fly castors to hatch (he usually eats those)

Quite a bit as I also purchased a large tank for him to move into, I think it was £10 shipping. I think if you bought a spider on their own its not as expensive.
