I have natural or chemical free hair..
I have fine, medium density hair with multiple hair types but majority of it is 4a..
My last relaxer: July 2009
My big chop: November 2009
I hate the whole hair typing system and don't pay much attention to it.. I use whatever product I want based on how my hair reacts to it.
In this video, my hair is in an old braid out.. I did my braids on freshly washed hair, let it air dry until it was 85-90% dry, and used the argan oil eco styler gel along with sweet almond oil to do my braids. I wore the braids to bed, tying it down with a satin scarf. The next morning I just unraveled them.
Braid Out Maintenance:
Mist hair with water and use sweet almond oil or extra virgin olive oil to re-braid.

NOTE
I will make another video discussing how often to wash your hair.. I purposely did not discuss that topic in this video..

1. apply water regularly 2. use a wide tooth comb when detangling 3. limit heat usage 4.protective styles I.e. buns 5. deep condition 6. trim your hair when needed 7. focus more on the quality not the brand name, build a hair regimen #Jesus Saves

My hair and a slip is very dry and won't produce oil. It's also thinning and my strands are coming in finer! What do you suggest?

I love this video but I have to make a comment because a lot of these people are really pissing me off. First of all let me just let people know something because people seem to be very ignorant when it comes to talking about women who wear weaves and wigs. My auntie has been wearing wigs for 20 years she's a nurse. She doesn't have time to be doing her hair she's always on the go. Her hair is all the way down her back her hair is longer than mines okay. And she's been wearing wigs no heat no coloring no relaxers no nothing just braid her hair put her wig on and keep it pushin. Just because you wear weaves and wigs do not mean you are bald. And so what if you are a lot of women have issues growing their hair. Some women have hormone imbalance some have alopecia. Some just can't grow their hair the way they want to so they have to give their hair a break maybe it's because of heat damage. And then sometimes we want the option of wearing different colors without putting any chemicals on our hair such as bleach. I'm getting really sick and tired of people trying to say that you hate yourself as a black woman when you wear a weave lol wtf. But its okay for a white woman to get extensions and wear braids but it's not okay for us. It's always a double standard when it comes to black women and I'm really sick of it doesn't make any sense. Like I don't understand why natural hair people have to hate on people that still wear relaxers hair. Or relax people have something to say about people wearing natural hair calling their hair nappy this shit needs to stop. If you're trying to educate people on trying to grow their natural hair so be it. But why put others down because of what they choose to do to there fucking hair. Somethings may not work for them that works for you. Instead of trying to put people down about wearing weaves and wigs try to educate them and try to uplift them and try to motivate them to wear their natural hair. We've been teased for years and years about having nappy hair and then we do where our hair out you know people want to complain or people want to say why are you relaxing your hair. And why you doing it so why you doing that. I'm grown and I can do what I want to do with my hair. Your opinion is irrelevant because I can go from relaxed I can go from natural.I can do whatever I want to do with my hair because I know how to take care of my hair. Rather it's a perm or if I'm just wearing natural or wearing a weave it's not the weave that's breaking your hair and it's not the wig. If you don't know how to grow your hair and you don't know how to moisturize it and keep it from heat damage and keep it from overly processing with chemicals your hair won't grow. And then on top of that everybody hair is different I'm just saying this because I'm tired of people making rude ass comments. It's unnecessary I know I can't change the world but damn I mean come on now.

+Ihatef8keb1tches I am right with you. I have three girls and doing hair is a lot of work. Thank goodness my oldest figured it out early and helps me. I love the whole transitioning to natural things and I am amazed at all the things I can do with my hair now that natural hairstyles are being embraced. However, it is still a process and I would never knock someone for wearing wigs or weaves because I have been there. Sometimes people do not have time to do their hair. White and Spanish women have extensions, perms, hair club for woman and long tedious routines themselves, yet, no one criticizes everything they do. All I wanted to do was watch a video about how to do my hair and get some tips in the comments and we are still getting ridiculed. smdh!

Since I was a child my hair got stuck at about 15 inches on the crown, 12 inches at the back. Due to having severe allergies I've been unable to use shampoos and conditioners since I was 12. I did get some mediated stuff doc recommended which smells awful and leaves my hair looking like dry straw. I decided to stop using it. I'm now left with using water and vinegar. I'd sometimes used coconut oil so I increased the use. I also included olive oil and almond oil in winter. What I've found out recently is that I can deep condition with just yogurt or pureed banana or coconut milk. I did a patch test with henna so I could try a henna glaze. Luckily I'm not allergic to it so I've had henna. Now for the first time in a long while I'm retaining length. After 3 months of deep conditioning once a week and a henna glaze. I've got to 18 inches on my crown.

Hi Lena, that's what I've been doing. Really I grew up with water rinsing daily and a shampoo like concoction once a week. I just leave out the shampoo substitute now. The hair's gotten longer now too. It's mid back, almost waist long.
@krob9145

There is no such thing as allergy free shampoos. Those are really shampoos that may be free from added colouring or fragrance because those are very common allergens. Some people with allergies are okay with that. I am not. If you're allergic to more than that then these are useless. From what I've heard Whole foods cater for the organic market in the USA. We have a different sent of organic shops in the UK. Organic does not mean allergy free. I'm allergic to the basic shampoo recipe, plus colouring, plus fragrances or scent maskers in unperfumed products, plus the necessary preservatives added to prolong shelf life, plus other added ingredients some of which add texture or thickness n products. I'm also allergic to soap, I can't even use baby soap. I rely on my doctors advice and even so after some years I developed a bad reaction to a prescribed product then had to change products again. I even sometimes have a bad reaction to plain water. Fortunately that doesn't happen daily throughout the year and I now have a cream to help sooth some of the pain when it happens.

Faith McQuinn lol omg t.y. I thought I was going to have a ton of bashers telling me " you're not doing it right!" Now that's it's snowing and freezing I've been getting into the twist but like you said it takes too long and "AINT NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT!!!" . So what I do is 6 twist (mist my hair, add a little pudding all over, then oil my hair and scalp b4 the twist) then in the morning I take them out and separate. It looks like my natural pattern and last 3 days. I do it so my afro dont loo like a curly version of kid from kid n play.

I have been natural for ten months and have 16 months of hair growth which stops at the base of my neck but i blame my ends that suffer from single strand knots! I hear people say protective styling and see videos of braid outs and what not but im 15 and can't braid nor do i really have time to do twist outs so my go to was the puff. I thought i knew all there was to know until after 6 months of puffing it up i noticed slight breakage in the front😱 I'm currently wearing my hair in box braids but the point of my comment was to THANK YOU FOR DEFINING PROTECTIVE STYLES AS "TUCKING YOUR ENDS AWAY"!😁😁 Guys this is important. The puff may look cute but you should only use it when a protective style fails! My much adored puff made me forget about moisturizing daily and gave me single strand knots. After i take these braids out i will trim and tuck them away in box braids again. Thanks for the enlightenment 😊

I can vouch for the effect of daily water spritzing. I lived in Saudi Arabia for 2 years, and the first thing I noticed was that my hair dried out instantly. I wore my hair very short and natural at the time, but was interested in growing it long again. I developed a regimen of spritzing and lightly oiling my hair twice daily, and keeping it twisted and covered most of the time. The covering helped a lot, but it was easy to do in that country since women are expected to cover their hair due to religious and social expectations. My hair is much longer now, and even though I am not in such a hot and dry climate, I have stayed with this regimen with much success. Thanks for your great advice, but I would suggest that you use filtered water for spritzing instead of tap water which can be loaded with things you don't want in your body or your hair.

I literally want to cry because ALL of the things mentioned in this video I literally do. (No heat, apply oil&water,use a wide-tooth comb, moisturize under a protective style etc). Yet I still have 5inches of hair after 4years of being natural. I have never dyed my hair (though its my desire) because I don't want to make this journey more difficult than it is. If someone can tell me what I'm missing that will be of great help, thank you.

A healthy lifestyle and diet play key roles in hair growth. Proper amounts of vitamins and minerals, eating fresh fruits and fresh vegetables while having enough water intake is key as well. Vitamin supplements help but eating right is your absolute best bet! You have to remember to work from within FIRST and externally second. Goodluck :)
@JuanitaPatrick
@JuanitaPatrick 10 лет назад
honestly, fruits and vegetables have never made a difference to my hair. I have the worst diet and its still grown longer than it was when i was relaxed. so i doubt your diet is truly the problem. I would suggest takibg a good hard look at your hair to see whats wrong. Are you always in a constant battle to keep your hair moisturized? Is the ONLY time you see a curl pattern is when your hair is soaking wet? does a lot of hair come out during a detangling session? If this is the case you may want to up the ante where moisture is concerned, and to do that i'd suggest cowashing (or at least using a sulfate free shampoo), find a silicone-free leave in conditioner, and even give the LOC Method a try. These are all greay ways to ensure your hair is never thirsty. On the other hand, you also need to keep your hair strong with a protein treatment every 4-6 weeks. And take care to only style your hair when it's wet/damp to avoid tearing. Do you use a satin cap at night? Are you taking care of any split ends? You may only need to tweak one part of your regimen (or do a complete overhaul depending on whether or not you have good habits in place) but thrle only way to know is to try something new and see how hour hair reacts. I hope thats helps a little

YESSSS Juanita girl that helped a WHOLE LOT!!!! I eat a lot of veggies &some fruits...no fast food for the last 4months,I work out an hour& a half everyday aside the Sabbath...so I KNOW its not mii diet &exercise. I do lose a lot of hair during detangling,I also have never tried a protein treatment. So I will definitely start doing that. Mii shampoos do have sulfates :( .I seal mii ends since its the oldest part of mii hair. Thank u sooo much Juanita. No more sulfates For me :) &I will definitely get on the protein treatments right away. Will give an update in mii hair growth after trying this for 2months or so. Again,thank u. U rock! :)

Hi Akorkor - not sure whether you've had any success yet, but I wanted to share what worked for me. I want to warn you that this is pretty expensive, but it worked. About three years ago I was looking at a lot of natural hair videos like this one. I had a perm at the time. Based on my lifestyle and the logic of how hair grows from the root and retention problems are the reason it doesn't grow for some people, I decided to grow mine using a full head sew-in weave. I told my hairdresser that my goal was to grow out my natural hair, so he was sure to not braid it too tight. I left it in for three months at a time and conditioned my scalp religiously every two weeks. When my natural edges started to become noticeable about two months in, I'd wear it curly so that it blended nicely and covered the edges. Every three months they'd take out my weave, cut off more perm (you wouldn't have to worry about that part) deep condition, and put it back in the same day. I did this for three years. My goal was to have enough length that I could wear it in protective natural styles easily - I wanted to be able to pull it back into a ponytail. I started wearing it out naturally just for a few weeks ago. After a few experiments I've decided to continue growing it by installing two stand twists every couple of weeks, but it's at a nice length now. I'll bet that by wearing sew-ins for a a year you could at least double the length of your hair from five inches to 10 or 12. If that option is too pricey, perhaps cornrows with natural hair weaved in would also work. The only reason I suggest getting extensions is because it can be easier to get a style with almost zero manipulation. Hope this helps!

Oh and you are so right I have women come to me for their 6 weekly trim, but if your not using heat all the time and especially now ive seen a few tutorials on looking after African hair and yeah theres really no need to cut your hair all the time, even 3/4 times a year is fine! Because as a race you really do look after your hair, I used to be very naive, I thought u woke up in the morning with this perfect beautiful afro that you could just cornrow or whatever but yeah you all have such beautiful hair especially when its not hidden under a weave, now I'm not bashing the weave, don't bash the weave Charlie lol, but ur hair hunny looked a million times more beautiful than it would have had it been weaved stunning girl, absolutely stunning xx

I must say, one of the best videos in regards to what works for each hair. You are very correct in finding what works for your hair type. Most people, aren't aware but eating habits (nutrition) also play a factor in hair growth and how hair will react to certain hair products. Thank you for posting.

These are the best ideas for transitioning from chemically treated back to "natural" hairstyling. The key to good maintenance is: nutrition..water (spritzing)...leave on conditioner...oil..and a protective satin bonnet when sleeping. Everyone has different growth patterns and different curl patterns. You have to find what products work best for your type of hair and patience in this case is mandatory.

Do not use a harsh shampoo, deep condition, moisturize and seal with oil (focuse on the ends),use minimum heat, be gentle with your hair (use a wide tooth womb or fingers to detangle.Use protective styles. Protect your hair at night (satin scarf/pillow), if you're relaxed: relax your new growth only and try to stretch the time between your relaxers. Be consistent with your routine. Hope it helps, I have a channel and a blog with more tips if you're interested :-)

You could actually take advantage of that keep heat off your hair. You could still keep getting weave but when you take it out wash your hair moisturize it cut end if you need to. But you also need let your hair breathe. Also when washing hair massage your scalp. You also need patience weave is used in a lot of protective styles.

I'm going to college next year, and I really don't want to struggle because I've never really mastered doing my hair on my own, and I know that managing your natural hair on your own is much easier than trying to relax it all the time. I've had it with chemicals.

talk to your parents about ordering some hair products for your needs. do your research on what you think would be best for your hair. in the mean time, research on youtube some hairstyles you can do yourself so you will no longer have bad hair days! good luck lady

I suggest that you start with moisturizers (liquid moisturizers like Care Free Curl Instant Moisturizer and leave in conditioners - Cantu Shea Butter is AMAZING). These products will help soften your hair. You can then pull your hair into a soft bun and let it rest while you grow out your natural texture. Don't pull it too tight, or torture your edges. Also, alternate between high buns and low buns worn at your neck for variety. This will help you avoid breaking the front of your hair (that's the part that the bun will break) by wearing the same style too much. Try using scrunchies, rather than rubber bands or thin hair bands - even the ouchless kind. Your hair can wrap around the thin material and break. Good luck, honey! I was a foster kid myself, so I feel you.

I had stopped relaxing and as the natural grew, I kept doing protective hairstyles to not show the transition until the natural hair length was enough to cut the relaxed and end up with a TWA. August 2011 was my last relaxer, and my "big chop" was in January 2012. I had 5" of natural hair by that time.

What makes my hair grow are usually braids and weaves, on a everyday schedule i wake up rubbing avocado oil in my hair from the roots and edges or my scalp when I have a weave, then after 4 months or more passing by when I remove the braids or weave I see major growth and improvement in my hair. Then for a little while I keep my natural hair keeping that every day routine twisting my hair or putting in a bun really helps and makes my hair stronger. Plus she really gave out good advice

Wow, your hair looks really great. Please note that we will not all retain as much length. hair has 3 growing stages, if you don't cause damage to your hair, what ever length your hair was relaxed will be the length it will be natural. Hair on average grows about a half inch a month. so the average person will grow about 6 inches or so a year. All the advice she gives is great. A routine is more important than a product. 12 years natural and loving it.

If done correctly, by the right stylist, then weaves are excellent protective styling options. You need to make sure you are taking care of your hair while in the weave and also before and after the install.

When I have braids, I usually get box braids. I oil my scalp about 3-4 times a week with Castor oil, but feel free to choose whatever oil you prefer. Then I would oil my braids themselves,with coconut oil everyday. And be sure to drink lots of water and take your vitamins daily, even if it's just a multi-vitamin.

As your hair gets longer the curls get somewhat looser or more elongated. When my daughter was a baby her hair was very tightly curled. Now, ten years later, her hair has grown (almost to her butt) out and now has a looser curl. Her hair is heavier now, which weighs down the curls and makes them loosen up a bit.

There are black women with this type of hair texture. Pure black does not necessarily equal 4c (and I find 4c the loveliest hair texture). There are full black women who have looser textures. I am black and a 3c. I met a full blooded Mandinka woman from Gambia with the exact same hair texture and yes she is natural. Please don't put down looser textured hair as not being "authentic black" when the hair is still obviously Afro textured. It's almost like some black people think that all black people are supposed to look one certain type of way when Africa has more genetic diversity than any other continent with over 3000 different ethnicities. Peace

+MsFlamingFlamer how do you know what hair type you have
@MsFlamingFlamer
@MsFlamingFlamer 8 лет назад
+Shakira Harris I am actually not crazy about hair typing. It's just one system and its not perfect. Everyone is different. Knowing my hair's porosity and thickness was more important than my curl pattern. There are charts that can indicate roughly what curl pattern one has. Many people have a variety of curls on their head. Like my head has some 3b and 4a curls but is mostly 3c
@R.G.LovesBooks
@R.G.LovesBooks 8 лет назад
+MsFlamingFlamer I agree I have a niece and she would love to have a tighter curl pattern, she's fully black with very loose curls

+Garweest loas This is a BIG misconception that I feel the need to address since my hair is much like this woman's and I am NOT mixed; at least no more than most African Americans and others of African descent who might have a white ancestor or two in their lineage somewhere. First, the woman says in the comments under the video that she is wearing an old braid out. Braid outs, twist outs, bantu knot outs and other styles can greatly STRETCH your hair and curl pattern. Many of us have great hair elasticity which means it can be stretched, trained, or MANIPULATED; for some of us this is easier than for others. I naturally have mostly 3c hair with some 4a (the woman in the video says she has 4a) and I wear my hair pulled back in a puff ponytail most of the time; not because I want to stretch my hair but because I like the style but guess what? This style and others like it stretch my hair out and therefore stretch my curls and waves. People of African descent all over the world have been stretching their hair for centuries with styles, banding, threading etc. It's not that difficult and it's of course easier if you have a looser texture to begin with but you DO NOT have to be mixed to do this. Some people choose to do this with heat by blow drying and flat ironing their hair and leaving it straight a lot. This will do the same thing; straighten or stretch the hair but many who use heat end up with heat damage if they use heat too much and that basically causes straight pieces that won't get curly again even when they wear their hair curly. Many natural hair women use stretching without heat to keep their hair growing long since the less curl and kink we have, the less chance for breakage. Anyway, just wanted to shed some light on this because I see lots of comments about people being mixed who have looser textures and this is not necessarily the case.

deep condition every two weeks. wear curly styles. try to get her to allow you to stretch your relaxers longer. if you get them every 6 weeks, try to stretch it for 8 weeks or even 10. moisture is key whether you are natural or relaxed.

I currently have a weave right now. Only thing with my hair, is that it grows so freaking fast! I don't have the typical 1/2" a month growth, my hair grows literally a full inch. I'm Trinidadian/Jamaican. My mom moved me to the states, and at 16 started relaxing my hair, changing the texture. 2011, I tried going natural, and got really frustrated so I relaxed it. Finally, I decided last year in February to try again. This time, I had better knowledge and I use the Shea Moisture line, currently.

BRAID IT, TWIST IT, you can still do the things you do with relaxed hair and all. Just use less heat if you want to grow it out and to be healthy. My hair is natural, and I limit my flat ironing to max 3 times a week. Sometimes I never flatiron it in a week and I will just comb it moisturize and go or I will put a braid and a pony tail in. TIP: Go to a GiGi's hair supply and look around or an African American oriented store to help you with your natural hair needs.

For everyone who said do NOT use water on "our hair"....I can tell you it DOES work. When I began a journey to natural (I've been natural and relaxed several times in my life) I was afraid of the draw up if water got close to my 'natural' hair :D In recent years, I read that water actually strengthens the hair. So, I decided to try it. When I showered, I allowed some of the spray to be on my hair. I didn't soak it through, just let the steam in the air do what steam does. And I went from a short chop to below shoulders in a year. I wore protective braids MOST of that year (which wore me out because I put them in and maintained them myself.) HOWEVER, I noticed that when I took the braids out, I had less breakage/lost hair than I'd had at any other time. The only product I used consistently during that time other than water was one by a friend who specializes in products for women who are natural in hair and body care. ALL of her hair products I used were water based and contained essential oils. As many have said, you have to do what works for your hair. MY hair loves the water mist/oil. And some of it loves water mist and shea butter. I was sitting here tonight, thinking about doing another big chop because I have gotten so busy doing other stuff and NOT taking care of my hair that it looks a FRIGHT. But when I untwisted it and realized that, even damaged, it is still below shoulder length in the back and at least 1" below my chin on the sides, bangs reach my bottom lip, MAYBE I want to go into rescue mode instead of chop mode. (7-9") So "Hair-a-Do" and "Divine" hair moisturizing mists, here I come. Oh, and my hair type? ALL but the tightest, wiry curls. All of my ancestors left a strand of THEIR hair on my head--even the 2A Africans. (Why do we think every black African has/had tightly curled hair?--Didn't and don't!!) So My 2A-C, 3A-C and at least 4B--all baby-soft-fine head of hair is interesting to do stuff with that looks beautiful. A lot of times I feel like just going back to the Afro of the late 60s/70s--but that 2 A-C always messed up my Angela Davis! LOL (Since hair grows from the INSIDE out, I did take Biotin 1000mcg, MegaStress B vitamins, Folic acid, and MSM (sulfur). If you are not eating healthfully, it is usually hard to grow healthy hair...my experience, anyway. (the nutrients help with the growth cycle) Satin caps and pillow cases, big-toothed combs and fingers are friends to have)

I would advise seamless wide tooth combs. You can take the best care of your hair, but if you use combs with seams, you are shredding the stands of your hair, causing thinning, and eventually breakage as the comb runs through it. Look at your combs to check for seams on the teeth and between. Our hair curls and kinks, so that means those combs will run through definite patterns before exiting. Don't be the victim of unnecessary hair breakage. I Love my Sistas !

About this texture thing, when I twist my hair it looks kinkier than when I braid it. When I roll my hair it looks like I straightened it. Our hair is very versatile. It looks like it has different textures depending on the style and the length. I wish I still had those curls you see in my pic but my hair hangs looser now that its longer.
